And 0000 is Y position. :P 0001 is not really reliable though. What I work with instead is 0B01, which is position relative to camera. Another fun fact - if 0B01 reaches 224 or more, the character's (let's just call him Zook from now on, as this game originally is Zook Hero 2) position overflows and warps him to the left side of the screen. Therefore, for long horizontal rooms, I aim to get 0B01 to 223 while otherwise losing as little time as possible. This leaves Zook as far as possible to the right of the next room (which is about near the center of the screen) when it's scrolled to.

Bump! Ever since working on the April Fools submission I've been wanting to work on a full run. It was held off for a long time because I wanted to finish other projects first, and I got demotivated because movement optimization even for just the first room of the first stage was a little...daunting. Just watch the WIP below to see why. Let's just say the fastest way of movement is a bit unusual. It does come with some fun glitches, though, including skipping minibosses and skipping whole screens. Anyway, I got the first stage done (out of 12 total; 8 stages with 4 revisits). I'm not completely sure if I'll continue with this, but this should be enough fun for now. (Note that this run uses a different ROM from the one in the April Fools submission; this run uses a dump without the save glitch, but it has glitched collision detection during bossfights). Okay, I finished the improvement: User movie #11498141338888904 Saved 929 frames overall. Turned out I had to redo a lot more than I thought - the game is occasionally not very hex-friendly. I did find a few other small timesavers, though.

I could've possibly discovered the stage 6 skip trick any time after the run being accepted/published. I just happened to stumble upon it after acceptance, but before publication.

There isn't any reason this game wouldn't be accepted for Vault - it isn't unlicensed or homebrew, so it qualifies as a legit game, even for all the faults and ripoffs it's made out of. Given its quality, though, Moons would be unlikely, but that depends on how the TAS turns out to be.

I recently found out about a few possible improvements for the TAS. One is a small movement trick to speed up some jumping movements in a few stages, and another is a trick that allows skipping about half of stage 6 (saving about 9-10 seconds). I could fix them in, redo some stages, and hex the rest together. feos, could you delay publication while I work on the improvements?

Emerald has a lot of expanded content compared to Ruby and Sapphire. This testrun is over 1.5 times as long as the published Ruby run, which is a much larger difference than I expected. I'd say a full Emerald run would be acceptable on the site.

I think the decision was made then (when that one was found out to be inappropriately published in the vault) that such movies would go to moon tier regardless of rating.

Its entertainment rating is 6.1 (as of writing). The cutoff rate for Vault is an entertainment rating of 5.7 or less, which is why it was moved to Moons during the initial divide. With its rating (even if not very impressive), there's no reason for it to have to go to Vault.

They can't be manipulated. Their position and movement pattern are fixed when they appear on screen.

Nice run! I have a question though. In the stage where you're carrying rocks around (stage 10), why do you seemingly go out of your way at 8:40 in the encode to get another rock from the right in order to progress instead of just using the rock you're already holding?
It's necessary to collect that bag on the platform in order to have enough bags to pass all the jumps. Note that I pick up that bag I placed there again at 9:10 in the encode.

Just saw the whole run on emulator in one go (having already seen most of the WIPs). This run kept me interested the whole time (aside from some of the practice missions, because they're often quite redundant with the time attack equivalents). Many entertaining moments. Nice work, clear yes vote. Sync note (for encoders): the run uses bios scph1000. It won't sync with scph1001.

It looks like this run is quite suboptimal in many areas (prior to the arbitrary execution part). Werster's commentary does a pretty good job at pointing this out. There's just all kinds of sloppy mistakes, bad overworld movement, bad battles, bad luck manipulation (Totodile having bad stats and missing KOs because of this is a very bad one), and other decisions that don't seem sensible or necessary (getting Potions/Super Potions at bad or weird places when there are faster ones available to get, going out of the way to get a Parlyz Heal instead of buying it at the shop, etc.). I'm also not convinced the arbitrary execution method is the optimal to do it either. According to the submission text, you write a memory writer in arbitrary code, in order to write a more advanced memory writer, just to write 4 values in memory? Is it impossible to just assemble instructions to modify those values directly? That'd seem like it could be significantly faster. Of course, I don't know if that's possible. EDIT: Never mind, I see this is explained in the submission comments now.

PSXjin is better than PCSX-rr, although that doesn't say much. As far as sync stability is concerned, I haven't personally found much issues with the TAS plugins of PCSX, but if that fails, chances are PSXjin might be better in this regard. However, I don't think PSXjin is infallible either. So yeah, I recommend you go with PSXjin.

Even for any%, generally you'll want to pick medium difficulty. Only pick easy if the difference with medium is just numbers like enemy hit point counts and would only pad the run. Note these rules/guidelines on the matter:
Wiki: Vault wrote:
Technical requirements <snip>
  • The guidelines for difficulty settings, and password use still apply.
Wiki: Guidelines wrote:
Select your goals well <snip>
  • Where a game has multiple difficulty levels, it is preferred to play on the hardest difficulty level (for more interesting gameplay) unless the only difference between difficulty levels is enemy/boss hit points, in which case the easiest difficulty levels are preferred in the interest of speed. If the difference in difficulty is inapplicable for your run, for example, you trigger the end game sequence right from the start, then selecting the hardest mode is unnecessary.

The most hassle-free option is to just go with medium difficulty in this case. Most runs of newer Castlevanias and Mega Man games (with an unlockable hard mode) do this.

I don't think more than 3 answer options are needed. I've suggested changing it to something simple like Yes/No/Vault instead of Yes/No/Meh. Warp's idea is fairly similar, if more verbose. As a side note, having more than 3 answer options will very definitely run into site code issues.
