For those hungry for more SotN action, Desquall made a semi-optimized TAS of the recently found to be possible 'low% mist' category (beat the game with only one relic, in this case mist. The fastest low% is still wolf but wolf, bat, mist, faerie card (?) and leap stone (??) are all possible) Link to video And here's a bunch of random SotN tech that's been discovered recently: Link to video Proof of concept for low% leap stone. Requires frame perfect menus so isn't very RTA viable unless you hate yourself. Link to video Shaft Skip for PS1 (english) and XBLA - allows pacifist and 0 bosses to skip Shaft as well, so it's now a mandatory skip in those categories. BTW, if you do this skip in the room where you get holy glasses - on XBLA it hard locks your Xbox 360, on I think PSP it loads the dracula fight but dracula doesn't appear (or something like that) Link to video A new way to do Richter Skip. Basically what makes the Richter fight work properly (and what made the ancient power of wolf Richter Skip) is if the camera is locked, and the camera locking is caused by a specific box surrounding the room, and if you transform on the right frame your hitbox moves position such that on frame X you're before the box and on frame X+1 you're entirely past the box. Link to video Infinite height with faerie card. This is what would make low% faerie card possible: 1) Under unknown circumstances, you can perform save corruption with the faerie card speech, similar to how the sword card save corruption in the 'all relics, best ending' TAS works. 2) This save corruption can give you 1 hp max. 3) Get a toadstool, a duplicator and farm life apples (I forget if duplicator works on them or not) (if not, this is the unfun part). 4) Do this video. Check out http://www.youtube.com/user/ForgoneMoose/videos and http://www.youtube.com/user/ZX497/videos for a lot of misc stuff as well.

That's true for a balls to the walls optimized 100% TAS, but for just doing a casual 100% tool assisted completion it sounds like a lot of fun to just put a little effort into annihilating the game.

Notepad++, the best Notepad replacement. Has regex find+replace, find in files+repace, syntax highlighting for many languages, lots of line operations, EOL conversion operations, tons and tons of goodies if you look under the right click, Edit, Search, TextFX (if it doesn't come with TextFX plugin, recommend you install it!) and View menus. I recommend you look through all the menus and familiarize yourself with what time savers it can do even if you use the program a lot, I guarantee you're overlooking something cool you can do with it. For example, you can do a search, have notepad++ mark all lines that match the search, invert marking (mark -> unmarked, unmarked -> marked) then do something with all marked lines (delete for example). SpeedCrunch is a calculator and can be an alternative to PowerCalc. It has variables and a bunch of useful functions, many that powercalc is missing (including but not limited to: factorial, mod, and, or, xor, not, oct, bin, hex, all hyperbolic and trigonometric functions and inverses, gamma, erf, lots of probability functions, min, max, average, abs, arithmetic shifts...). The main feature missing from it that I liked about PowerCalc is user-definable functions, but if you're going to build a big, crazy function or program, you may as well cut out the middle man and open a Python or LUA interactive prompt at that point :)

I think that the map distort route used in the real time record is not possible on silver or on crystal. Not sure about coin case routes.

I'd like to raise another point just for clarity: - Using dirty save file in order to skip cutscenes. Example: Metroid Prime Would this be considered a 'newgame+'? I know that [1759] GBA Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow "all souls, inbounds" by Kriole in 24:56.10 starts from SRAM in order to access hard mode, but also benefits from the skipable cutscenes.
This is used in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night too. I'm not aware of anyone who isn't OK with it nowadays, but it should be considered as part of any overarching rulings, yes :)

It's a similar case to Ocarina of Time TASes, where the TAS method of timing make it seem slow compared to real time runs, but if you actually compare the parts in both runs it's way faster.

As a counterpoint to the above: does anyone know if the various speedrunning communities would accept a run that performed such tricks? In other words, have they had this argument yet? :)
I know it exists AS an issue: -Feasel, a runner of FF1, knows that about half of NESes have a 'typical' pattern for uninitialized memory whereas the other half are more 'random' and have other patterns for uninitialized memory. This is particularly important as it determines what battles you get. On top of that, if you don't wait with the NES off between runs, sometimes you will get an unexpected pattern because the RAM hasn't fully settled down yet. -PJ, a runner of SGnG, knows that the stage 3 boss (the curled up looking thing)'s spawn location is different for every single card of SGnG. IIRC he has a cart where the position is not optimal. I haven't heard of people putting on game A then game B to manipulate uninitialized RAM or anything like that, though.

Post subject: General ruling for 'glitches existing save data'/'NG+' runs?

This seems to bring up a lot of debate in individual game topics whenever someone wants to do a run with 'NG+' mechanics - using pre-existing save data to start a new game, but some data erroneously mixed in from the save, allowing for a faster run that is still 'new game'. I think a general ruling should be made for how such runs should be treated - are they technically any%? A new category? Should not be accepted? To facilitate this I'm going to post as many examples of 'NG+' mechanics as I'm aware of in speedruns. Feel free to post ones you know of too. Donkey Kong 64 - The 'Funky Weapons Glitch' requires a cart where you've EVER beaten the game on - even if you erase all save files, it still works. It lets you start a new game with the abilities of a multiplayer match already unlocked - weapons and sniper scope, notably. There is also a way to partially glitch completion from a save file onto a new game run, which is only allowed in 106% glitched/max% glitched categories and not in any%. https://kb.speeddemosarchive.com/Donkey_Kong_64#Funky_Weapons_Glitch Ocarina of Time 3D: The category called 'NG+' allows you to start a new game with any item glitched onto B - popular choices are farore's wind for any% and megaton hammer for MST. This is done by using the bottle adventure glitch on a save file to get the item you want on B on B first. http://zeldaspeedruns.com/oot3d/ng/creating-a-ng-file Crash Bandicoot 2: A glitch discovered today allows you to start a new game in warp zone 4, the category has been called NG+ (NG+ any% or NG+ 100%). Castlevania: Symphony of the Night: It is possible to transfer the level of the sword 'Muramasa' from a save file to a new game run. I don't know of the specifics, just that ForgoneMoose & arukado plan on using it for the new any% TAS and it has apparently been OK'd for use. Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest: The 'resistance bug' lets you start a new game where character 2 keeps some traits of the equipment of character 2 from a previous save file. It is used in RTA categories. Diddy Kong Racing: It is possible to transfer the fact that Future Fun Land (the last area of the game) is open from a separate save file then, from a new game, use OoB glitches to immediately go there and beat the final boss. A TAS of this category was rejected: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13743 http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=338326#338326 Densetsu no Stafy: It is possible to transfer the state of a save file over to a new game, putting you at the final boss on a new game and allowing you to immediately win. A TAS of this category was rejected: http://tasvideos.org/3832S.html The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword: The glitch 'Back in Time' makes it so the intro screen is playable. In this state you can also access the menus to load and save, while saving using in-game save points (because you have made the intro screen playable), allowing you to corrupt two save files together. Using this and a pre-made save file you could easily go from the first BiT to the end of the game, but all speedruns disallow using a save file made before the run has started in BiT. Super Metroid: The post by ais523 explains this one better than I could: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=338326#338326

If you're starting off a file with substantial progress, it's a new game +, and that's not a category that TASvideos normally accepts.
I thought the new SotN any% run was going to do muramasa transfer from an already made save file and it was OK'd.

If you mean you already knew it in mupen and need to find it again in bizhawk, in both emulators search for a very simple to find memory address, then the offset between the two memory addresses will be the same in both emulators, therefore you can deduce the memory address of actual speed.

Going good with any% TAS? Also will there be a new MST TAS in not to far future since there are so many new tricks and techniques? And is a 100% TAS still considered a unrealistic project to complete?
I think OoT TASers are not interested in doing long category TASes until a TASable emulator is out for N64 that is desync-proof and comfortable to use. Bizhawk / N64 is not quite there yet. An MST, All Dungeons or 100% TAS would be hype as fuck. But also a ridiculous effort. So it's worth waiting until that effort can be spent as efficiently as possible.

IMO an obsoletion to this run would have to have better in game times anyway (= proof of higher quality), that way it could move from the format it has now (unlock sonic than unlock tails) to the format of having tails unlocked already on a memory card and still be fairly compared/shown to be better. So I wouldn't worry about it. (You said yourself that if you do tails story from a memory card it's slower)
