No, no. Sometimes, in some games, pausing helps to trigger certain things in RNG that not pausing can't do.

Well the reason I suggested this was because there seem to be a lot of games out there which use the game's respective pause feature to save time, usually for RNG manipulating purposes.

I brought this up in IRC a few months back, and I thought it would be interesting if we had a category like this: "Uses the pause function" Or someone else suggested "Uses pause buffering" Do you think that's a good idea?

Please keep up the work on this! I really need a PS2 emulator for a game I'm very enthusiastic about.

Good luck, gfd. Oh and you mentioned this being a "TAS that nobody's ever asked for". If you're interested in games of that sort, you're not the only one. Most of the games I've TASed are ones that no one has even considered glitchhunting for.

So, I found this game yesterday when looking for random popular franchises and searching GBA games for them. I'm actually looking for some help with this title. It's a really hard game and I'm kindasorta stuck on World 2, Level 3. I want to TAS this game since it seems interesting. The first step to TASing any game is messing around with it and beating it in normal play a few times to get to know the goal. It's a maze platformer with huge maps. You basically have to search through the 10s of doors in every level to find 8 keys, and unlock the last door with them. You can't jump on your own in this game, which is why it's interesting but freaking annoying! There are ladders you climb, elevators you go up, clouds you bounce from. Basically, the game is like a huge maze that we have to route out. That doesn't seem so bad on its own, but then you have to factor in all the enemies, plunger guns, helmets, and other stuff. Right now I'm on step 1: beat the game, and am struggling with even that at this point. Anybody want to help with the entire process? I'd really like to see the finished result of this annoying but interesting game. Thanks.

Yeah.... that horrible piece of crap. Here's some resources: http://tasvideos.org/5332S.html My complete 100% TAS Also, this playlist on YouTube of my videos involving this game: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLoZMw6e_YIFFzUw1Dad3vOuKsR5chyipT I found another fun trick where you can actually get an unlimited amount of points in Stay in the Spotlight by holding the stylus on one of those text-boxes in the tutorial, but haven't uploaded that yet. There are a few other things I'm interested in in this game, mostly point-related. It is notable for me to say that there is also an any% category for this game. For any% it would be faster to use Jade as your character, since Tori is 6 frames slower during the character choosing in the menu. Also, you don't have to buy anything in any%, so I would just be doing Easy mode the entire time. For any% all you have to do is start the first level, and go in order all the way to the 18th (last) level, and stop at the frame "Credits" is clicked when that level is completed. The problem with any%, though, is that it would be very difficult to route. Just going through the levels may seem simple to you, but any% is actually a lot more complicated even than 100%. With 100%, you just get every move right in every level. But with any%, there is no coin amount required. Pop the Stars sometimes ends levels faster, as I've observed in certain portions of the game, but Pop the Stars sometimes makes levels longer as well. Pop the Stars is initiated only after 5 rows of perfect moves are completed, and they keep happening every row after that that you get perfect. Along with that, to complete levels, there's a minimum amount of moves you absolutely have to get right in order not to get "Too Bad" and have to do the level over again. So, what I'm basically saying is that for any% I'd have to do a ton of testing with every level to see which moves I can miss (most of them by the way) and which I can't miss to save the most time, and where Pop the Stars will and won't save time. Oh, and a certain amount of points unlocks a certain number of items per level, which wastes a frame per unlockable, so I'd have to factor that into the routing too. Talking about entertainment, if you thought 100% was boring, any% would be an absolute snoozefest for the viewers and a hellhole for the TASer. It would barely look superhuman at all because so many moves would be missed on purpose to save time. In "Stage Combat" we would just die right after the tutorial. Now, I can still have fun with "Stay in the Spotlight", which is the only even remotely good part of the any% run, and it would be nearly the same as 100%. "Northridge Girls" has a time LOSS from missing moves so it would be the same as in 100%. I'm guessing an any% run would be 10 minutes faster than 100% at most. You're subtracting most of Pop the Stars wastes in 100%, doing the first level 1 time instead of 4, having to go back to the main menu so many times, and exiting the unlockable notifications (barely any time at all). Another thing that needs to be done with this game is that I need to make a webpage somewhere containing all the text in the game (like I did for Transformers and plan to do for all games I focus on). Somebody also needs to rip the music from the game and upload it. Though it's not a good game, this sort of thing must be done for every game. Theoretically, somebody's gonna have to do an any% run of every game in existence eventually, so since no one else will even want to touch Victorious, the guy who does that run might as well be me. *sigh* But I'm taking a very, very, very long break from that game nonetheless and may never have the motivation to do any%.

I meant that whole "when technology becomes superintelligent and makes everything perfect" thing. Updates itself faster than we can handle, has its own superconsciousness, etc. etc.

Does anyone here believe that the technological singularity is going to happen in the near future (by 2045), or at all? And to what extent? What are the reasons to believe or to not believe that the singularity will happen? Also, for those who believe in the singularity, what will happen to the TAS community when the singularity occurs? Such intelligent AI would do perfect speedruns of every game in existence, I would assume, as well as doing a tremendous amount of other unrelated tasks. So...then what? I actually have no idea what to believe as far as that goes, but am interested to hear your opinions.

I didn't watched the run yet. I'll vote after doing it. By the way, I want to make you note that in this run the game is played with the easiest difficulty set, instead of using the hardest as adviced by the guidelines. Using the hardest difficulty would probably have resulted in a more entertaining and interesting run, even if this would make lose some seconds in the overall time.
Please also note that the very last level uses Extreme mode, which is the hardest difficulty out of 4. So what he said about the modes isn't entirely true, but mostly true. Yes, I used the default Easy set throughout most of the run, because it doesn't waste any seconds if I just leave it at the default, as explained in the Submission text.

I had already considered the idea of a site that "completely dissects video games" but this idea seems like too big of a project to tackle without enough interest. Also, my previous idea would make the ideal (finished) pages ridiculously large. http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=18277 Read this for more information on that. That's where this new idea comes from. So, I was thinking about making a game resources site. This will include all (at least console) games. The idea comes mainly from speedrun.com's layout, where they'll have "leaderboards" for every game. Well I wanted something like that with my site, except a lot more broad, and I do mean a LOT more broad. So, this site wouldn't just cover a specific gaming task, such as speedrunning or TASing, but would include everything. Each leaderboard would have sections linking to TAS runs, speedruns, walkthroughs, let's plays, lists of glitch videos, ripped stuff (including game music [links to YouTube videos, etc], sprites, 3-D models, etc.), and especially download links for this ripped stuff, links to level editors for that game (if applicable, and really ideally there SHOULD be a level editor for every game in existence, IMO), lists of ROM hacks of the game, cheat code resources, links to reviews, lists of other miscellaneous records (highest score, etc., if applicable), links to places you can buy that game (Amazon links, etc.), links to sites that show reverse-engineered code of that game, and other sites or links that are useful in the context of that game (for instance, with the Super Mario 64 leaderboard, it might link to sm64.org). I'm debating as to whether I should link to ROM/ISO download sites, since I'm not sure about the legality of simply LINKING to such things, but I'm sure it depends on the area. Now, there's one issue, that's an issue with a lot of sites. Where does the motivation come from to put all this information in the site for all these games, and to organize it all? It'd take a lot of people just to do this much! And it's a new idea, and we have some competition with other sites. Well I've considered a system where we actually pay users (that's right, with money!!!) to add content. Each task that they can do on the site will literally be called a "task". Certain tasks get a certain amount of money. For instance, the addition of a speedrun for a game will get you a certain amount of money (probably not very much at all if you're just adding a link, maybe a couple of cents). However, people will realize that this adds up, and therefore, hundreds of links will be added. If a user submits a speedrun that they do themselves, however, you'll make more money than if you just add a link to one. If a user submits a run that they did themselves that is WR, they will get more money than if they submit a run that was theirs that did not make WR. If a user submits a TAS that they complete themselves, they will receive more money than if they submit a speedrun that they did themselves(?)(because don't TASes take a lot more work than regular speedruns?) and obviously if they submit a WR TAS over a non-WR TAS, then there's more money in that. Walkthroughs and lets-plays would probably be one of the tasks that makes the least amount of money, since there are plenty of those out there and very few games that actually don't have full walkthroughs. Reviews would be around that same range. Generally, though, on the site, if you make something yourself and link to it on the site, you get more money than if you don't make something yourself and link to it. There are a lot of common internet things that would get people a very, very small amount of money, among those things speedrun linking and glitch demonstration linking would probably be the most profitable. ROM site linking (if we even do that) wouldn't make any money at all, since I think that's illegal to pay someone for posting ROMs. Well, so what about reverse engineering? Since it's not done often enough, I feel that I should put a LOT more money into people who link to reverse-engineered code. Also, with level editors. There just aren't enough of those out there, and there are plenty of unpopular games to which I sure wish I had a level editor to play around with. So, level editor linking would give a shit ton more money than other links. And if someone actually engineers a level editor, I mean we're talking about thousands of dollars I would give to someone who did that, for any game. Same with completely reverse-engineered code, I would give thousands for it per game! So, economically, the motivation would come not only from people feeling that they're doing a good cause by helping out a database, but also being paid for helping out, depending on which tasks they do. Some problems... Now, there are a few issues I have with this idea that I'd like to point out, or some things that I'm unsure of. First off, where will I get the money to pay these contributors? Second, we need trustworthy people to verify each of these contributions to make (at least mostly, because it can never be perfect) sure they're accurate. For some games, that wouldn't be too hard to find, but for others, we'd have to have people who are more knowledgable about games in general of a certain category. So where would those moderators come from? Would we pay them too? How would that work? I mean, I already think I'm going to put ads on the site, just because that's the most common way to pay for casual sites. I don't want to put too many ads though. I don't want them popping up everywhere. Just like an ad on the top of the screen, the bottom, and maybe one on the side. I don't want to go crazy with it, or that will scare people away from the site. I would also have a place on the site where people can donate money to the site. Another issue. (I know this sounds crazy, but...) some people won't necessarily want money by doing this, but something else. Now, I'm not about to run a bunch of YouTube subscription bots that give people a thousand more subscribers or whatever (seriously, I've actually seen this happen), but maybe there's something else I can give people. For instance, perhaps we could have a credits system as well (many businesses and sites do), and if they get a certain amount of credits, they can unlock certain things. Like maybe if a user contributes enough they could be automatically posted for a moderator request (so they could possibly become a moderator if approved). Or maybe there's something else we can offer with the credits. Like I dunno, what ELSE could we offer people besides money? Also, what format would we use? I'm completely lost as to what application I'm going to use for the site, or how it will be programmed, etc. I have no idea where to start with all that. I mean I could just put up a wiki site, but then where will that go? We can't pay people for contributing to just average wikis. That would completely destroy the entire point of it being a wiki. Oh, and I need a site name. But I'm terrible with coming up with names. Now what would that name be...? Any ideas? So, these are a bunch of ideas I have for this site. I have somewhat high hopes for it if I can actually fund for the site and gather a decent amount of participants. I really am looking for some advice, or even better but not really what I'm asking for particularly, someone who's interested in helping. I feel that I have a really good idea, but I honestly have close no knowledge on how to really implement this idea and be successful with it. Thanks. PS: The reason I posted this here on TASVideos is because 1.) There are many people knowledgable about this stuff here and 2.) TASVideos will be a site that is linked to a lot from my site.

I like what I see. I've never heard of DataCrystal before, but I have heard of tcrf. These sites seem to be focused on the hacking status of the games. Ultimately, I feel having the ability to make a hack for a game is a really good thing. But the thing I was thinking of was more of a central database for everything about a specific game, and not just what would interest one community or category of play. For instance, these could be some sections (this is not for a specific game; just more of a general thing to show you what a page might look like, and they'd be very long):
Video game database site wrote:
*paragraph description of what the game is and other important aspects. A general introduction* ==Plot== *describes the plot, though this has absolutely nothing to do with the game's programming itself* ===Sequence breaking=== ===Plot flaws=== ==Game physics== ===Jumping=== ===Damage hits=== *this is about the physics of inflicting damage, like a slight upward boost or something* ===Speed=== *talks about speed values of you and the enemies* ===Enemy movements=== ==Game logic== ===Life count=== ===Ammunition count=== ===Damage values=== ===RNG=== *talks about the RNG* ====Manipulation==== *talks about how it can be manipulated* ==Hacking status== *lists off useful hacking stuff, like a level editor and some well-known ROM hacks. In cases like Super Mario Bros. for the NES, this list could be massive. If it doesn't have a level importer, there'd be a template encouraging someone to make one (which is really good because we really need more level importers in this world).* ===Reverse engineering status=== *if someone has published reverse engineered code of the game, we'd link to that here. Otherwise there'd be a template encouraging someone to do it.* ==Emulation== *describes important points about emulating the game, especially suggested emulators, and which emulators will freeze it, etc.* ===Emulation vs. console=== *lists off differences between gameplay on a console and gameplay on an emulator (not the obvious stuff, more like which specific lags don't happen at what parts of the game on one platform and what does on the other)* ==Useful RAM addresses== ==ROMs/ISOs== *links off to ROM sites for downloads. Should we include this or not?* ==Versions== *lists off versions of the game and their specific differences* ==Music== *lists off YouTube dumps of the game's OST if they exist, and if they don't exist, then this section would have a template that encourages someone to make some* ==Objects== *here's a long list of known, set-in-stone objects, such as enemies, blocks, items, etc., that gives a long description of each, and gives extracted sprites of all their animations if applicable, or a link to their 3-D objects* ==Maps== *links to either extracted or drawn maps/designs of levels of the game* ==Speedruns== *lists off RTA records of the game* ==TASes== *lists off TAS records of the game* ==Walkthroughs and LPs== *links to known walkthroughs and LPs of the game* ==Reception== *from external sources, lists how the game was reviewed by whatever game reviewing sites do that. Also links to YouTube review videos* ==External links== *lists Wikipedia article, the game's category on YouTube Gaming, Twitch, and whatever else* [[Category:GBA games]] (for example)
This is just a brief example I threw together in 30 minutes, and there are likely a lot more sections I could make, especially depending on the game. But I feel this would be good for many reasons; the complete dissection of a game and documentation of it feels like an art project. There'd probably be a select few active users. Also, the templates would encourage people to actually do things with the game, like make a level importer, or make TAS-capable emulators, or dump a ROM of the game (should we include that section?), or dump music from the game and upload it to YouTube so people can easily listen to it or use it for some video editing project (of some kind). There may not be a *whole lot* of interest in people editing a site like this, but it'd be like a playground for a few of us here I imagine.

I understand this is a bit off-topic, but I put it in the Sites forum because it has to do with, well, sites that are about aspects of video games that most people here are interested in. Mods, feel free to move this if you feel it's appropriate to do so. See, I'm not saying I'm very knowledgable with coding and RAM to be honest, but when I play a game, I often just like to screw around so much that I know everything I can possibly know about its physics, logic, and object interactions. I'm sure that a great amount of people reading this are the same way. I always feel like I want to document it somewhere, but when I put stuff like that on my user namespace on Wiktionary the admins nag me that it isn't appropriate for the site and takes up (an *extremely* small amount that almost amounts to nothing of) the WMF's bandwidth. I say that like I'm being mean, but I'm not trying to be, just stating facts. (Note that I wasn't making *entries* like that, I was putting them on my user namespace, meaning parts of my user page) Anywaym I want to publish it all somewhere, you know. But how? I feel like there should be a wiki website that stores game logic and physics documentation. The site would be divided by game, and it would tell all about how the game at hand works (as far as we know anyway) from start to finish. It would allow links to YouTube videos, or whatever other video websites, you know Dailymotion and whatnot, in order to demonstrate certain glitches or other game logic aspects. I know what you're thinking. "Well, TASVideos' documentation already does this, like, say, in GameResources.html." But the site itself isn't specifically for this, it is for TAS movie submission, ultimately, and the game resources and submission commentary are just meant to help people in the interest of beating the game as fast as possible using tools. Plus, there are consoles that aren't even near the possibility of TASing right now, such as XBox 360 and the Wii U. In other words, I'd like a site that not only explains the aspects of the game that make it easier to beat it faster (or with more entertainment value), but also just...well...*everything* about the game that is known to humans playing them. See, the question is, how would we organize all this information? I know that it would be separated by game, obviously, since each game is its own universe (as I like to say), and the universes don't generally intertwine. I also have the feeling that anyone should be able to edit it, like Wikipedia, without any qualification or rank standards for users (other than registration, probably). There are just so many aspects of a game, and I have several that I just want to spew out all the information about the entire game on a single document. Some examples of games I want to dissect are Santa Claus Saves the Earth, That's So Raven, both of the Foster's games, LEGO Friends for the DS, Transformers for the PS2, Adventures in the Magic Kingdom, and a few others. And I've tried doing this before for Transformers, but lost motivation because of the fact that I had no idea how I was supposed to organize this information. For instance, a blaster shot can affect an enemy, but then I'd have to jump straight into talking about how it affects the enemy, but wait a minute, I wanted to put the enemy reactions to stuff in its own separate section as well. (Ugh) That's the kind of stuff I struggle with when doing this. Any ideas? If enough users here agree that there should be a site like this, and we find out a good enough system for how the info will all be organized, I'm willing to chip in some money for its creation and bandwidth and such.

I just RTA'd the game. I got 46:08 just a few minutes ago. Of course I can't record because it's on a handheld. The point is I'll be doing this over and over every other day until my computer gets fixed. That's right: all 15 areas, including the boss, without getting game over once (I died twice out of three possible times lol). Did not use passwords. Did it in one sitting. Yeah but really this game is hard as fuck. It took me forever to master it (3 whole days!). Area 11 is stupid because a casual player LITERALLY has no control over the lasers while going on the side elevator. The only thing you can do is manipulate the camera and the lasers' loading times. Area 14 is so shitty. It's just insanely hard. Also I think Nilam's health depends on how many times you get hurt by her. I hit her 4 times once, and had to hit her 6 times on this run. I believe 3 hits is the minimum; that is, if you don't get hurt by her at all. Most of everything else is pretty easy. There are some shit parts though, such as one part in Area 9. But yeah I'm unfortunately starting to say I like this game now that Lars and I can seriously destroy it like I am now.

BTW I literally have a copy of the game now that I bought. Works and everything. Obviously I got it online for really cheap. I've routed the entire game up to the end of Area 7. I'm halfway through. Then I'll be RTAing this game every other night. My Windows laptop is currently broken so yeah, gonna be pretty hard to TAS, but by the time it's fixed I'll be more than ready, I'll have already known the game from top to bottom.

There are already things like Android emulators already, but I've never heard any discussion of TASing game apps for them. I wonder why. Of course, I'm not a game developer, but (a lot) of these games seem like the programming was complex but the concept was very simplistic. So it sort of surprises me. What is the status of it right now? I wanted specifically to make a topic about the new and trending Pokémon Go, which is being played all over my town. But I wanted to discuss it sort of as a joke, since what would be the overall goal of TASing or speedrunning it anyway... I decided to just go ahead and make a topic about the entire platforms, since they don't seem to have much discussion here, so why not? Since the game is GPS-based, I wonder if you could somehow glitch or corrupt the maps. Or make it so that you kept "losing your Internet/data connection" and spawning to a much farther place on the map, you know, so that your character runs to that location. Idk, a run of this would probably be repetitive and boring, if it were even possible, but would be fun at first at least, to see the GPS and such keep being completely taken advantage of. I don't really play many games for this, so I'm unfamiliar with Angry Birds and other popular ones, but I imagine TASes of those would also attract a lot of attention.

Is it just me, or do a lot of SNES-era games have prehistoric/dinosaur age settings and plot elements? I mean Joe & Mac and its sequel were published here not long ago at all, and then DinoCity. This is interesting.

I really recommend that you make a TAS of the game using the existing emulator, the other option is to wait for a developer to update the emulator, which can take years.
It sort of makes sense. Perhaps I should look at the emulator again and see what I can do with it. My theory is, however, that, because of unnecessary emulator lag, cutscenes, FPS problems, etc., that TASing even a portion of the game right now wouldn't work too well. Plus, even if it did, it still wouldn't get accepted here yet. Is what you're suggesting that if I actually TASed a part of the game or something, or showed off a good glitch using TAS, or something similar, that I might get community attention for this?

Also, as you read this post, I forgot to mention that I am fully aware of the fact that there isn't really a working PS2 RR emulator, because (for some reason that I don't know) the devs of the two emulators I've heard of have abandoned the project since 2010-ish. I want to encourage whoever was working on this, however, to please (I beg of you!) finish fixing this emulator. Or, if it's open source, and anyone understands the code, I also beg of you to fix it and finish it. This is a TAS that I really want to work on with someone or some group of people, and I really want this game dissected as well! However, let's keep the discussion here more about the game rather than emulator issues, but seriously guys, whoever started it, please please please get back to it with the rerecording emulators. I don't usually double-post, but this time I felt it necessary for some odd reason.
