Three fights took more than ten seconds. I can't vote yes on this slow as balls movie.

Hi Jack :) You're right though in your points about gooma and beyond. I will retest getting the flute first vs doing gooma first when I get there though to make sure the route makes sense. I don't even really remember why doing gooma first was faster in the old movie. Either way, though, the crystal exp is going to happen. Either we up&a at the flute or we don't up&a at all, so you can count that exp in the route.
It was faster because it's two rooms of backtracking to kill Gooma first to get to the elevator that (eventually) leads to the flute, instead of 8 rooms of backtracking to get to the boss after getting the flute. I think it saved nearly 40 seconds or something crazy like that. Magic 6 won't help in the GP since Thunder doesn't go down in cost until level 7. so yeah, 4-5-1 or 5-5-1 with Mago manipulation is probably as good as is worth getting. So I guess it's really just a matter of sorting out the optimal way to be 3-5-1 after the first three palaces?

Actually, the start of that isn't so great since there's probably enough to grind from 2-2-1 to 2-4-1 in p2 with bag drops, and that certainly doesnt amount to the time saved in the hammer room from dying. Scratch that part. EDIT: I'm also not completely thinking in terms of cancelled levelups in certain spots. I forgot what a pain planning a route for this game can be. FURTHER EDIT: Also, in my head it's now looking more like a tossup between cancelling attack lv4 and killing barba and thunderbird with a lv3 sword than accepting the level and killing them with lv 4. accepting a levelup takes about 7 seconds I believe, yes?

okay, after rewatching and rereading the thread, I _may_ have a level up path sorted out: -On the hammer run, instead of dying intentionally when grabbing the hammer, kill the last daira and end with 1-3-1. You'll lose 8-12 seconds at a very rough estimate from the death shortcut not being used though. -wont' have to wait for exp drops at p2 to comfortably reach 2-4-1, though helmethead will be a marginally longer fight since it's not a lv3 sword anymore -p3 has just enough to reach 2-5-1 -use the crystal in p4 to reach 3-5-1 -" " p5 4-5-1 -do p1 -skip p6's level up since m6 is worthless and attack 5 will require something like 2200 exp pre-crystal. if memory serves, attack 6 is 4000, meaning you wont even have to cancel a level up after killing thunderbird. -will need a magic refill in GP As you mentioned deaths are about 6 secs, crystals about 10+ secs, the suggested tradeoff in the hammer room is theoretically equalled out this way, and you shouldn't have to go terribly out of your way to kill anything for exp (except maybe in p3) Maybe this works?

Alright, this route isn't working out. I'd like to hear some ideas so I can refine it. Goals: -skip the bonus experience from crystals -maximize sword levels where possible -leave the leveling the same through death mountain as in the WIP above (2-2-1) -walk into palace 4 with level 5 magic -palace 1 can go anywhere in the route after an up&a
Watched the wip, looks nice so far! Damage boosts & intentional deaths obviously save a lot of time over the prior run. Noticed a couple other very tiny things that probably saved a couple frames (red jar in p2 for example is probably faster than in the old run). Also, the movie desynched for me before the helmethead fight, but that could be a one off accident since I havent replayed the fm2. With regards to your defined goals there's a couple things that immediately come to mind: -crystal exp skip; we proved last time that it's (much) faster to do the crystal before the item for both palaces 4 and 5, so you'll get two free levels there. 6 obviously is a waste to up+a due to the distance from the starting point, so there's the last "freebie"- though it might be best to try and get there with minimal exp and cancel whatever lvup your prompted with to not have to cancel the 50 exp life level up the moment you kill something in the last area. -even sword levels barely qualify as an upgrade as far as tas-speed attacking goes. Shoot for level 3 or 5 to be optimal (7 likely not feasable due to crystal skipping, and magic 5 being a downright prerequisite for palaces 4 through 6) -this is probably best to have a level 3 sword for helmethead -yes, but also for much further down the line keep in mind you need either an intentional death or a red jar drop in the GP after the lava room but before thunderbird unless you have lv8 magic. Also, the room where you'll bounce on dragonheads might need a lower attack level to not kill them as you bounce up over the wall (then again, I forget how much HP they have) -if exp permits getting to sword level 5 before you head to p6 and the endgame, save p1 for then. more thoughts in a while

A solid idea. And yeah, I was able to capture Cave Story, so it must be something with this game. Welp, desktop software it is!

Bummer. Thanks for looking into it though WP, I really appreciate it. I suppose I can just make use of standard desktop capturing software for now, though the quality won't be as good.

I do, yes. I wonder if it maybe only recognizes certain ones or something? I did try just now installing a couple recommended ones in the articles on the site, but still no-go. I'm running windows xp on this machine if that helps any.

I should clarify a bit. I follow the steps you linked there, but when it's supposed to prompt me for the file location/codecs etc. it doesn't, it just begins a playback of the WTF file. I've tried with and without fast forward checked, same either way. Thanks in advance EDIT: I've also tried redownloading hourglass, deleting the config file to start with fresh settings also. I am using version r81 if that helps also.

Anyone familiar with this tool know how to encode video? All I see in the AVI drop down menus are checkmark options for capturing video, and they don't seem to do anything whilst checked? Appreciate any help. -J

Well, I like my run better from an egomaniacal perspective, but this is obviously superior. Yes vote.

Yeah, I'm a musician, it's basically the only thing I'm genuinely good at (oh, but I'm certainly adequate at other things, no "poor me" here). I aspire to be a professional one, but it's quite frustrating as how much of what is generally perceived as "success" in music is largely outside of one's control. I suppose, it follows from here that I play in a fairly stagnant band. If you happen to care what we sound like, here is a link to our youtube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/NZOfficial . I will quickly point out, though, that of the songs on there I only wrote three of them (and one of them I'm not terribly proud of). Also, I'm the energetic one, if that wasn't already obvious from me complaining about the rest of the group being stagnant. I sing, play guitar and bass, piano, drums, working on violin... someday when the resources are there, I'd love to learn concert harp (those things sound incredible). In my thoughts, everything ties into music in some way... I'll find beats in most noises I hear and subconsciously start trying to follow this imaginary beat. I have all sorts of annoying music lines that seem to conjure themselves out of my subconcious in accordance to certain things I do on a more or less daily basis (the only non-irratating subconscious jingle I have is associated with smoking, maybe that's why I'm addicted... hmm). Hell, even things I don't subconsciously associate with music I'll make a conscious effort to; here's a relevant (and possibly embarrassing) example: I wanted to turn a TAS into a song, around half a year ago. I took one of the shorter ones (Harmony of Dissonance Maxim) and came up with some arbitrary set of rules as to how input would correspnd to certain notes and rhythms.... it was a disaster, but still oddly satisfying nonetheless. Lot of you guys are vocal about having trouble composing. I, generally don't find it problematic, so to possibly help you guys out (and also because I'm passionate on the subject), here's my general composing process. It starts with an Idea. This is the hardest part. At times, I find myself out of ideas (or overflowing with ideas) and it's impossible to start. In these situations, I generally cheat a bit and take a 3 or 4 second passage of a song I find incredible, and tinker with it to the point that it is completely unrecognizeable. This will then serve as my Idea to start with. From here, it's just writing around the Idea, and expanding as needed. Theory helps, I can usually fire off ten to twenty different voices to add to the Idea through counterpoint, harmonies, synchopation, emphasis etc. When theory doesn't seem to be going anywhere, intuition takes over. Really, the Idea is the hardest part. When done, I sit back and listen to the "finished" song. I'll write down anything that comes to mind, be it a particular emotion, concept, person, whatever. Then, I'll listen to it again and decide which thing I listed best suits it. That is now what the song's meaning is. Then, I go back to the tinkering phase, to better emphasize the meaning I decided upon. At this point, it becomes obvious whether or not this is an instrumental piece (in my case it usually is). If it's not, lyrics come next. I have a notebook I carry around with me and write down any neat metaphor or rhyme, or just any cool sequence of words. I'll pick one of these things out, and build the words around it. For content, I'll defer back to the intended meaning I decided upon, and try to think of someone who's story is a good fit for the meaning. The song then becomes their story. I never write about myself, that's what the instrumentals are for. Lastly, the song needs a name. This is the second hardest part. It's never as obvious as it should be with lyrics, and I don't like naming instrumental things after their intended meaning. Then, I privately kiss my own ass if the final product is great, or file it away in the hard drive if it isn't. What else... Just listening to music is awesome too. I mean, actual listening, not just background music to a game, the car sterio, background noise at public events. Like, the whole of your being is devoted to the listening of the music. Alcohol can enhance this for me, but I have to be alone- and rarely am, sadly. Alright, I've rambled enough. This is probably the longest forum post I've typed up anywhere (outside of submission comments), guess that goes to show how passionate I am on the subject.

Baww, I'm never wrong. Consider it a very large, and surprisingly coherent, typo. Also, I feel that full-game runs in general should end at the credits. That said, I'm not the one making the run, so ultimately it's up to you to decide what to do with the last level(s). The run is clearly far more optimized than the one I did, so I doubt the inclusion/omission of the "bonus" levels is a big deal either way.

Idea: Since, at the moment, the game doesn't work in Mupen, there's another option. The game plays replays of your levels, so, it's fairly trivial to savestate one's way through a stage and then play the replay. Of course, these other emulators that can play the game don't have frame by frame, so perfection is unlikely, but a few replay-runs of the neater individual levels might be... fun? at least, until Mupen gets it's shit together and runs the game. Just something I thought of since I'm playing through this game lately (48/57 plats, I hate racing levels)

Pretty sneaky way to end the input. Also, idea- in your submission it was mentioned that warping through that bonus room to the penultimate boss would crash the game everytime- perhaps try the invisible barrel dealie with a different bonus room? say, one in the 3rd level, first world (cave level). Perhaps the destinations are different depending on the level/bonus room you warp from....? Or, more likely, perhaps I'm an idiot.

Yo. I finished a little somethin' somethin' a little while ago and can't submit it. Everytime I open the submission form, the site shows me a page prompting me to log in, although I already am... tried a different browser, same deal. Other pages on the main site don't log me out like this.... Bug?

You can't lean in 2.3, and leaning is essential to strafe Val like a motherfucker. Nice to see bunker done, I'll have to watch it later on.

I'm pretty sure that screws up the overall levelling strategy and loses time overall. Killing Horsehead like twenty frames faster isn't a fair tradeoff to losing a few hundred (or more) later on due to not having enough MP for a fairy spell at some point. It's good thinking, but won't work. The only known improvement is using (some very ugly looking) death to save time on a couple of the items that can be picked up as a fairy.
