I would be very interested in seeing TAS disaster manipulation. I remember leaving my SNES on overnight as a kid to see how much damage I could manage and, if memory serves me right, there were still a decent amount of buildings still standing... I guess the easiest thing to do would be to make sure the power plants get taken out right away.
Well, here's a thing about disasters: they depend on your difficulty. On Easy, you'll only get Fires and Plane Crashes normally; unsure about Floods (I usually bulldozed all the shores, but once it happened on the edge of the map anyway). Crank it up to Hard and you'll be getting Earthquakes, Tornadoes, and Meltdowns on a regular basis - notably, the lattermost won't happen on Easy, and I believe is restricted to Hard. Also, stray away from pixel art of NES stuff IMO. They don't deserve as much as they get. Try thinking grander-scaler!

I was going to vote no due to general extended boredom, wondering if EXIT could've been of any use (Waterfall?) and suggest that solo Thief be cooler because Thief is useless, then

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Therefore, to describe my feelings on this movie and potential frame war, I'll just leave this here.

So here's the way I see it. All points considered in this topic, I think we can best compare this to, believe it or not, save data corruption. When you corrupt save data, what you're effectively doing is interrupting the game's access to the save file partway through the process, generating bad data. With an FMV swap, you're interrupting access to the disc partway through the process, generating bad data. User "rog" brought up a good point: that depending on the game, its programming will respond to the swap differently. Not every game responds as favorably as FF9 does to disc swapping. I know it works in most cases in FF7, allowing you to sub in a shorter one (with a few freezes in certain situations), but in others it'll just lock up. With this in mind, and with DarkKobold's idea that it could potentially be used in interesting and impressive ways to destroy games in ways we only thought possible in the early console days, I'd say the best thing to do is not deny ourselves of that possibility. But when it comes to FMV skipping, I guess we can compare it to the other controversial debate right now - effectively a way to cut time off an already long run, but not something that should be depended upon alone for saving time. Saying "but we can make an encode that skips the FMVs themselves" isn't really productive/the same for many reasons. In short, I'd say allow disc swapping mid-game at unintended points, and add a tag to such runs that says the run does as such. In the event of severe corruption via disc swapping, it'd be a different category. With that in mind, the only issue left is which discs can be swapped in. The best thing to do there IMO is only allow discs belonging to the game itself, as well as a lack of a disc. Otherwise, a run that could switch in an altered disc that just tells the game to trigger the ending or something would technically be allowed. On other notes, a scratched disc would be best compared to a bad ROM, and thus would be out of the question. Crooked cartridge is a whole different beast, but really isn't comparable to either of these. At best guess, I would say it's like temporarily denying access to certain parts of the program, forcing what's left of it to deal with the situations at hand. Basically like RAM corruption and/or temporary ROM corruption. It's a whole different debate, whatever the case.

So I see we have a great big fucking mess on our hands here. Taking a neutral view, here's how I see it. On one hand, the points about it significantly speeding the run up are legit. The dangers of rejecting it solely on the grounds of the rules have enough merits in and of themselves to consider it. It's a great run anyway. Furthermore, there's a decent number of Japanese runs out there, and allowing them into our ranks would benefit us twofold. They say rules are made to broken... However, by accepting this run, we do set a dangerous precedent. Keep in mind that readable text DOES improve the quality of a number of runs - that trait does exist. We don't want to reach the point where half the runs on the site are in what may as well be code to a good portion of the viewers, solely for saving a minute or two. Is it really worth unbinding that nexus? So we'll have to be careful. Here's our options. - Allow an exception for this game only, a-la Rygar and final input. The best in theory, but if another such game in a similar situation comes along, we'd be in an even bigger mess than we are now. - Allow a faster version based on language to be used if the improvement gained is significant enough (say, 10+ minutes?) whilst not interfering with the overall entertainment factor. Probably the most logical option and best overall, but the growing pains here will hurt. People bringing up the a-word is likely. - Allow this to be submitted, but allow a run in English to obsolete it if it's faster without the gain. I only mention this because a couple people were throwing it around; personally I think it'd be too big a pain to see exactly how much gets saved - especially if it comes to apply to other games. So yeah. That's where we stand IMO.

I couldn't get behind 3. The Bubbleman scenario pretty much killed it for me, and also exemplifies how annoying the net eventually got. So I'm not sure how to react to it potentially being TAS-raped, especially with so much VarSwrd. May as well, though!

We do need to ask ourselves: where does the line of entertainment get drawn? You can only be surprised so many times, then it becomes repetitive. Is the purpose of TAS to prove a point, to see just how many orifices the game can violated in, and which leads to the finish (regardless of how big or how small) the fastest? Or are they here to amuse, said violation being a vessel to show off an impressive way to beat the game? From what I understand, the force behind this glitch is to be able to warp from place to place, from certain locations. This is cool and the skipping of the Light Arrows is long-awaited, yes, but in a massive run, at what point does it stop being interesting? At what point would it take over a run, and interfere with showing off other aspects, glitches, and crazy gameplay of the game? On a less dramatic/more serious note, I'd personally view this kind of warp like in Link's Awakening. Like, you can warp to the swamp via the Kennel, but it's unused in the normal run. I guess what I'm saying is, I'm curious as to how this new trick is going to be viewed in terms of MST and 100%.

I'm not sure how to react to this new trick. Right now I'm leaning on "blows the mind, but in the end bores it". :\ I just hope it doesn't affect 100% or even MST (which I've heard they've been experimenting with via technicalities), turning them into just warping from one place to the next one one after another. Or even if it just leads to delaying a new run of the game even longer. It'll be interesting to see where this goes in any case.

Actually, in this game, Link's goal is to collect eight instruments and wake the Wind Fish so he can return home (he was shipwrecked on Koholint). Zelda doesn't appear in this game.
I think hegyak meant: Link needed to get out of the dream (i.e. Link's Awakening and Koholint) fast so that he could properly save Zelda in another Zelda game. Because, you know, she always needs saving, whether or not Link is napping on the job on a piece of driftwood.
Actually, I always thought this was weird. Link is in the middle of the ocean floating on what little remains of his ship at the end. Does he like, just die there or something? If not, how does he get back to civilization?

Yes. It only applied to the Blue Moon Version. In Woodman event, you cannot encounter a battle or the game will be freesed. I heard that VBA 1.80, which VBAM(-rr) is based on, fixed the problem.
Not that you'd be encountering any battles there in TAS anyway. Besides, you can also do the MetalMan scenario there instead. A choice of version between those two might be interesting to look into. It really boils down to if Guts + Roll/Wind + Thunder/Search is longer than Aqua + Wood/Metal + Junk/Proto. The first two are the only ones I've looked at so far, and from that I can say it is not looking good for RedSun at all. Unsure if chip codes or souls will make a difference.

Do a MMBN3 100% run next! =P
Wouldn't that end up worse in regards to just running around a lot? I played 1 and 2, but stopped playing 3 as soon as I got to this dishwasher, but instead of going into the dishwasher, had to go back and forth between two places repeatedly while doing scavenger hunts. So I was like "screw that noise". I'd say 100% might make it more interesting, but because they have multiple versions you can't get 100%. ...screw it, MMBN3 next anyway. There's probably some TAS-only way to make it our bitch, too. On another note, I find it amusing how MMBN1 and MMBN2 have two completely different styles of author commentary. MMBN1 has probably the greatest mini plot-summary and/or most thoroughest explanation ever, whereas here we have what looks to be raw numbers and mathematical formulas.

coming from that really bad (and awesome) poney game, this game is a pleasant surprise. Looks fun to play, the dresses make sense and the gameplay is wonderfully mastered.
Naturally! Barbie's not only owns a variety of vintage automobiles, but she's owned all manner of animals, including ponies. She's been everything from an astronaut to a zookeeper. Plus there's always Ken. And even though if it were not for his being Barbie's man would call serious question about whether or not he is a fruitcake, with that removed he would still be manlier than the Ponies. She's a symbol of American culture! She and Ken had a supportive role in Toy Story 3! She's been ripped off by multiple other companies! Barbie is something everyone can enjoy to some extent without compromising their masculinity. Anyone male over the age of 16 who watches My Little Pony had better be doing so to try to bond with their young daughter. Video games, and by the same token TASes are no exception. MLP's gotten shovelware for games and TASes made for the sake of making TASes of the obsession which threatens a generation of humanity. Barbie has had her share of passable games, and this TAS shows off one of them quite well. So yes.

Nope, the GS Ball only works if a certain flag is set. Obtaining the GS Ball through an event will set this flag, as will the proper cheat code. Simply hacking or glitching the GS Ball into your bag will not. All event items work this way.
It's been a while, but I'm pretty sure it works if it's just the item. I swear I was able to work it with just the item way back in the day. The flag stuff was only implemented into the third generation Pokemon games. I've found no information to the contrary that it only works if a flag is set (and in fact, many parts talk about potentially using it to get teh GS Ball), but the next day may need to come from giving it to Kurt. Which might exclude it anyway unless the run's long enough.

* Ah. Possible improvement, then? * I see. Didn't know that about that method; then again, it pretty much became a relic no one talked about after the Old man method was discovered. :/

The only thing pretty much is how to get Mareep, Flaaffy, Ampharos, Girafarig, Remoraid, Octillery and Celebi (since the other ones not obtainable in Crystal you can get in Yellow).
We might be able to grab some glitch Pokemon and try to successfully transfer it over. If we can manage to convince the game to make the transfer (research might be necessary there), the following notable Pokemon could be picked up. - Scizor (MISSINGNO. 1F) - Remoraid/Octillery (MISSINGNO. 50/51) - Kingdra (MISSINGNO. 79) - Porygon2 (MISSINGNO. 86) - The GSC Starters: various other glitch Pokemon (can also be gotten with cloning) There's others, of course. For Celebi, you could be clever and grab a GS Ball as part of the Celebi Egg glitch to cut out one of the uses of it.

All right, got done watching this finally, and I got a couple questions. * Why didn't you catch 'M again after the battle continued in order to get Ditto? * Did you ever consider using the in-game trade version of the MISSINGNO. trick?

I'd see Crystal as a distinct possibility if the playstyle only uses the Celebi Egg glitch for purposes of getting otherwise unobtainable Pokemon. It'd still be boring, but not as boring as if it was used to glitch anything that would save time. We could do things like glitch GS Balls, evo stones, and candies onto the Pokemon to get what we want without too much fuss, either. And though this is a little insane idea, if someone can put together a version of the emulator with Game Link support, we might be able to like, run Yellow in one window and Crystal in another, dual-TAS style. It'd cut out the need to Celebi Egg glitch too much on Crystal, though the only problem is, what to do with the other version.

I think that effect is well covered by the pic of going over water. The one on the roof though makes it seem like there's some secret way to get on the roof.
Personally I'm opposed to both Saffron screenshots, considering we used it before in more or less had it before in the last any% run. Also, for the record, top 10 = Fishing on water Catching Mewtwo in Poke Ball Dying in the Safari Gate M evolving Wartortle leveling up Wild Ivysaur Biking over water Level 1 Mew being caught Safari game ending? I'd say horribly fucked up graphics, but that's in the current Red publication. If we can't do a GIF for any reason, do the Mewtwo one or fishing on water.

That would largely be unnecessary because level 100 Mew kills everything anyway, and catching glitches is largely unnecessary except for turning them into Rhydon or Kangaskhan (or Ditto for 'M) for the Pokédex. Even then, the only Pokégods with usable stats that don't (always) crash the game are PC4SH and PokéWTrainer, but both are Normal/Ground with only Hi Jump Kick as an initial usable move. (They can be taught Body Slam (STAB) or Thunderbolt by TM, though).
Well, my idea was thought up in reference to the talk about Super Effective messages earlier.
Mukki wrote:
Also, by the time you get to the Elite Four most of the pokemon can survive one hit form a L100 Mew so there are always going to be super effective and critical hit messages.
Level 100 Mew can't OHKO some of the Elite 4's Pokemon in one hit without Super Effective moves, which is why I figured something with higher stats like PokéWTrainer could be used to deal that extra damage needed. It'd have weaker Psychics if my math is right, and a bit of time might be wasted on making the game not freeze, but it could save out in the end. Just wondering if that option was actually explored. I do have another thought as well, but I need to get around to watching it this in full already to see if it was actually viable to begin with.

Do you mean the high level ones at Cinnabar coast? The game resets them to L100 as soon as they gain experience.
No, I mean Pokemon like Missingno.. Some of them have particularly high base stats, which equates to more damage. Plus, there'd naturally be the entertainment factor of using a PokeGod.

Also, on the subject of the movie, obvious yes, but one curiousity. Was it ever considered using a glitch Pokemon in order to cause more damage to the stronger foes (Elite 4)? On screenshots, thus far, ??? (probably something horribly glitched) > Mewtwo catch > Something with Missingno. > 151 owned IMO. I rank the latter so low (to the point of where I'm just fully against it) because it just seems so plain, only really showing off that the goal gets completed, and not any of the assorted insanity in the movie itself.

Wasn't really amused by this at all. The NES version is just slower paced, and overall more poorly designed than the Gameboy version. I found myself falling asleep at multiple points in the run, and eventually just said "forget this" halfway through. Have to give it a "no" vote.
