What's so great about the princess run, anyway? It's slower and shows off less tricks than the mixed video. It just seems like a suboptimal run when using other characters would have been faster. I don't understand why it's recommended, there are other videos that are better IMO like, Zelda, Metroid, and Batman.

Never underestimate the effects of small systematic improvement. :) I've seen it happen in many videos. But yeah, since the game is already so short, it's probably a few seconds. I would try to make a video, but I already have too much on my hands and limited computer time (i.e only weekends). So you're on your own I'm afraid. >Hehe.. I'd never had thought of it unless you told me about it. Damn his dress is ugly. To bad the movie desyncs while using this mode. Otherwise it would have been fun to watch to the end. Hmm.. I will go ahead and save some states to check what other stuff looks like. :) That's how I found out originally - the game defaulted to Japan, and your video desynched. If it hadn't desynched I wouldn't have noticed either, just assumed that was how your character was supposed to look like. I guess you'll just have to play your way trough to check.

>Yes. I do loose speed when landing. But jumping has to be done since I still wanna move forward and charge at the same time. Would be so boring and ugly to stand still and wait for the power meter to build up and then continue to move. Hm, yes, but this is not quite what I had in mind. I mean that if you are not holding a charge, you can continue at your current speed when landing. If you are holding a charge, you will stop when landing and have to accelerate again, which takes time. In level 2 you carried a charge a very long way up the stairs, which made you stop every time you landed. It looked like you could have started charging later and not made all the stops. Same thing in that first level with the flamethrowers, after you get the quick charge you can charge fully in just one jump - no need to walk around with a full charge. About the first boss - I understand the problem. It's not possible to carry your charged shot from one screen to another, I suppose? Another thing I noticed now - the diamond subboss in the level with the yellow goo. You shoot him from the left side. The game starts scrolling directly when he's dead, isn't it possible to stand on the right side? No need to thank for the comments. You wanted critizism, after all. (And you would probably have gotten it even if you didn't want it. :P ) By the way, did you try to set the country to Japan? A lot of the graphics are changed, for example the protagonists dress, and the whole intro (quite possibly the story too, didn't bother to translate it). I didn't play trough to the end, but the princess might have green hair. (Not sure if that's her in the intro.)

Some questions: First of all: I have never played this game previously and only two minutes now before I watched your video, so everything I say might be uninformed stupid non-issues. It seems you lose all your speed when you land, if and only if you are currently charging a shot. In some parts it seems like you carry around a charged shot for very long, making many unneccesary stops and accelerations. Have you considered this? Some bosses seem like they are not hit as soon as possible. I'm thinking for example of the first sub-boss, where you are to the left when firing; the first boss which jumps before you shoot the first time (perhaps you don't gain control soon enough, I don't know) and the black flying boss at the end, who seem to stop flashing some of the time before the next shot hits. Did you try different weapons at the last boss? He doesn't seem to have a cooldown persiod like the others, which makes me think the flamethrower might be effective. Sometimes, when you wait for a flamethrower to stop, it seems you wait as close as possible to it and start walking just as it stops shooting. Wouldn't waiting a few steps away and starting to walk a moment before it ended make it faster?

Installing ffdshow (the alpha, not the latest full version) did the trick for me. I don't know which specific codec is used though.

I'd like to add one vote to the "Beat em ups can make interesting time attacks" side. I haven't seen this one.

Actually, yeah. But my programming skills are only good enough to make small, crappy games (snake or paratrooper clones are the ones i've made so far). I've wanted to put my ideas into games for a long time but it's probably not gonna happen. Just like you, i know how most game projects turn out. But that's not a good reason for not trying. If enough people feel like doing this, sure, I'm in. Game design is probably my department in that case. Possibly I could compose music.

Yeah. Everytime there's a movie, Jean Claude has to play SOMEONE, right?

I could play it, but it suffered heavy sound/video desynch. Sound is way ahead. But since most videos are like this I suspect it's my computer. The latest ffdshow alpha (not full release) was all I needed to watch all the videos.

Ok, sorry in advance for thread hijack. I thought the batman run didn't take damage elsewhere because it wasn't very benificial (long stun period), but I might be wrong. Where else would you benefit from damage? To get back on track, did anyone else have trouble with sound desynch in this avi? The sound is way ahead but I suspect it's only on my computer.

The Batman run does take damage. For example at the boss with the electric attack thing. The only thing which I could think of improving in this video was the ice thing (already pointed out) and at 1:21 it looks like you could jump up on the platform instead of climbing.

It seems to me some people who are seeds are not really uploading. Sometimes i get nothing with three or four seeds, somtimes i get good speed with one seed. With a lot of seeds though, I always get something, even though it's sometimes slow. I got 400 sometimes with wellseeded videos (for example zelda when it came), both in upload and download. But now since I moved I'm mostly a leech because my connection is very poor and sometimes just doesn't work at all. :( sorry.

No, it's not. But that's one of the challenges with the game I guess. It would probably be too easy otherwise.

Found this just now. A simple game, but I like it. http://www.wagenschenke.ch/ I've gotten 180m as best so far. Having played Tony Hawk would proabably help, but I haven't.

>Now, in this run, no matter what I do, he always breathes fire at least twice to start. I've been at this one for a hell of a long time and haven't gotten anywhere. Any hints, or do I just keep trying and hoping? I hate it when this happens. The only cure I've found is redoing a longer part, and then an even longer part, and so on. I spent several hundred rerecords to get okay (not even great) enemy movements in Kid Chameleon. Sometimes small changes just don't work. The position sounds like what should be triggering the boss movement. (That's how I would program it, at least.) Have you tried standing further and further away, pixelwise? Just tossing this out for you. I have no clue really.

No, I'm not a fan of the game. I didn't know that you had to be one to be allowed an opinion. (Perhaps the Aussie Rules Footy was only for the fans, too.) I only suggest that you allow your own movies to go through the same procedures as everyone else's, and not publish them without review because they happen to be yours. People may disagree with me, of course.

>Right here right now, this video had been downloaded 181 times and only 4 person doesn't like it. Um. Downloads is more an indicator of how many people are willing to check out if a video is good, not what they actually think of it. Also most people do not register and confirm an account at a board just to say that one video wasn't that good. But out of the regulars here, five out of five would have voted no given the chance. What other video would have been published with that kind of rating?

So I'm planning to learn some C. I know there are some good C programmers here, so I thought I'd ask for tips. Where can you get a good (free) compiler which works under Windows? And an editor, preferably with indenting and syntax checking? Any general programming tips are also welcome. I've programmed qbasic, pascal, ada and scheme (lisp variant) before if that's any help...

Depends on how the game is programmed. Some games depend on user input (current time, position on screen, or buttons pressed), others just give items every n:th enemy and are pretty unmanipulatable. Like Rygar or Link, for example. Yours might be one of those.

>I got 0:13:12. Huh? Sounds impossible to me. How did you do it? Also I don't understand what you mean by doing reloads. Can you explain?

>This submission should not have been published like that ˿ 1.5 minutes after submitting without anyone having chance to review it first. Good thing you picked up on this. I also felt it wasn't a good idea to bypass user critizism like that. That being said, I probably would have voted no on this submission.

It's a measly four frames. Pilif erroneously wrote 4 seconds. It's more like 0.07 seconds. There is no need to redo for that, unless the hexedit works.
