I played on easy or normal most likely, but anyway hearing this feels like a bit of an ego boost :) Toki stops every time he fires, right? So a run will probably consist of a lot of running.

Is there more than one Toki? I remember playing Toki on Mega Drive and getting through it without that much difficulty, so this sounds strange.

OK, I'm sorry I was unclear about the extra dash moves. The 6-button combinations are mentioned in the japanese manual, and therefore it should be ok to do the 3-star move from the start. See here: http://www.classicgaming.com/soronline/img/sor3/sor3_bk3_manualmoves_axel.jpg

>If memory serves, there was only three levels of power for each, and only three different types, total. X.x There's a secret weapon level too! Grab two shields in a row to get it.

If you can combo a lot of enemies at the same time with Max that would be cool. That is for practical purposes impossible in real gameplay. Hm, yes. Axel rocks the robots pretty easily. He can corner them to the left and do the allmighty grandupper over and over. I've actually gotten this to work in a real game too, and since they rise so quickly they all go down in a matter of seconds. You still have the sword all the way up? That's cool too.

Getting Super Axel (or Ash or Shiva) depends on doing a secret button combination. Those demos that have used such earlier have not been accepted. Roo should be ok, if you get him by beating the clown. But then you have to die, which is pretty inefficient. The extra star dash moves however are in the manual (at least the japanese one) and as such should be legit. For beating this game quick, my guess would be Axel or Blaze. Axel has the beat-all jumpkick in this game (despite what the stars might say) and good ground, but Blaze is faster and has better grappling.

>Yep, I was expecting you to come into this thread right away. =) Heh, what can I say? I'm an absolute sucker for Streets of Rage. :) About the jets, yep, I get it to work basically all of the time. Here's how: Walk forward, and turn around and walk left as soon as the music stops and you hear the sound, it should be around the middle of the screen. If you're unsure, try reversing a few times before the middle, closer each time, and will eventually get it right. With a save state this should be no problem. Skate has a quick throw in both directions for toppling enemies, his running head butt is very fast and packs a punch, and he's the only character able to run, which might help since this is a time attack. Well, most of the time the game scrolls automatically, so it's just a matter of how fast you can clear the enemies. But there are some areas where you can just run. Yes, Axel's GRANDAPPAAAH is the best move in this game, exceptional for mowing down large quantities of enemies and getting a knockdown fast. AND you get temporal invincibility. Axel is not very fast with some bosses though. Max is definitely faster at Zamza, Abadede and Bear. It's a close call, I think we'll have to experiment some. A two-player attempt would get the best of both worlds.

The warps are your choice of course, but I don't think it's very different from "welcome to warp zone" in Super Mario Bros. I'm sure there are plenty more places like DM2, the iron column level, and others where picking the right helmet in advance can cut time dramatically. We just have to find them. What runs are you thinking of doing now? I might try to do this if you are going to concentrate on something other.

1) Only three bosses can block: Barbon, Zamza and Shiva. Shiva always blocks with no damage, so he is no target. The other two block sometimes with no damage, and sometimes with damage but no stun (this is the version we're after). It works best on Zamza, where you indeed can chop off one lifebar or more in one move. Barbon usually blocks with decreased damage and falls after a while (I haven't quite worked it out yet). Both ninjas and kickboxers can block, but they take no damage. 2) The hook gives three hits if you're at point blank, face to face with your target. It only gives four hits if you're actually inside the enemy (after a jump + attack down usually). This is all in my faq by the way. It's almost mandatory if you're making a run. http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/genesis/game/6774.html Now, which is faster, Axel or Max? I really don't know. Max is stronger but worse against many enemies at a time. Although I love to play him, I usually go with Axel if I'm to get trough Mania alone. But when I play mania, I play safe rather than fast, so who knows? Maybe even Skate or Blaze could be faster. My bet is to go with both Axel and Max though :)

Well, I am obviously not very experienced at this game. I didn't even know about the running slide. :) The strength of the laser saber weapon you used also surprised me, I have never been able to use that in any meaningful way. I didn't know about throwing the dice downward, either. You skipped some parts of the game by running past them, I didn't know you could do that.

I watched it and you did some cool things I didn't know about. One possible way to speed it up is to switch to one of the single weapons for a short moment so you can shoot when objects are out of your normal range. Assuming that switching weapons can be done fast enough, of course. I haven't tested.

The secret warp to Woods Of Despair: Do Blue Lake Woods 1 & 2 and get all bonuses (time, no prize, no hit). Do Highwater Pass 1 and get time and no hit bonus. (You have to get the helmet here, no prize bonus isn't possible.) In Highwater Pass 2, take the teleport to Elsewhere A, and take the cyclone. Exit into Under Skull Mountain 1. Go down a bit in this level, after a while there is a secret room you can fly to in the upper right portion. Smash the four blocks for 10,000 points and the warp will activate. (There is another description at GameFaqs, but it's crap. Use this one instead.) Even if you decide not to use this warp, you should consider taking the cyclone anyway because it cuts down time a lot in both Under Skull Mountain levels and Lions Isle. The berzerker shortcut after Shishkaboss (or am I mixing it up? the iron column level anyway) is very cool and I think you should use it. I meant at Boomerang and Bagel. Isn't going out of your way to speed up a few seconds what time attacks are all about? :) In Devil's Marsh 2 you could opt for the cyclone after you open up the path downwards with Red Stealth. The cyclone is slower at the end of DM2, but saves some time in the following three levels; Knight Isle, Whale Grotto, and Hoverboard Beach. Don't know which is faster, you'll have to experiment. Decisions, decisions... >I'm impressed you actually beat it. I usually got stuck somewhere around Devil's Marsh back when I was a kid. Hehe. *takes a bow*

I really want to see a good run of this. It's one of the harder games I have ever played, and it's responsible for a smashed-up controller of mine... Good luck with it.

Heh. I'm only pointing out such minor things because the rest of the run is so good. I'd like to do some runs too (perhaps Alien Soldier) but I haven't gotten around to it yet. I'm not sure, but there could be a faster way with less doors in the tiger castle. I think I used a different path anyway. But as you say, those failed childhood memories are dangerous, and this could be one of them. I had one of those when discussing Rygar. Interesting how you imagine things and then remember them.

I thought you could take more hits without looking sloppy, but that's just me. I know other people are more averse to taking damage in these runs. If it saves time, but not otherwise, I think it's OK. You used the berzerker a lot against the bosses. Does the his headbutt do more than one jumping hit? I think there are samurai and axe masks lying around which possibly could be faster. I know, this game is fawking long. When I played this game on a real console getting through it could take one to two hours. Mostly because I died a lot, of course :) The final levels are hell. If you are using warps except for the end-level one, will you be using the one which leads to the level after Boomerang Bros? That takes some skill to do, after all. But perhaps it is more interesting to see the first half of the game done quick too.

Looks very good! There is a huge shortcut in the level right before Bagel Brothers which you miss - after you take the cyclone helmet, you can go left and fly right up to the flag.

Also, you forgot to slide in the entrance to the room before the scepter.

Why do you wait for the green boxes in the narrow hallways in Mexico castle? I think you can just plunger them and slide right through, no?

What I forgot to tell you about my Maniaxe idea... I seem to remember that having maniaxe, standing in a passage exactly two blocks high, and using megafire on both B and C, I was able to excede the normal throw rate for the axes by silly amounts. Trying this in Gens, I cannot get it to work. You could experiment a bit though. If you get it to work one or more of the bosses could be improved in interesting ways.

There is no secret difficulty in SoR1, only SoR2. The strength differences aren't that big between the characters. Adam and Axel have the same strength for all moves, Blaze is almost the same except for a few moves. Check my Damage list on GameFAQs for more info. There are damage lists for SoR2 and 3 by me there too if you are interested. For the firebreathing fat guy, you can grab, do two knees, jump over him twice and grab again. This is more for safety than for speed, I suspect.

Faster timeattacks tend to get published with a video, but full run-throughs without warps usually get at least a FMV. So if you have the SRAR rom, you can watch it anyway if it's done.

Much much better... It seems that jumping on enemies gives you a boost. You could try jumping on the dragon just before the rubber hole. If it's possible, it's better to land quickly after the rubber hole, i think. You run faster than you jump. Why do you linger so long on the bottom at the final boss? Isn't it possible to get on top of him faster? Also, is there a Maniaxe mask somewhere there? I might have an idea. The little stunt flip you do at the bottom, I'm not sure but I think it freezes both the time and the game. So in the timer will be the same, but in real seconds it will be slower.
