yes, and they turn us into mindless zombies that frequently go on killing sprees! Ask any mainstream media! @FeelTheMagic: there's a list of game ideas in the FAQ. Maybe it'll help you choose a game to run. Luck manipulation is explained somewhere else in the FAQ.

so, it's basically the same glitch, it's just triggered differently - not by up+down, but by something I don't quite understand. right?

it's meant to show outstanding publications, that are recommended to watch, but for some reason won't get the permanent star. The moon only appears on the recent addition-list on the front page and NewMovies.html But yeah, an alt-text or something couldn't hurt.

well, read the documentation of your video driver. In case of nvidia, use the MetaModes-Setting. google retrieved the manual: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2001-Jun/att-3012/01-TWINVIEW_README for an ATI card: I've never done it (I don't use the TV out on my notebook), but I know it's possible. hunt down the docs and read them.

I haven't used gens on linux yet, so I'm just throwing around ideas. you could ask your window-manager to force gens into the specified size and position. If your window manager supports it, and gens can handle being pushed around, this might be the easiest option. or you could patch Gens to be xinerama-aware. do you need your usual monitor while using gens? If you restart the x server with a different konfiguration, you can switch off twin view, and use fullscreen mode just on your tv. At least with the nvidia drivers, you can also add a fullscreen mode that'll only use the second monitor. That reduces the need to restart x to a simple mode change.

even if guano ends up redoing a lot of it, I'd still like to see the current version. So, yeah, what mwl said.

whoops, you're right, screw my tactic. But flagitious has the solution, so I won't bother fixing my way.

mirror, repeat. As predicted, 9 additional pieces were used and completely removed (0 to E and O to Q)

no, see my previous post. If you count pieces, you can only add multiples of 4 to the board, and only remove multiples of 10. When starting with an empty board, you'll never have 9 pieces left over. try finding a sequence that leaves an even number of rows with 9 1-piece objects, preferably 2. Be advised though, that you can't achieve this with just 18 pieces, you'll need more. You'll need at least 4 extra pieces that'll be completely removed by finished lines, or any multiple of 5 more (e.g. 9, 14, 19, ...). This still doesn't prove that it's possible, it just rules out some ways that can't succeed.

Let's look for a tactic, that'll allow us to return to a previous pattern, in this case a clean floor with one hole in it. Then we'll have a sequence of insertions, that can be repeated over and over - not reaching any arbitrary height, but at least multiples of our sequence. every piece is 4 fields big. we'll look for a sequence generating h new rows. if every field should contain only one piece, at least h * (width-1) pieces have to be used to create this pattern. so, h*(width-1)*3 fields were removed. This number has to be divisible by width, otherwise that weren't full lines. this doesn't prove that such a tactic exists, it just proves that you'll need different tactics for different board widths, if you're relying on repeating sequences. in other words: the proof is going to be much more complicated than just finding a generic working strategy.

well, this site uses emulators to record runs, I wouldn't expect too much knowledge about console recording from here. sda is not run by nate, try there.

cheeseman, I wish to express my appreciation of your choice to keep your hands off of alcohol, and wish to encourage you to keep your determination. That's a very wise choice you made there. You can't even behave when you're sober, you're bound to run into trouble when drunk. sincerely, Tub Btw, I never drank amounts of alcohol exceeding the yearly glass of champagne on new years eve, but I don't see reasons to be militant about the use of small doses of alcohol in controlled environments (i.e. at home, away from traffic and small children).

@Ozmodiar / Wren: it's a high resolution video, encoded with an advanced codec at full 60 fps. If your computer can't play the video at full speed, it's likely that your computer is too slow or has misconfigured gfx drivers. Try enabling frame skipping in your video player, if it's supported (mplayer has this option). (It played fine on a 1.5 Ghz Pentium M at 50-60% CPU load, with hardware accelerated video)

Well, I've found out how to add the disclaimer.
Well done. The Publisher Guidelines mention that the TAS-disclaimer should be positioned during gameplay, so it'll stay in the video even if someone cuts the intro off. If you already started encoding, don't worry about it - it's not THAT important for a test-run. Just keep it in mind for future encodings, if you'll be doing any.

I've already voted against #2. If this is published, I'd like to see an unmodified version, and the camhack-version (if there is one) clearly marked as such. since I doubt that a dual-TAS-encoding is the right way to go here, and it looks like a lot of people want the camhack-video, option #3

Frankly, I've never seen it being done in any video.
Problably because none of the existing videos was tool-assisted. mwl said it's too risky on a console-run, because you lose lots of time if you don't get it right.

BTW, there was a bit of trouble last time since I didn't put some sort of disclaimer in the video saying it was done with emulator assistance, etc. Unfortunately, I still have no idea how to do this...
I don't know either, but you might find some hints on this page: http://tasvideos.org/HowToMakeAVI.html subtitle adding should be generic across all emulation platforms. Depending on your encoding process, you'll find the right hints there - at least I found some for mencoder when skimming through. By the way, thanks for taking the time to encode this!

Keeping the search field on a seperate page discourages lazy users from using it, thus keeps server load lower. It also somewhat ensures that those able to reach the search function are also capable of formulating fitting search words. Natural selection, if you want. The userfriendly way is to put it on the main page, though. anyway, thank you for this feature.

to clarify: my vote was for the original, unmodified version, which I watched. I considered how the game looked if played with that input sequence on a real GBA, not how it might look on a badly hacked console or a hacked rom. The rules say "The movie should look like it could have been played with an authentic hardware." yeah, that's probably nitpicking, but still.. I wouldn't mind if a cam-hacked avi is released in addition to the unmodified avi, but I won't give extra voting points if the movie looks better on a modified game.

I'm torn. It's well done, and judging by the amount of time you invested in the cam hack alone, it's probably as good as it gets. I just don't find much enjoyment in watching the camera try to keep up or seeing points counted. SA2 was much better suited for a speedrun. Meh vote, sorry.

You'd expect a Reverse-Boss-Order-run to become easier with each boss.. going underwater is slower, but harmless (as in: mistakes slow you down, they don't kill you). He'll have to adjust to the new physics, but at least he's not going to have to redo half of maridia because he ran out of energy. I suspect some experiments with route planning though, the existing NBNM-Runs never cared too much for speed, and the optimal (TAS-)route is yet to be found. Saturn, thanks for the update. I'm still looking forward to the run. Good luck with everything, I want to see you escape ridley with 1 energy left. ;)
