That was a very odd game. Voted Yes even though it was a pacifist run and thus had far too little killing. ^_^

Is it just me or is this absolutely one of the most boring runs ever created? Voting Meh.

Yeah, I also have my doubts about calculators saving any time at all. After all, there is this little thing I like to call a counter attack. I can only imagine how cool it would be to see one guy run into a group of 4 only to counter every single blow sent his way. It'd be like watching Neo whoop some bro-bot ass... only in super slow-mo. Not to mention this would issue a nice amount of extra JP. This run is a nightmare to plan but the eventual run will be spectacular to anyone who played the game. Good luck to whoever runs this.

For me the best part was shortly after getting the Giant Bat soul there is this poor skeleton... it sees the player coming right for him and it has its arm raised to throw its bone... then bam. The speed in this run was amazing. Ir's amazing the GBA can keep up. Yes vote.

I'd love to watch that video but I can't because my PC is far too crappy and can't even run a DS emulator. T_T What kinds of things have you found out in regards to luck manipulation? Once we know how effectively item drops can be manipulated and how easily you can force bosses to do what you want and thus take them on at lower levels you'll probably see more people trying to plan the run out for you. Also, can random encounters be avoided or greatly reduced? The big question is how fast can you go deep and thus power level to the minimums needed to cheese out a win against the big baddies. We'll need to figure out what weapons are easily obtainable and serve to give you the edge needed to keep plodding on. I hope you continue this run and somebody encodes the WIPs you post so I can offer up some help.

I think the point is he didn't want to have to redo the entire TAS just to fix a minor error. Cash planning will inevitably be a factor in the next version of this, but for now I'd rather just stick with getting as much done as possible. You are quibbling over less than 30 seconds of a 7-hour movie, and it's not relevant to mull over it as much as you have been doing, just for some small ego-stroking or percieved chance to prove you are contributing, when in fact you are wasting everyone's time. tl;dr, let's move on and focus on the rest of the game, that stuff can wait for another version.
If you feel he is wasting your time then don't read his posts. I for one like seeing him post because he is one of the few people still asking questions and questions are good. Some day he might be the guy making a new FF7 run because he asked so many questions and spent so much time in the topic he knows all the tricks. Whatever your problem with him is, stop bringing it into the forum. Your attitude against him is disproportionately hostile. Back on topic, here's hoping your free time comes back soon. ^_^b

The run looks very well made. Admittedly I am no expert when it comes to Mario but if the run does sync up with the (U)(!) ROM (I watched the encode so I don't know) then I see little reason to not vote Yes. Maybe this will inspire a full game All*Stars run someday. Voted Yes.

No. I don't like that idea at all. It would make the TAS far too dull.

What happened to the theoretical Kalm flashback skip? I was looking forward to seeing that.

I assume its when you use the gold chocobo to skip a few places. You get the ship and then instantly get a gold chocobo. Then you go to Ipsen castle... I think. Been a long time.

Yeah, I can't imagine getting the lure materia would be worth it in any way. Skipping the Zolom on foot is the only way to go, even in real time... it's super easy to do. I would imagine getting lure takes a couple minutes whereas waiting for the Zolom to be in a handy spot takes mere seconds or less depending on his random wandering (again, in real time... avoiding him on foot is super easy).

I still think the only feasible way to make this run (from the standpoint of the person running it) is to get the foundation for a 100% file. Grab anything that you can't get later on and just rush to the end. Grab Excalibur 2 and beat the final boss. The movie can be stopped at any time so it would be a good starter kit for somebody to actually pick up where the TAS left off and finish that challenge. Maybe a new type of TAS could be spawned from this, a Starter TAS. I would watch a run that actually shoots for 100% but I doubt seriously that anyone would try to be frame precis on getting every card and with a unique variation on every card too. Getting a 100% file as graded by just the game is hard and long enough... getting a file as graded by that guide... well... nobody will do it. Even that WIP that was posted already blew the chances for a perfect as soon as the thing started. Totally ignored the treasures in the Airship and town.

So not only has Capcom been just rereleasing the same game over and over again but so have the hackers of those games... Funny. I enjoy these multiple game projects. Good luck.

As long as this run is going to be, I'd love to see it actually performed. I've actually done the run myself and I loved doing every minute of it... as opposed to actually just playing through FF9 which I find to be rather tedious. I wish we would see more challenge runs on this site actually. The concept "If you’ve ever wanted to see how a superhuman would beat your favorite video games" is nice and all but real life superhumans do Low Level challenges with a bunch of self imposed silly rules. On that note though, there are a lot of things done in that run that take a vast amount of time... but are mostly done after Excalibur Two is obtained. Those should certainly be skipped (no need to get 99 of every item or even 1 equip able copy for anyone capable of equipping with one left aside from items that are miss able) and the run should probably just set the framework for actually completing the challenge after the fact. The best part of a run like this is it showcases absolutely everything in the game something most TASes lack.

The only subtitles this game needs are one describing how a particular trick is being done, what is being equipped and why, what item was just snagged and why. A game like this is not meant to be TASed for people to watch like a Let's Play. Half the charm in the Mother games come from talking to the myriad people a TAS would simply ignore. So why make it on the U rom if the J rom is faster? Isn't that a rule on this site anyway? I know there is a rule saying patches need special exemptions and I fail to see how a translation could fit into that exemption rule. It adds nothing to the game. My 2 cents.

So uh, can't help but notice the WIP is like 1 or 2 days late. C'mon, you can't expect me to believe you have other stuff to do! Just kidding. ^_^ Hope everything is okay.

It's just a crying shame that you can't get a 100% save file due to a programming error. Unless there is some sort of trick I never knew about. Either way, this game was easily one of the best games for the N64 in my book, so a TAS would be awesome.

The power bounce seems to have a limit on a per-enemy basis, and after so many hits it automatically stops. To test this, try equipping Double or Nothing and observe that you can have a power bounce end without a miss. For Bowser I think this is 6 hits; for a Goomba, 101. Presumably the other enemies are on a sliding scale between those.
In the Thousand Year Door the limit for any enemy was 9999. There as a debug badge that performed all moves flawlessly when equipped... I accidentally used that damn move one time with the badge on. Went upstairs, made some food, went to the bathroom and came back down and he was still jumping... then I got 100+ pages in a book I was reading at the time and was stunned when he finally stopped. Had to finish the fight and proceed in the game far enough to look at the records billboard. 9999 jumps... and I have no idea how much damage that poor enemy would have actually taken.

Wow, glad as hell to see how much homework you are putting into this. I mean, in all the runs and all the challenges I've done I never even tried to use a C.Claw on any boss after Astos. Glad you are doing this, flechette. Very much so.

Ah, thankfully some real progress on this. It looks pretty optimized to me so far but there are a few things I was wondering on. During the pirates battle you let one get an attack in, I assume you couldn't get so many to sleep without sacrificing time or stat gains upon leveling? I've only watched the encode so far but I'll be taking a look at the vbm file later so I had to ask. Oh, and as far as the 15 puzzle is concerned I assume you have some way of figuring out the minimum moves? There was a program that would do it for you if you can find it. EDIT: During the Garland fight Baron gained Str and Luck. Kelga only gained Luck. In the pirates fight Baron Only gained Stamina for his first level and Strength and Luck for his second. Kelga gained Stamina first time and Strength Stamina and Luck for the second. If you want the Monk to be doing as much damage as possible he'll need some Strength and Stamina each level you end up getting or at the very least off the easy to manipulate levels that you'll be getting. Luck certainly plays a role in damage as well in that it makes it easier to get critical hits. Monk Hands ATK = [STR / 2] + [(STA + 1) * 3 / 4] Monk Unarmed HLM = [STA / 8] Monk Unarmed GLV = [STA / 8] Monk Unarmed ARM = [[STA / 4] * 3 / 2] Master Hands ATK = [STR / 2] + STA Master Unarmed HLM = [STA / 8] Master Unarmed GLV = [STA / 8] Master Unarmed ARM = [STA / 2] Numbers in brackets like -> [x] means to truncate them; or round towards 0. So [5.9] = 5, [8.3] = 8, [9.0] = 9. I'm sure spending a few frames before each fight to manipulate your gains would pay off in the end. Temper certainly will be the main form of your damage gains but those minor boosts from your forced levels can't hurt. At least I doubt they would. Hell, at the very least you would want to gain agility every level up to maximize the hits per attack. Great run so far, though. Those are mostly just theorized improvements I suggested.

I was thinking that the map would make for some interesting playaround material. You can edit the map even during battles so all sorts of things could be done with it. Obviously a fully realized map could be drawn out in a matter of seconds but you could also do other things like draw a portrait or even a multi-floored flip book animation. ^_^ As for the Deep Dark Evil Floors... those can only be accessed, if I recall, by doing the quests from the town. One of which requires you to spend a few game days on a floor killing enemies. This can be bypassed (I think there was only one such quest) by walking around in the Fountain area as there are no encounters there... it's just going to take a very long time. I don't recall if those extra floors were needed for the ending or not (seems like they were needed for the "real" ending) so I guess somebody who remembers more about this game than I do would have to clarify. I'd love to make this run myself actually, but after downloading and trying the emulator out I've realized that's impossible. My PC is too old and too crappy to even boot the emu up. I assume it needs OpenGL to run which my PC doesn't have.

This is a request topic. I played through this game when it came out and loved it. I can see it having potential, especially with the user created map aspect. I would love to see somebody tackle this game since generally it is seen as one huge grind fest which I can't help but think wouldn't be the case with luck manipulation.

Go for it, a play around for this would be very fun to watch I'm sure.
