Yes, I can see that it uses cool shortcuts and the jumping in some places quite clearly has required hours and hours of practice... but I really can't see what's so astonishingly awesome about it.
It's that he does some reasonably difficult manouvres consistently throughout the run. Marsh knew of many other shortcuts, but he didn't want to attempt them because they were low percentage tricks that could kill him easily, and he'd have to start over. I think he only spent a few days on his run, whereas LeCoureur took a few months (or so he says). The tricks he uses are mostly nothing new. I think probably everyone in the world could learn at least one or two new things from this, but most of the experienced players already knew how he would attempt to get a star as soon as they saw which star he had selected to go for. A lot of the stars have much faster strategies, that are (obviously) much more random/harder to do. So he does a very good job of picking reasonably difficult manouves without going overboard (that's what a TAS is for). He went on the borderline of overboard :) (= lots of risks in Rainbow Ride)

I also think Zapdos is too expensive.. it's at least a 3 minute detour. Missingno is shorter to do... but don't you have to go and watch that old geezer catch a Weedle first? That could take a bit of time, and make it not so short.. but still shorter! Yeah yeah, catch some poke's in victory road. I'm sure you'll figure out a way to get around it. The Jolteon idea doesn't sound good to me.. he's like lv25, that's quite pitiful. Probably won't get the first hit in any of the fights either.

No. What game is it? How did you make it, and tell us what is interesting about your run (i.e. why should I download and watch it.. convince me it's good!)

I also may not go and beat the Vermilion Gym right away.. I'm currently looking over the possibility of skipping it and just going right at Cerulean instead and progressing on until I pick up Fly, then when I get a chance, Flying back to Vermilion and defeating the Gym then, and also looking into other possible timesavers as well.
Missed this. You need to defeat Lt. Surge to use Fly.
I think you need to do some going back and forth between Vermillion and Cerulean.. it probably can't be avoided by any legit means. Hence my suggestion was to catch an Abra near Cerulean and using Teleport (does same job as Dig, but can be used in places where you can't dig). Alternatively, if you go to Vermillion and you already have Dig, can you enter the diglett cave and dig inside there to shortcut back to Cerulean?

I can confirm what Tilus says. Everything in this game is effected by a RNG. Including the starting stats of your pokemon. So you might want to make sure you get a good one.
I would imagine that the RNG is seeded as the game starts, so after you've saved some states, you'll get the same random nums on the same frames. You may have to skip frames to get what you want (e.g. criticals). Zapdos seems useful in a real-life run. Doing E4 with Blastoise alone means you'll be out of PP quickly, and there's not many PP-replenish items lying about. Zapdos can take out Lorelei on his own very easily, and help against Gyarados later on. It costs about 2.5mins to get him. For an emu run, you may be able to get away with abusing criticals. Abuse dig. The speedrun does a good job of this, so watch it :) It may be possible to nab an Abra near Cerulen and use it's Teleport once or twice, perhaps? You get Dig in Cerulean too, but you have to travel back and forth to Vermillion without being able to Dig anywhere I think, so a Teleport can save time. The speedrun's time of 2:40 can probably drop by 30 minutes. There's lots of wild battles in it, since you can't get repels early. With states you can avoid them, especially in the caves (omgwtf die zubat die!). The other prob with the run is that he got so darn unlucky sometimes - he would pwn an enemy and it someone hangs on with like 1-5 hp left... grr! IIRC, non-critical hits have a bit of variation in their damage themselves. So for example, if the enemy hangs on with a couple of HP, try the hit a few more times and it can vary to be more than their health and kill 'em. In one fight, he got confused and hurt himself like 3 times in a row.. ouch. 30 mins sounds like a lot, but the majority of the speedrun is battles. Finish battles sooner = lots of time made up.

I downloaded the AVI instead of the movie file. My Windows Media Player (v10) is refusing to find/download the codec on its own, and I only get the audio playing. Can someone point me in the right direction?

It came out recently, I think. Actually, I only watched the episode earlier today, so you've got good timing. http://www.tales-cless.org/ (torrent link is there)

It's snes9x 1.43, "improvement version 6", from another topic: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1816&start=0 it has some checkboxes when you want to replay a movie.. depending on what you tick, it may desynch. The 2nd the 4th should be ticked, in the group of 5 boxes at the bottom right.

Thing with Ken.. he can get 8 hit combo with kicks (down + weakest kick). The enemy gets pushed away from you, so the timing of your presses has to be very good or you'll be pushed too far apart before 6 or 7 hits. I did 9 hits with this once, and I think 9 is the max possible this way (even 7 and 8 require lots of save states). If you can chain this on top of another combo, you can perhaps get over 10 hits. I used Saturn's Sagat fight, and half-way through his 8-hit combo I started doing some low kicks and got 10 hits. I think more than 10 would be possible this way. Here's a quick movie I made a few days ago. I haven't played this version before, and I only really know the moves of two or three of the characters.. I really hate some of the characters since they never cooperate, so I just finished them quickly. Use Snes9x v6, with default checkboxes. http://www.cse.unsw.edu.au/~alexpenev/my_ssf2.smv Dhalsim: easy 7 hit combo (see?) DeeJay: I went through one of his sonic booms. And the second one even hit me, but I didn't get damaged, hahaha! Guile: going through some sonic booms. Cammy: boring. If I high punch and she does a low kick, we both miss each other .. I just thought it was interesting to keep that in. E Honda, Fei Long: boring Zangief: simple 8-hit combo (Zangief is wider, so it's easier on him). Hawk: boring (I really hate this guy! Die!) Balrog: boring Vega: I really hate this guy too, he's such a chicken. Round 2 is funnier in SF2 Turbo, since you can play at a faster speed and it looks crazier. Sagat: 9 hits this time (he's really wide!). Bison: some throws. Desynchs: Cammy and Sagat may desynch. Just restart and fast forward. Ok, someone try and get 11 or 12 hits now :)

I don't think the desynchs were a problem with the snes9x itself, but with the loading of a save state while holding down the B button.. when you want to roll and save a state while the roll button is held down, it can mess up. I hope it's fixed in the new version =/

How's optimizing the run on the Japanese ROM version for submission going, AP?
It's not. I started and got half an hour into the game, and had desynchs when replaying it.. grr. A few days after that I picked up ToS, and haven't played much else since. Too busy to do any gaming, but maybe having another shot at recording with the newer snes9x (less desynchs?) is a possibility in the future.

I have done sf2t, but I used Ken since Ken/Ryu the only characters I am familiar with. And there's lots of Ken/Ryu runs about, so someone who's good with another character can make a different movie.

How about trying SF2:Turbo on a time attack? There's no combo counter there, and there's no new characters like Cammy and Hawk, but it's much faster pace and funny.

The CPU Ken beat me in under 6 seconds once. I was DeeJay (eww). So yeah, that 6'53 isn't the fastest possible :)

> and hope the gamecube version i've bought is just as good Tales of Symphonia is a best-bits rehash of all the Tales games so far. You'll find some similar locations, items, summons and techs as ToP. If you've played Narikiri Dungeon, you'll know about costumes (ND2 has about 200, and I kinda wish ToS had more, but it's still a good addition). Many of the enemies have been in previous Tales games as well. It's a very cliche'd game, in almost every respect. If you read this list of RPG cliches (http://project-apollo.net/text/rpg.html - it's funny), ToS follows most of them. But it ends up pretty good.. there's a few surprises in stall. My first playthrough was 100 hours long, including most of the sidequests and item collecting. Just started my second playthrough. It's a long game. And surprisingly funny, at times.

The best SNES RPGs I've played were Tales of Phantasia, Star Ocean and Chrono Trigger. CT has already plenty of fans and runs in the process. Tales and SO have random "encounters" and are quite long and very complicated (they're both with real-time battle systems, not turn based, so it becomes tricky). I think SO required some weird graphics packages installed, and it might be a bit of a bother. On the other hand, Lufia, Terranigma, BoF 1, Bahamut Lagoon and the FF's didn't do anything for me. They were OK, but hardly very memorable.

What are the differences between it and normal Turbo? Do you get some new charaters like Hawk and Cammy, or something?

I've never heard of a Super Turbo, but I made a regular Turbo one some months ago. I used Ken, so it's kinda boring if you already know his moves.. but I think Ken has potential to get the fastest time. Not all fights are for speed, so it's not really a time attack. Just something for fun to watch. geocities.com/spenev/Street_Fighter_2_Turbo.zip (I don't remember what rom version it was)

Darn, I wish this were a 100% run, that might require a bit more strategising and funky tricks (especially eggs). Not that it's too late to change? :)

It's Origin's fault, it only messed up when summong him. I just got the [!] J version and am playing around with it a bit, and so far I've recorded 30 minutes of good quality stuff and am considering some different strategies that will probably pay off, but it's already desynched so I'd have to redo the entire masoleum section >=[. This is very discouraging for me, and I have a feeling that it will probably happen more often ("yay, only 4 more hours to go"), otherwise I might make you a proper submission.

> Why did you talk to the person who said 'Spirits? All I know is the Water Spirit, [...] Does that help you at all?' ? The party doesn't know about the locations of certain things in the game, even though the players (you, I) would know already. I think the "you have to talk to someone to find about location X first" conditionals in the game were: * Demitel's island (talk to guys in Mayor's house in Venezzia, enables option for the ship to take you there) * the Unicorn (talk to girl in Midgard, otherwise unicorn won't appear) * Aska (talk to a girl in future Alvanista, enables option to ask Oz the computer about Aska) * Undine (talk to researcher in the castle, enables option for the ship to take you there). These are from memory. There may have been one other person who mentions the Unicorn, I don't remember precisely. I'm pretty sure about the others, though. > Also, sometimes in shops it seemed like you shuffled the list up and down. What was this for? Why not do it in one straight sequence? When you press R you skip to the next "page" of items, so you skip about 6 items at a time. But in the first two parts of the movie my menu manipulation isn't very good, so it's possible that you may have found an instance where I do it worse off. > I found it surprising you skipped the Olive Village... I come back to it later, there's nothing there until after Moria. Trivia: I think this was one of the first console games to have human speech.... at least the first for the SNES. The Arche/Mint voice is so cute =D
