The highest points possible is 999,950 on NES. More are only possible at SNES release Super Mario All-Stars. It can be, that I am wrong, but i am quite sure, 999,950 is the limit.
wrong. I've gotton 1,104,500 pts without leeching. no looping of the points. "I think it would be nearly if not impossible to get the star *and* get the koopa to kill every single goomba." thats really simple even without the use of emulators. I can get 50,000 on the first level without leeching points using a console.

It didn't transistion to black when going into level 1-2. "And from finalfighter's link, I discover that the YouTube video was recorded in 25Hz. Is there some advantage gained by playing on a PAL ROM here?" I know playing PAL on that game that mario excelerates slighty faster, nearly one game unit faster, 341 in 4-1 can be acheived in PAL version just running through perfectly. definately not an improvement.

I've decided I should make a TAS of this game. Unlike Tetris, Dr. Mario has a definite beginning and end which might possibly make it more suited for a TAS. It's possible to simply start at the highest level, but I think it would be just as interesting, if not more so, to simply start at the first level and continue on up to level 20. Regarding optimization, I've observed the following: - Luck manipulation doesn't work the same way as Tetris. Once the level begins, the pills always come in the exact same order. The only way to manipulate this is before the stage begins (most likely by manipulating the frame the stage starts on.) The types and positions of the virii are very likely manipulated the same way. The virii and pill order might be linked. I'll have to experiment some more to see. - Turning pills actually causes them to move faster. By flipping a pill as it drops, it falls faster. A pill also moves faster side-to-side if you flip it while doing so. - The biggest hazard to speed seems to be the remaining pill bits dropping after a virus is destroyed. Not only do they fall much slower than the pills you manually control, but when you get a chain reaction, it waits for all the remaining bits to land before any additional virii are destroyed. This will have to be minimized above all.
Can you max out the score in Dr. Mario? wouldn't it be better to do that as fast as possible than to get to level 20? I would like to see you get a chain reaction so big that your score maxes! that would be cool.

I dont think the speed increases. I think I got to level 27 and then stopped because I realized this.

sorry for another post. I got 48.6 on track 1. I just thought it was a really good time. I think I might be able to get under 46 seconds, I got like 24.9 seconds for the first lap once, and the TAS first lap is 24.24

well I think I might just compare my videos for that level side by side to see which is faster. I had thought that maybe someone would have known about this already. I think In my reocrd attempts I will try both ways, one is faster, so if i make two successful attempts of getting through the game most likely I will get a 5:08. I hope. anyways, thanks for the help.

I will probably end up testing it on console. I think getting 1 game unit better is the best way to go.

I'm not sure if this belongs in this topic, i think it does... anyways, In level 4-2, I can complete the level with an end time of 358, using the vine to get to the warp zone. When I am going up to the vine, I have to make a decision of which I want to do. Jump higher on the vine, or get 1 game unit better when I land on the vine. my question is, which is faster, jumping on the middle of the vine and getting 1 game unit faster than usual or jumping higher on the vine and getting 1 game unit slower than usual? Right now, I am really working hard to get a 5:08 in smb1 and I figured the best people to ask this question would be you guys. If i get 1 game unit faster, I'm confused whether or not the 21 frame rule makes it so it is faster or not. I think when I know which is faster, hopefuly the 5:08 will be easier to obtain. 311 on 8-4 is just extremely difficult and I dont think i'd be able to pull it off.

wow that run was crazy. I watched the faster one. haha. I really enjoyed how he was flying throughout the whole ending of the game. this makes me want to try and speedrun this game again. Maybe after i'm all done working on Super Mario All-Star stuff. which might be a while from now. I do know that a lot of my best level times in a speedrun were close to the ones in the TAS. I dont think one matches though. Maybe The first level you can obtain a cape. I've done it like that once or twice. I think I'm going to have to buy a new smw cart, I still cant seem to find it. i will probably end up borrowing it from someone. I felt like saying dash would be better than saying Y, I kind of forgot which other button you can use to run as well.

Can you hold a dash button while you are in the air doing 6/5? Or do you have to release both forward and dash while in the air? EDIT: I think I'm going to watch the TAS of smw right now.

Yeah I know, I'd like to see the differences in the runs, NES version compared to SNES. The full completon will probably be better though, thinking again about it.

The greginator, I'm glad you keep going at this record. I hope you get an amazing smw speedrun time. I'm waiting to see how good you make this run. :)

I'm definately downloading this run once it's completed. :) I'd like to see a minimalist run as well though.

I as well thought that that comment was funny. I kind of am hoping he says something like "It's not emulated" because obviously it is. haha. he deleted the video. I wonder why.

I think this kid is just trying to fool me with some TAS, possibly one he made. or an old TAS. the color just makes me think it is emulated. my run is in my signiture. "100.00% chance it was emulated" thanks for the info, I was like, if he did that on console... wow, he beat me by a little. I played sooo much, so for someone to beat me would be a bit suprising. the worst TAS of smb1 i've seen tied my record, so it's very difficult to tell.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=66ARBw1zOwU I think It is a TAS just judging by the color, but i'm not 100% sure.

I still dont understand how you would go about making a TAS on a console. I think it's kind of a weird thing to be doing, since you cna already make one easily.

having a child is the same as making life i guess though. which i thought had a similar process when cloning.

you're not actually creating a life by cloning though. the process of cloning is odd.

what time are you guys aiming to get when doing this? a 5:00 run? I was experimenting a little just a while ago, and realized I could probably get a 5:03 if i made individual level runs and then put them all together.

I had done a run of it and was planning on sending it to TG, they did not want it... i'm not sure why. I dont know where it is now. I was pretty much trying to beat the game without shooting anything. I had to shoot a few things, but that mainly why i got good at the game. I'm too busy to work on that i'm doing my lost levels run, which i think will turn out to be insane. It might ahve been a little over 14 minutes. ity's been a while. i could be mistaken and it could be 16 minutes. i think 14 minutes sounds right though.
