Fantastic work! I created a Family Feud game resources page with this information. I'm not sure about your questions, though - hopefully someone reading this can help with that.

I'm going to agree with that. You shouldn't feel that you absolutely NEED to come to AGDQ. The world will still turn even if you don't show up. It feels kind of horrible that you would sacrifice something you hold dear just to show up. So think of your own happiness - not just others!
Oh, by all means, the world would definitely still turn if I wasn't there. But keep in mind my motivations for doing this - I've lost three out of four grandparents to cancer, my wife lost her grandmother to cancer not long ago, and cancer has substantially altered the lives of several friends of ours. While I don't 100% agree with absolutely everything that the Prevent Cancer Foundation does (neither asassyknitter or I are fans of how hard they are pushing the HPV vaccine on young girls even though there have been some very serious side-effects), the organization as a whole has a reputation for actually using the money they receive to help fund cancer prevention research and outreach. Do I want to sell our personal assets to fund our trip? No, not at all. Would I do it if I had no other choice, knowing that going means a difference in how much we stand to raise? Absolutely.

Thank you to everyone who helped out with this. Now that we've been accepted into AGDQ 2015 I've created a new thread to track preparations for AGDQ 2015. I can't say thank you enough to the people who provided feedback and helped me create the submissions. Here's to a great AGDQ 2015!

My hope is that we'll be able to demonstrate total control at each level (although the lines between just GB control and SGB control might be a bit blurred; it'll be helpful if we can delineate the content in some way). The hope is that the SNES payload can be more elaborate than last year's.

What? There goes the surprise from me. I'm not going to pay for your church.
The word "tithe" unfortunately has an overly religious connotation to it in the English language. To clarify, I mean that we will literally give 10% of what we receive to charities and worthwhile foundations such as the EFF or PCF. On a personal level, yes, my wife and I do give to local churches, but any money we receive from donations here will not be used for that purpose. Does that help?

Not to be too confused but is there a reason the goal is $2000? Wouldn't it be possible to be there during the 3 segments of TAS (or are those days spread out?) and then whatever extra money you receive could go towards extra days?
I don't think it's likely we'll end up with extra money, but if we do, you can be assured it will be passed on as donations at the marathon itself. I've further clarified what we anticipate the trip costs will be and what we'll do if we exceed our goal in the first post. I have no idea when the games will be scheduled but I anticipate volunteering during the marathon for various roles outside of just the TASVideos segments (probably hosting and tech station) so I'm making a vacation request for the entire week and planning on staying the entire marathon. If that changes for any reason I'll be sure to update everyone. Thanks!

I fully concur, and I've clarified this distinction in the first post. For the record, I don't actually see a way to donate to the site right now, although the TASVideos site donations received page is still up; I'm not sure what feos was referencing. Nach, thank you for your willingness to allow me to do this on the side!

If it so happens that you don't get enough donations to go, do I assume correctly that you're going to give all that money to the AGDQ 2015 as a normal donation? (In other words, no matter what happens, if we donate, it will go either to your travel expenses or directly to AGDQ donations?)
I've updated my first post to note that if we are unable to get enough donations to offset our travel costs we will make the difficult decision to liquidate a personal asset to cover the costs (I have four pinball machines I've collected over the years that I really don't want to part with but it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make if it came to that). We have additionally committed to tithing on any donations we receive and we will as always donate to the PCF while we are at the marathon. Thanks for your question!

There doesn't seem to be a good way to get money from Germany to the US. * amazon gift cards purchased on amazon.de cannot be redeemed on amazon.com. I honestly, truly don't blame you. I'd suggest at least taking a look at Bitcoins as an alternative to the crook-infested payment company you referenced (which I already regret adding donation support for). While Coinbase recently added 13 European countries Germany was not one of them, but there are a lot of other resources for getting Bitcoins in Germany. I've been a long-time supporter of Bitcoin but that doesn't mean you have to be so feel free to ignore me. :) If you do happen to find a way to help me out that doesn't substantially inconvenience you I'd greatly appreciate it, otherwise I encourage you to donate to a local cause you support. Thanks!

Update: Our trip itself is now funded thanks to the generous contributions of those listed below; any other contributions we receive will be used for hardware and games for console verification. Hi, I'm dwangoAC, and I would be honored to again serve as the presenter for TASVideos runs at AGDQ 2015 with a goal during our runs of raising $25,000 for the Prevent Cancer Foundation. Unfortunately, my wife (asassyknitter) and I are currently unable to fund our trip due to a series of unfortunate events involving everything from extended family members ending up in the hospital to a senile cat destroying parts of our kitchen to a blown head gasket along with a host of other expenses. It is with a humble heart that I come asking for travel cost assistance. I kept careful tabs on our expenses during our week-long AGDQ 2014 trip and I think it's worthwhile for me to be transparent about what our travel costs were, in part to help enlighten others who might be considering the trek themselves. My records show that we spent $176.19 on grocery purchases and dining out (free breakfast and occasional lunch brought in by PCF helped offset this cost). Airfare after tax was $899.60 (flying in right after New Year's always increases ticket prices). Hotel costs after tax for 7 nights at the Crowne Plaza in Dulles were $734.72. AGDQ related parking, fares, and tolls were only $18.40 (the free hotel shuttle helped). AGDQ 2014 registration fees were $75 ea = $150. That brings our AGDQ 2014 total to $2,098.91, although there were other expenses I did not capture in that number such as donations we made to PCF while at the marathon and bus fares to and from Washington, DC proper for some sightseeing. Overall, I anticipate our costs for AGDQ 2015 will be around $2,000 (the hotel will be more expensive by $20 a day but hopefully we can get airfare a bit cheaper, and the registration may be cheaper this year). I know that asking for $2,000 is, well, a lot, so I want to clarify a few things people have asked me about. First, any donations we receive will go to reducing the sacrifice we will have to make. If it came down to it, we would have to sell some games or a pinball machine we own to get the funds for the trip, and while that's not something I want to do they are assets we have that could be liquidated if necessary. Second, if you're torn between donating to the PCF and helping us get there, donate to the PCF instead; my hope with asking for donations is to use the assistance to help convince people outside of TASVideos to contribute to a cause greater than themselves and I encourage you to donate to the cause you feel most led to supporting. Finally, we will commit to tithe (give 10%) on any donations we receive and pass it on to places like the EFF, PCF, World Vision, or some other well-run charity. Yes, this means that we will have to come up with $200 out-of-pocket or from other sources to make up for the tithing but this is what we've always done and it's never turned out badly. If we somehow end up exceeding our donation goal we will donate the excess funds to the PCF during the marathon itself. I feel the extra money spent to get asassyknitter there is more than worth it - for AGDQ 2014 she knitted some really awesome custom Triforce gauntlets and a Triforce beanie toward raffle prizes and it was a huge benefit having her support and presence on stream (although we made a point later to ignore the immature nonsense Twitch chat had to say about her :). I want to thank everyone who has donated. I'll update this list as donations come in; please let me know if you would prefer to stay anonymous:
  • Derakon generously donated an Amazon gift card
  • Patashu made a much-appreciated PayPal donation
  • Mothrayas has my thanks for a PayPal donation with an encouraging message
  • Demon Lord has my appreciation for being the first to donate with Bitcoin
  • AndyDick donated Bitcoin for a TASBot win!
  • An anonymous donor made a truly staggering PayPal donation an order of magnitude above anything else!
  • An anonymous Amazon gift card came in which made asassyknitter very pleased
  • Qlex donated through PayPal - May your Tetris line come exactly when you need it to
  • A generous, anonymous Bitcoin donation came in from someone known to be awesome - thanks!
  • [your name here today as well if you want it to be! :)]
You too can help us out in a variety of ways: we gladly accept donations through Bitcoin at 1CknXDyb5jTG1Nw1hs437r6fnz7npBSEfA (consider getting a free coinbase.com wallet!) or by sending things like Amazon gift cards to ac@acbit.net. We can accept PayPal donations if that is your only method (I am not a fan of PayPal's $3%+ fees or their past abusive behavior, but beggars can't be choosers :). Anything that helps us offset our travel costs would be greatly appreciated, and if you make a generous contribution and are interested in exposure I'll gladly credit you or your business on stream. Please note that any donations toward offsetting our trip costs are completely separate from donations to keep TASVideos running. If you make a donation and there's something on this games list you'd like to have, just say the word and I'll gift it to you (these are from the various Humble Bundle purchases I've made in the name of donating to the EFF). Thank you so much for your help!

I'm going to use this post to describe the total control TAS at AGDQ 2015 and I'll update this post if the plan we're going for changes and to update the status. I'm somewhat burying this post for two reasons: - I don't want to ruin any surprises needlessly - The first post was really long already :) Unlike last year, I want to make sure that all discussion takes place more or less in the open where everyone can see what we're up to, with the exception of the final "payload". What happened for AGDQ 2014 is that a lot of discussion and testing was overly secretive which made it difficult for people who could have helped to contribute. This time, I'd like to be mostly out in the open about what's going to happen (although more or less posting details only here in the forums or on IRC). The plan: We want to top last year's total control, which is a tall order and truthfully isn't something we can keep doing every year but is still worth attempting. The plan for AGDQ 2015 is to use a SGB and break out of a Pokemon game (either Yellow or Red at this time), use total control of the Game Boy environment to then take total control over the Super Game Boy environment and subsequently take total control of the SNES itself to run a final payload (which *will* remain under wraps other than a generic testing payload). The result is effectively a triple total control coup. To execute this plan, we need to get resources for working on SGB emulation accuracy, taking total control of a Game Boy game as quickly as possible, writing a payload to break out of the SGB environment, and crafting the SNES payload. I am already in contact with Nach about SGB capabilities and he has provided me with some useful notes that should come in handy but we'll definitely need a lot of help for this. If there's something you can contribute, please post in this thread. Thanks!

Effectively, yes; I have a WIP for Atari 7800 but I am unlikely to complete it because I want to focus my energy on AGDQ 2015 preparations. I had been working on various ports for over a year and when I saw feos submit his I decided to just subumit what I had to leave them to their fate.

Also, although the button is the only input, pressing the button itself (inside the game) does not influence the randomness. I use a 64K and 32K linked random generator, that is seeded at the start of the title screen and updates its value each screen-refresh (as well as during the building contruction in the background for random window layouts). I.e. you can manipulate the randomness by waiting more/less frames before pressing the button and starting the game. But once started, the building layout cannot be manipulated anymore... Paul
But yet it can be! :) By altering what obstacles you hit or don't hit and when you jump the building "after" the one you can currently see can be changed. In my work I saw drastically different outcomes depending on what frames I was jumping on and used this to force more "simple" layouts at the faster speeds (to avoid the running through buildings sections). I'm intrigued by how level generation can still be manipulated, but we'll really have to wait to investigate much further until the emulator core is complete (as can be seen by this TAS being rejected). I can't wait to see the C64 core completed; I confess that I'm interested in taking aim at some of your other fantastic creations as well. :) Thank you again for being willing to join our community and for being willing to share your knowledge of the game.

TL;DR: I am organizing development efforts for TASVideos running games at AGDQ 2015 and I'll be using this thread to manage resources and post project updates. If you can help, consider volunteering to fill one of the unfilled roles listed below and I'll gift you a game from this list! I am serving as the project manager for TASVideos participation at AGDQ 2015. AGDQ is a fundraiser for the Prevent Cancer Foundation, and in last year's ~45 minute TAS block and bonus stream that I helped organize we were able to raise more than $12K toward cancer prevention research. My goal is to more than double that amount for this year's marathon to hit $25k and to that end I previously started a potential participation thread, created a pitch video, and submitted our best ideas for consideration. Three ideas were accepted by Mike, the AGDQ organizer - a Playaround TAS, a MK64 modified course TAS, and a Total Control TAS. This thread will organize our development work on these projects between now and January 4th when the marathon starts (internally, I'd like to have all "framework" development complete by 2014-12-09 and all "payload" development complete by 2014-12-31). Here are the roles I am committed to serving in this year:
  • Project manager - serving as the "glue" keeping preparation work on track
  • @MrTASBot updater - generating hype through Twitter posts and interaction with @GDQMonitor's 4k followers
  • PR - serving as the press/media contact for TASVideos involvement at AGDQ 2015
  • Engineer - helping build whatever is needed, be it hardware or software
  • Console verification tester - ensuring runs/payloads sync using true's replay board
  • Hardware provider - transporting equipment to AGDQ and caring for it on-site
  • AGDQ 2015 attendee playaround TAS presenter
  • AGDQ 2015 attendee total control TAS presenter
Here are the things that need resources assigned in bold, updated as people volunteer:
  • Raffle prize manager: Resource needed!
  • Donation incentives creative genius: Resource needed!
  • MK64 run console bot development: micro500
  • MK64 run creation: Weatherton
  • MK64 race presenter: Weatherton
  • Family Feud TAS creation (in lsnes): TASEditor
  • Researcher of Twitch memes who can advise the Family Feud TAS'er: Resource needed!
  • SNES reset switch solenoid development: Resource needed!
  • Pokemon game internals expert: ais523, additional resource needed!
  • Pokemon Red or Yellow TAS'er: Resource needed!
  • SNES emulator coder to improve lsnes SGB support: Resource needed!
  • SNES payload creator: Masterjun
  • AGDQ 2015 attendee total control TAS technical couch commentator: I can probably do this myself but an additional resource on the couch would be helpful
I'll be making posts for individual topics referenced above over the coming days and I'll be editing this first post heavily as we march toward the marathon to keep it relevant. I'm always in #tasvideos on IRC and a lot of up-to-the-moment discussion will likely be happening there. Lastly, there is no way I can say thank you enough to all of the people who have contributed their time and effort to these projects. I have been extremely humbled by the support I've received to have my wife and I attend AGDQ 2015 and present for TASVideos again. This effort is not about me; this is about raising money for cancer research, which is something I care deeply about after losing a number of family members to cancer over the years. My trip this year would not have been possible without donations from fellow TASVideos members, for which I am extremely grateful. All donors and all volunteers who assist with a role listed above are welcome to pick any game from this list and I'll gift it to them. Thanks!

I take it there's no way to manipulate the building generation code to always generate walkable buildings? I mean, it is a one-button game; is that button the only controllable source of randomness?
Correct, the jump button is the only way to manipulate what will happen (that I found, anyway). I never manipulated a kill screen that was passable so I instead manipulated the kill screen to happen as early as possible (apparently by causing short buildings to be generated, we now know). It's definitely possible to run into obstacles and cause the speed to reduce to the point that the kill screen happens later or not at all, but that would violate my goal choice of never hitting any obstacles. I'm very happy with the entertainment value of the run as-is and I'm happy to see it at least got Gruefood Delight treatment, though!

See the original submission text with Mothrayas's comments at the bottom. For the record, I support his decision to reject this based on emulation support but I object to the suggestion that the kill screen is merely a crash - when keeping the objective of not hitting obstacles, the kill screen is absolutely fatal 100% of the time in my testing. The only way to avoid death is to slow down, but I have no interest in a 99,999 score run (even after the emulator support is improved). If someone is crazy enough to attempt it, be my guest! :)

Thanks. I've now done that.
I was able to console verify this using true's original replay board (video proof coming eventually, probably after this is published though unless true beats me to it). Congrats on the run!

Oops. I uploaded the wrong .fm2 file. What should I do to fix that?
I'm not an admin, but upload it to movie storage and update your submission text to indicate where the correct file is. Be sure that your movie beats the existing run, of course. Best of luck!

Hi Paul, and welcome to TASVideos! Thank you for your extremely well-done work.

C64anabalt is a conversion of the Flash version of Canabalt by Adam Saltsman. It uses a similar building generation algorithm as the original and the same acceleration profile. I.e. if you are not being slowed down by the obstacles, the speed accelerates till you reach 16 pixels/frame, which is about 800 pixels/second on a PAL system. I.e. there IS a speed-cap!
I've tried using BizHawk's memory search tools to find a value in memory that increases as the game gets faster and decreases after hitting an obstacle. I haven't had much luck yet as the value doesn't appear to be changing linearly that I can find but it's a rather large address space to search so it's very likely I missed something. If you happen to know where the speed value is located in memory, please let me know, otherwise we'll just reverse-engineer it (that's what we do here. :)

However, for very high speeds, and a building width which is at the smaller side of the (random) spectrum, it can occur that it already wants to scroll on the new building when it's not finished yet. This probably leads to the weird glitching behavior...
That makes a lot of sense - in the TAS there are a couple of small buildings prior to the first glitched building.

Another interesting item is that I think I coded the distance meter for 5 digits only. I.e. not sure what happens after 99999m... But I can imagine that there is no volunteer to try to find out :) Btw, I also coded C64 ports of SuperCrateBox (SuperBreadBox) and SuperHexagon (MicroHexagon) which have a similar endless gameloop...
Well, I definitely wouldn't try it just yet until we can get a Commodore 64 emulator developer to help finish off the core in BizHawk so rerecording works properly but I'm sure someone will eventually try this. :) As a test, if you happen to know the memory address that the distance is recorded in let us know and we'll modify that memory value and see what happens. Paul, thanks again for stopping in - it's rare that a game developer stops by and I'm thrilled that you found this interesting. I still have my original Commodore 64 (although I need to sort out why it throws memory errors when I turn it on) and I'm tempted to buy the C64anabalt cartridge so I can hook up [http://tasvideos.org/ConsoleVerificationGuide.html|TASBot] and replay this TAS on real hardware. If it works, I'll be sure to have @MrTASBot let you know! :)

I have great news - We're in! Three out of five categories made it past the first round of cuts - the MK64 race, the Playaround TAS, and the Total Control TAS (all of which are very likely to survive second-round cuts based on their high entertainment vs. duration ratio). Regrettably, this means that Final Fantasy and the race idea did not make the cut. Despite this, I'm hopeful that both will eventually appear in a marathon, either in their existing forms or a modified form. I will again volunteer to serve as the project manager for TASVideos participation at AGDQ 2015; I've been humbled by how much support I've received already and I can't say thank you enough. There's a fair bit more complexity this year though, so here I am asking for more help. :) I'm going to make a separate thread for work on these projects as all of them will require a fair bit of work to get polished (especially the total control run) but in brief, here's what's needed: - Someone who can ensure the MK64 run syncs/works (micro500 has volunteered) - Someone who can use lsnes to create a Family Feud TAS - Someone who knows about Twitch memes and can advise the Family Feud TAS'er - A method for pressing the reset switch on an SNES (likely a solenoid fired by signal wire) - A talented Pokemon Red TAS'er (yes, Red - more on this in a future post) - A talented SNES emulator coder who can help with SGB sandbox research - An AGDQ 2015 attendee presenter for the playaround TAS (I volunteer) - An AGDQ 2015 attendee presenter for the total control TAS (I volunteer but request backup for someone to banter with, especially someone with deep game and/or technical knowledge) - Donations to help offset travel costs for those of us traveling to AGDQ 2015; Any donations would be outside the context of TASVideos site management handling for a variety of hopefully obvious reasons but at least for me I could definitely use the help this year and I know others who are likely going to attend could use financial assistance as well My internal framework deadline is December 9th, i.e. we should have the final methods to execute these ideas in place no later than 2014-12-09; any final payload must happen no later than the week *before* the marathon (I don't want to be as rushed this year! :) Again, thank you to everyone who has supported me, and let's make AGDQ 2015 something to remember, in a good way!

Doesn't this fall under the same category as things like rhythm games? There's no strategy, next to no RNG manipulation is needed, and aside from the apparent problems with emulation (which don't seem like it'd work in the run's favor), it's pretty damn close to trivial to do with the most basic TASing techniques. It shows a glitch and... is that it?
I'll certainly agree that this is not the most complicated game in the wold (there's only one button! :) but I definitely wouldn't put this in the same category as a rhythm game. The landscape is dynamic - every move you make changes what happens, which is completely different than the rote memorization of a rhythm game. There's also a surprising amount of strategy considering how plain this game looks - as the speed increases you have to decide how you want to time your jumps to avoid causing your next jump to fail, but again as you pointed out this is trivial with savestates (regardless of how they are implemented). For me, what distinguishes this run as worthwhile is that it's something that is impossible to do in realtime. But, I'm biased. :)
