Warning: When making decisions, I try to collect as much data as possible before actually deciding. I try to abstract away and see the principles behind real world events and people's opinions. I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.

I wonder what would be the actual difference between "Forgoes time-saving glitches" and "Contains speed/entertainment tradeoffs" here. It should definitely have the latter, but does it explicitly need the former? http://tasvideos.org/MovieClassGuidelines.html#ForgoesTimeSavingGlitches Looks like it's used when it defines a branch?

Bizhawk and fceux include a whole bunch of lua scripts in the downloadable zips.

Try places where it writes to Xbuf. And obviously where it blits things too (vidblit.cpp).

There's also netplay in Mesen, an NES emulator whose UI is done with .net. So probably it's easier to adapt its solutions than to reinvent the wheel. https://github.com/SourMesen/Mesen/tree/master/GUI.NET/Forms/NetPlay

VPN sounds like an overhead. It's known that Kaillera, or example, doesn't seem to care about this. There's also an open source Kaillera replication http://p2p.kaillera.ru/ though I'm not sure if it works with dynamic ips too. Probably the mothod used there could give some hints in our case too. Anyways, I think if I enable the port in my router, I'll be able to connect using it, like it helps me with QIP file sharing.

About diversity. I can agree with that right now, there's too much of similar stuff in there. RTS/RPG. I suggest one of these: [1297] SNES EarthBound by pirohiko in 1:10:00.95 [2592] SNES Chrono Trigger by keylie in 2:17:08.86 Each of them has better rating than Warcraft, so we should consider that factor. Also, we should pick one FPS, probably not necessarily Doom, ratings would help as well. Regarding Fightings, see this: http://tasvideos.org/Movies-C9010Y-RatingE.html I'd add one of those too. About current runs.
  • SMB walkathon does feel like it's the weakest one indeed.
  • SMB3 "warps" is so traditional it's probably not revolutionary anymore.
  • Super Metroid "RBO" is a tough one, I'd say it's really really good, see the first page of this thread for the reasons.
  • SM64 "0 star" - yeah, probably, same as SMB3 "warps".
  • Majora's Mask - if we drop SM64, we'd need at least one 3D platform there.
  • Mega Man 2 - traditionally cool run, quite obvious what it has to offer, but I would personally prefer Minus Infinity. Because it has glitches, it has planning, it has weapon management and stuff. Or maybe MM1, its techniques have been there for quite a while, so it won't look so absurd anymore I guess, like it did back when it was done. Or MMX "threesome".
  • Sonic 3 - well, yeah, same thing over and over, even though it's a great game and a nice branch, but it seems to have too many weak spots.
  • SMB3 "ACE" - NO FUCKING DOUBT! This has nothing to do with Mario, it's a Total Control thing, there's no way it is replaced with anything other. Pi? LOL, Pi is not even close to that level.
  • Gradius - unsure anymore. I'd drop it if we really need the vacant place.
  • Gimmick! - alright, we can keep it.
  • The first 5 Samsara mentioned - No doubt either.

Alyosha, are there any runs that blew your mind?

I can see Magician Lord (and/or some similar runs) getting newcomered, we just need a consensus here. But we can't keep expanding the list forever.

In my opinion, and I think I can back it up sufficiently, a newcomer rec should first and foremost be newcomer-friendly. Which means they should look and sound good, have intuitive mechanics and the run itself should demonstrate easily discernible level of precision and planning without boring nor alienating the viewer. What is friendly for a pro isn't necessarily friendly for a newcomer. We already have stars for the pros.
Should we get back to discussing the current list again? When relying on the thread I linked, I made sure the runs I picked weren't questionable. I'm not sure we can guarantee that again if we just start changing the list based on the preferences of the people ITT: there's too few of us here.

Dropping the popularity factor introduces confusion: "What? You guys think the run of this obscure game is better than OoT, SM64 and Yoshi Island? Are you goosey?" Promoting less known games just feels weird to me, exactly because people know the popular ones and can comprehend the insanity TASing introduced to them better. So to me, this factor is directly related to the mind-blowingness, which is, in fact, one of the strongest emotions people here on the site still remember. Picking such runs is just justified. So yes, more comprehensive runs end up feeling boring, compared to intense, high quality game destruction we all love to see. And that destruction is more likely to impress the newcomers as well. But do note, that the runs don't have to meet all the criteria. They are more like guidelines, to help with final evaluation. Also, I disagree that blowing one's mind has to do with the age of the run. Sure, people keep finding new insane tricks in new games, and we can add deserving runs to the list, and drop the ones that are indeed outdated. For example, SMAS SMB3 playaround blew some minds. And it's really old. So that's an example of a run that will not be newcomered. SMB3 total control is an example of the opposite age-wise, yet we added it, because it does exactly that: it completely blows people's minds.

I'd vote for Gimmick to stay. We honestly don't need to throw it away in favor of more Mario. There's nothing wrong with having both co-exist, except for "rules" that hardly anyone agree on in the first place.
What are the rules exactly? Are they listed somewhere? (If they are I couldn't find them.) Personally I don't think Gimmick really stands out as being exceptionally good that it warrants a newcomer rec, but I would also say that about mega man 2, mario walkathon, Family Feud, and even Gradius as well. Maybe it's just me, but the newcomer rec list seems really dated. I think Ikaruga for example would serve better then Gradius in there, and one of the recent Mega Man X series runs would be better then mega man 2.
This was my reason for adding them: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13457 I'd like you to read that thread and tell what you think. Also, from the previous page:

A few people have requested that the recent Mario Kart 64 run gets the newcomer rec flag. I can not disagree with that, looking at all the feedback it's getting, yet I'd like to wait a bit to fully see the ratings it will get and make the decision when the hype settles down. But while we're at it, I want to discuss one more thing. The Gimmick 100% run has been replicated RTA a while ago, so this run, while still being superb, doesn't stand out of skilled real-time speedruns anymore. It's arguably the run that's the least different from the paths that are possible RTA, out of all the recommended runs. Also, it was the run that I picked myself, while all the rest were spotted by the crowd as the runs that blew their minds. So I suggest that when we flag the MK64, we unflag Gimmick.

If you end up having consistent 30fps inside 60fps, then it's the exact case when we want a 30fps youtuber, because of this http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=18128

Can you try recording the screen and see if it happens soon enough to get captured? Might help to trace it. Not insisting, just remembering what I used to do when AnS was developing taseditor and I was the main user.
