That option is disabled for me, it tells me it needs 256MB of video memory, but I can only allocate 128MB in VB settings (which is what your dxdiag says too).

The problem with this category in its current form is it doesn't have enough variety and tension. The BG art is amazing, and the level layout is constantly changing, leading to changes in action, but most of the time it's the same limited set of things that barely changes across the whole movie. Floor clips are nice, whatever shortcut the suicides help with is also cool, but overall it does get old eventually. It stayed on Meh+ for the first few minutes, disappearing sprite led to Meh-, then gameplay got repetitive and it became a No, and in the end there are a few seconds of tension that move it back to Meh-. The ratings show that after 2014, when the last big improvement happened, this category stopped entertaining people. I can agree that improvements aren't so obvious anymore, and it feels like watching the same run over and over, without it providing enough entertainment to actually be worth watching several times.

Okay I don't have VBoxD3D9.dll in system32, and the hashes for existing files are different. My VB is 6.0.0. But I see d3d9.dll in dxdiag.

I tried WinXP SP3 in both VMWare and VirtualBox, installed directx 9c, vcredist, guest additions, turned 2D and 3D acceleration on and off, game hash matches, but I can't get Boshy to output any video no matter what I try. There must be something that's not mentioned. Iji runs fine.

I would appreciate a judge's input about the issue brought up in this post of the Dream Team Contest 9 thread. The question is whether or not a level skip button combination is allowed for a run aiming for Arbitrary Code Execution/Memory Corruption/SRAM Glitch/Game End Glitch/Wrong Warp Glitch. The game's developer considers the button combination cheating in 1-player mode but not 2-player mode (sources here under controls and here). DTC9 uses one of the game's 2-player modes. My thought is that the button combination is allowed for those categories in 2-player runs because of the explicit mention from the developer. If I'm wrong, however, I'll change the DTC9 rule. Thanks!

Note that, if the feature accessible in that way is suggested explicitly by the game itself or mentioned in the manual as a normal means of playing, such as level restart shortcuts in the Legend of Zelda or Metroid, it is usually allowed. These rules are not strict, but are motivated by the same concept as the guideline that says you should play on the hardest difficulty.
If the code gives you unfair advantage that makes the game easy, I don't think it should be allowed. If it makes the game harder, it's definitely allowed. If the effect is neutral, it's probably fine. The way the author describes it makes it look very iffy in terms of legitimacy, and the effect of the code is clearly an unfair advantage that makes the game much easier. As opposed to:

The movie rules contain a rule against cheat codes, so if the rules are to be followed, this run would be rejected. However, we need to look at the spirit of the rule here. Normally, cheat codes are used to make gameplay easier - make it simpler to finish the game. However, in this case, the run is not ordinarily "finishing the game". It does not actually make "gameplay" easier, because what it actually affects here can barely be called "gameplay". In odd instances such as these, where the game is not being conventionally played or finished, we can make an exception to this rule.

Dolphin's dumper only writes unique frames with their timewise positions, but the timebase is 1/60, so the result can be loaded by VFW importers without additional framerate info. Dolphin rounds up timing of every frame to fit into this 60fps grid, even though originally they may not be aligning with it. It's constant fps, but at the same time dedupped.

And in the end improving these things might not even matter, unless the frame-rule is also improved. And the frame-rule is a thing on its own. It's not just a case of being faster. It would be much effort to redo the run. I'd say it's something for someone to improve in the future, but I'm no judge.
This all sounds like the entire run will have to be redone to even know if the improvements you mentioned will help.

Doing stuff with the frame-rule aren't quick to fix, and 2 players make a difference in lag too. But it should save some time. I would reject only based on that, maybe he didn't understood what my submission meant.
What if they don't save time in the end? Unreject? That's not how the site works. If the potential improvement is hard to implement and it doesn't certainly save significant amount of time, it's left for the future, as you said too.

That finally sounds like a game mode with an ending. We pick difficulty depending on whether harder mode would introduce more repetition while not leading to more interesting gameplay. If each minigame you play is unique, then there's no repetition, and hardest is the right choice. That'd be any%, at least for that mode. If there's a way to play all minigames for pure speed, that could be another branch. "All Party Games" and "All Pair Games" sound like acceptable branches too after all. Within them you can either aim for fullness or for shortness, as long as you play all the mandatory games. Regarding the playarounds, I'd like to see more variety in how characters act: one char would do things the intended way, one would pick all the absurd options, others could act like some kind of a team, but without the goal to go the intended path. I imagine how hard it would be to control characters independently at the same time, so I'm not sure how to pull this off, but what I've seen in the current WIPs wasn't stunning honestly.

How and when does it end? Does it go through all minigames?

Hi baby. If you have such questions, it means you don't know the game very well.
Judges are not required to know every game very well. If it was required, we'd never have enough judges on the site. It doesn't mean they are babies though. They have enough competence to learn things whenever that is needed. And to know if it's needed, they ask questions first.

Okay, as I understand it, if I were to select any character unlocked by default manually, and then play the movie with it, it wouldn't be counted as "save anchored"?
It wouldn't be counted as "save anchored", correct.
shar wrote:
As soon as I select a different character, onlineLicense.ini is created, which is exactly what you counted in my run as a "save file" (the actual SaveFile1.ini is deleted before playing the movie). Why would that not be save anchored? You just created a save anchor - onlineLicense.ini.
Depending on previous gameplay/completion is what we mean by starting from a saved game. Basic configuration of things that are present from clean start is acceptable, because it doesn't involve saving prior gameplay progress. And with this game it's technically unavoidable, because mouse isn't recorded.
shar wrote:
Also, I'm not sure which movie you mean't as the example: one them is counted as a save-anchoered, and the other one just select the settings.
Blank branch (any% in this case) and "all collectables" have this prior configuration.

Has any java application been designed to run on GBA? The screen size is completely different, among other things. Does squirreljme even run any actual j2me games?

Simply picking a character before starting the movie would be fine in this case, as long as gameplay isn't started, it wouldn't count as save anchored. Example: http://tasvideos.org/Game/windows-iji.html

We don't count save anchored movies as any%. Save anchors are generally not allowed, unless they unlock significantly new features. I'm not judging whether it's sensible for this movie though, just mentioning.

Yes, I included the verification movie that unlocks Dark Boshy in the submission (it's in the archive with other stuff). The only thing is that you can't select an unlocked character unless you use mouse, which is not supported by Hourglass. So, you have to play the movie and then select the character manually.
Is it explained why that character is used, what difference does it have? I couldn't find.

Please talk about the weapon usage. Is supergun used? Can rocket launcher be brought to a boss? Can you select weapons? If you die you're back to UZI?
