It's not a tier, it's a flag. When it was originally created, adelikat and I discussed which MM movie should have it. We agreed that MM1 is just broken into pieces, while with MM2 you can understand what's going on, even tho it's also highly bugged. So MM2 was selected. With MM1 it's extremely hard for a newcomer to understand what is happening when a level just stops, it requires advanced knowledge of NES internals. With MM2 it's just physics, which is why it can be replicated in real time. I'm not sure anymore which MM game should have the flag. RMI was picked because I saw the rating and contents of its predecessor, and it was awesome, but "all items" just stayed in the dumpster in terms of ratings for whatever reason.

It's fixed size bitmap font, there's no way to change it. You can draw this info with lua tho, with whatever font size you wish: gui.drawText.

In some games (specifically 5/6th gen) this greatly saves a great deal of frames due to not loading the music. We only have 2 games where this case is used (to my knowledge), one for loading and the other for reducing lag (respectively ordered). [3157] PSX Tekken by Spikestuff in 01:40.00 [2952] NES Nobunaga's Ambition by CogneatoSwitch in 12:06.37 - Yes, 3rd Generation. Ignoring the tiers outright, not caring about anything in regards to "music is entertainment" and strictly focusing on just this factor alone going forward. Should disabling music specifically to improve the load times (not reducing lag) be allowed in future TASes and would it be a factor in the judge's comments? I will note that if the answer is Yes that this will open the flood gates of previous movies returning in the light with music disabled. This would be a very strong game changer. I wish for multiple Judges, as well as ex-Judges (if they want) to put in their thoughts about this please.

For example, gaining time by switching to another version which loads faster, has shorter cut-scenes, or by more optimized usage of the title screen menus is not counted as an actual time improvement. A movie which doesn't have any actual in-game game-play improvements over its published predecessor will not be accepted.
You have to improve in-game gameplay to get accepted.

Yes, we are limited by "works on original hardware". What is emulated can be seen if you load a C64 game into bizhawk and observe C64 -> Settings dialog.

The pause bug happens by pausing (rapidly) during lag, and the outcome varies by timing. As long as there is lag, you can reach all possible scenarios. I like dadinfinitum's suggestion. All bosses sounds better than Beat Wario.
Does "all bosses" relate to this movie: [1564] GB Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins by andymac in 21:43.52? Is the pause bug used there?

For Rygar and Blaster Master, different region versions were used for totally different branches, but here it's the same branch. Having separate publications that use the same goal but different game versions is extremely rare. Tenchu: Stealth Assassins is the only example I can remember.

Mittenz's post was quite convincing, also absence of low ratings means something, so I starred it.

I need help with choosing PAL/NTSC version. I had Hogs of War Any% done on PAL because of exclusive glitch which affects health of every unit (it's twice lower) which changes gameplay and strats in general, also saves a bunch of time (at least 15-20 minutes). Site rules say: "Due to this, PAL versions of ROMs are generally not allowed, unless there are significant technical and/or entertainment merits to using this version." The thing is - I plan to make a run without doing that glitch. Game runs on approx. 25 fps on both versions, but NTSC version generally runs slightly slower - for instance, you lose an entire second on NTSC over PAL if you chrage grenade throw for 3 seconds or walk on the map for 13 seconds. Can it be considered as "significant technical merit" in my case?
First of all, we can't guarantee that a run avoiding a glitch (or using the game version without the glitch) will be entertaining enough to be accepted to Moons. Here's the rating of your any% movie. Otherwise, it's fine to use a different region version for a different branch if the version difference showcases more unique aspects of that branch. And for this game, since it seems to be a PAL original tweaked later to work on NTSC, using PAL is alright.

Since it's a Moons only branch, making it more different from any% is better than making it more similar. And yes, simpler restrictions are also better than complicated ones, as they feel less arbitrary or hacky.

That's good to hear (or read). As a human being every one of us has unalienable, objective needs. When those needs are being ignored, when natural strive is being depressed, the human nature suffers. Now, when someone doesn't want to stop causing someone else's suffering (regardless of rhethorics), it's a serious situation to consider. Knowing your nature and loving it, caring about it in a reasonable way is the only way to happiness. And happiness is the only way to loving others, as a result of knowing other people's nature too, knowing that we all have it in common. So yes, understand your highest natural priorities, your absolute needs, and reasonably prefer them to whatever other people's will may be. Without being straight and reasonable about it you won't make your will stronger. And will is the only way to connect the whole personality together.

How many games out of the NES library have the DPCM bug?
Every game on a NES console has the DPCM bug. Not all games implement a DPCM bug workaround. And even less games have a DPCM bug workaround that can be exploited. And in most of the cases where you can exploit from the first frame of input, you're just going to end up with a crash you can't manipulate. The principle applied here is not a rare way to trigger the credits, but a rare way to trigger a crash.
Also I find this note rather important in general:

The game itself is poorly programmed. It doesn't matter if the DPCM bug even happens or if it even exists in the first place. This run would also work on a theoretical NES 2 with the bug fixed.

It's feasible to ensure what the intended region is for, I would say, all consoles? If it was feasible for any given C64 game image, of course we would enforce that as well.
The situation around compatible formats and loading times looks really messy. Firstly, we have this rule:
The ROM image must be good wrote:
  • Do not use fan translations, cracked game versions, or otherwise hacked ROM images — translators do not want you to use obsolete versions and we prefer non-hacked games. Hacked versions are labeled [h] and [t].
  • Exceptions may be made for bad or cracked ROM images only if no good ROM images exist, or are not obtainable.
If there are several medium types that the platform supports, we allow conversion between them (to speed up the loading times, for example) only if the software itself remains the same, and if platform in question natively supports transferring the software from one medium to another without any unsupported modifications to the platform itself (hardware or software), and can execute the software when transferred to the new medium.
Secondly, we're limited to what C64Hawk emulates and supports: http://tasvideos.org/Bizhawk/C64.html And lastly, there's this rule too: PC game environment must be legitimate Even though it mostly refers to IBM-PC, any other computer platform with a variety of supported hardware specifications is affected. So we will need to know what peripherals and components were available and default, when, and where. Is this info obtainable these days?

I don't think TASers must do research on every developer or publisher company even if the game runs in the NTSC mode without glitches. As for music speed, it's a subjective criterion because developers may change the speed arbitrarily as seen in NES titles using popular tunes (Disney's for example).

That reminds me of NetHack. IIRC the movie of it would be unwatchable in real time. Of course it would have lots of in-game actions and "traditional gameplay", but measuring it by real time alone can be misleading.

Lizstar , do you know if this game has increasing difficulty aside from the dino moving faster? Also is it known whether his speed increase is limited anyhow? Maybe if you just cheat the loop count to get past this movie's ending point, the dino will start moving backwards at some point and then reset its speed to normal? If that's the case, we don't have to play until unavoidable death, even tho that'd be a valid ending point. If difficulty isn't coded to ever cap out, we only need to represent all unique content that the game has to offer. Now, is there any content in later loops that's not present in earlier ones?

Now, I understand that you see no reasons to make a distinction between the glitch used for this movie and other glitches, as you only feel the positive aspects of it, and that's exactly why I'm saying that there is no objective "right" and "wrong" in this debate, as it all begins from what we want to allow or disallow. I also acknowledge that my point of view does feature some downsides, as well as the fact that it doesn't seem to be shared by the majority of the people here. And in any case, despite how much I'm being dedicated to this discussion so far, I don't need at all costs to have my opinion applied to the final decision, as I could still accept an outcome that differs from what I'm expecting.
From the philosophical point of view, I prefer the objectivist approach: there is one objectively correct reality with infinity of aspects, and it's impossible for a human being to grasp them all, but it's possible to keep accounting for more and more, improving your notion indefinitely. Accounting for more factors rather than fewer makes one happier, and it better fits the feelings of more people. There are objectively "right" and "wrong" solutions/answers, even though absolutely right and absolutely wrong ones are unreachable for us. Yet we can focus on everyone's priorities and come up with an answer that's as "right" as we can afford.

What is the 100% authoritative resource of official information on any C64 game image that might be used in a TAS? We have this thread, and it doesn't have links to a resource we could fully trust.

As I already wrote in this post, it would be a limitation for Vault-only movies that aim for fastest-completion. The only reason it's not the case for this specific submission, it's because the currently published GEG is Moons. My point is: what if it wasn't Moons? That would mean that it's going to get obsoleted and that there could be no freedom left to compete for that kind of TASing. Since similar glitches could be executed in other games, there are chances that at some point we will see Vault movies getting obsoleted by them, locking away the freedom of competing for a certain kind of TASing in favor of another.
There's always a chance some movie can't be improved by "regular gameplay" anymore. And there are always people interested in trying "irregular" gameplay against them. There's still room for improvement, so that part isn't limited. As for the feel of the movie, it's already Vault, there's very little to expect in the first place. We should be ready to lose old movies, because they're boring either way.

This part involved interpretation as well as ideas, and I think we should be more precise with intepretations. I tried to be precise by using actual quotes.

Depending of the point of view, a restriction can limit freedom or can enlarge freedom. If we decide for forbid certain exploits, that would indeed be a limitation, but on the other hand it would leave more freedom to make more Vault-only movies that make use of exploits that don't nullify gameplay, as these wouldn't end up competing with movies like the one from this submission.
I think we've seen them all already, and people got burnt out from both making them and particularly enjoying them, with a few exceptions. So I don't see much demand for more freedom in that regard, especially given that this freedom has always been there anyway. Also I don't think those movies unavoidably have to compete with anything. The difference is obvious, and the current any% is in Moons.

I think it's already resolved by our current rules, and this movie goes to Vault, while the current GEG just stays in Moons. Coming up with a proper label could be tricky though. Also maybe the audience just prefers obsoletion.

No.
That's the problem. Even if there are more "Yes" than "No", it doesn't mean that we can ignore this part, as it's critically important. What's the point of publishing a TAS that produces a video that doesn't feature any form of gameplay, on a site that wants to showcase gameplays?
"Demonstrations must resemble superhuman playing sessions" is not a fundamental requirement of TASVideos. If it was, it would've been a part of Movie Rules. But it can't be, because it's ultimately subjective. How are "superhuman playing sessions" supposed to look? How do we make perfectly sure a given movie unambiguously "resembles" those? To whom? If people disagree, how do we resolve that? To me this movie resembles superhuman playing sessions. What do? Also you're still making up the goal of the site.
ThunderAxe31 wrote:
I'm sorry, but it seems to me that you missed the purpose of my 2) point. It would specifically handle cases like this, by forbidding the usage of an exploit that could be used before starting the actual gameplay, regardless of how was used in a movie. That would mean that I'm not suggesting of forcing an exploit of being used suboptimally, but being forbidden altogether for being potentially game-devoiding, like in this case. Reassuming my idea: 1) All movies should trigger the function that starts the game mode during the movie, before the beating the game, and in its supposed way. 2) Any exploit that could allow to end the game before its normal start, are banned regardless of when are triggered in a movie. I don't see any possible loophole or arbitrariness for the functioning of my idea, so far.
I don't see how my problems are resolved by this requirement, nor how do I consistently apply it, nor why exactly. It's not making things better than they are, but it dramatically limits creativity and perfection as (actual) goals of the site.
