Don't most games these days fuck it up and have it so that by the time you get enough money for the gear you'll have already stumbled upon a new town/shop with yet even better gear? Or while gold farming you'll have leveled up enough to no longer need that gear to get past the point your currently stuck at?

There's a typo in the last paragraph on your blog.
Let plays discover things for themselves don't be afraid of letting players be stuck for a while.
Also, I enjoy games that have secrets in areas you normally wouldn't think was accessible or even existed like in Megaman X the location of the X-Buster upgrade that lets you charge your shots up even further is impressively well hidden, unless you researched its location you would very likely always think you can only get it from Zero. In super Mario BROS., discovering the warp pipes at the end of each underground world was fun, at the time. I... can't really think of many other examples D:

Well this section specifically states that it is for discussion of SNES games amongst other stuff, so it doesn't necessarily have to be TAS related. One of my goals here was to get some discussion about this hack happening and it kinda did happen but yeah I went about this whole thing pretty poorly. I'll just wait until I have beaten the game, uploaded all segments and added various annotations before updating this thread again.

Hmm, I was thinking this topic would fall in to the "Discussion about games" category but I guess not. It's just me advertising my playthrough essentially so it might probably be more suitable if it was moved to the Off-Topic section of the forum. Perhaps my videos can be of use to someone planning to TAS/Speedrun? I'd be interested in a TAS that doesn't exploit the glitch that lets you walk through walls as well as the glitch that lets you rapid repeat dash over pits without falling (That would break Impa's Pathways dungeon so much it would be sad). Part 5 is available and most parts have been switched to the Creative Commons license: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqdNrAdSseA

I've never seen this hack my self I think. Even less so have I played it of course. Are you planning to TAS it too?
No, never TAS'd a thing before. My intentions are to 100% the playthrough in terms of items/upgrades. If you don't like gratuitious use of save states then you should probably stay away from the hack as it has some incredibly tough battles in it, in fact I encounter one such battle in Part 4 that is required to be beaten at the very least, twice in order to beat the dungeon legitimately. I ended up using save states to beat it after a couple legitimate attempts against it though I cut out most of that when editing the video footage. ( Part 4 is also uploaded) Edit: It won;t move the opening bracket onto the same line as the URL D:

I was thinking of recording an entire playthrough of this game and this is the first segment of my playthrough. I find the sound of my voice isn't very good/clear so I might end up adding annotations to the videos rather then speaking over the game. (Or just not add anything to the videos except in the description under them...) You'll notice once I enter the Guardhouse I changed some settings in the emulator, first I switched from a 5:4 aspect ratio to a 4:3 ratio and then I turned off the HQ4x video filter. If you prefer the filter staying on I can leave it on as I prefer it turned on, I only turned it off as I realize some people won't like how it makes stuff appear. (4:3 display mode is a permanent change though as I just can't stand 8:7 or whatever the SNES displays at and 4:3 is what I grew up with) Anyways, I was wondering what you guys think of it so far? Do any of you have any suggestions or thoughts on the video that you'd like to share/see in future segments? Segments: Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5

They can definitely be killed with rapid fire, the problem is staying lined up with them to land all your shots. (Not a problem for a TAS)

Is there a 60fps encode? Or is the Youtube video done at 60fps and I can just download and watch that in my media player? Edit: Nevermind.

Could someone make a video encode of this please? It would be greatly appreciated even if it isn't publish worthy for the site. The description also doesn't explain the energy mechanic that well. During the auto-scrollers you have no health so taking any damage or colliding with anything solid will kill you, one of the purposes of the auto-scroller sections in the game is to provide you with power-ups to use when in a Fortress. Collecting E power-ups boosts your maximum energy which is only available for use while in a Fortress. The only ways for you to die while in the Fortress are, your maximum health limit drops to 0 or your health drops to 0. The only way your maximum health can be reduced is by taking damage while in a Fortress. Energy while in a Fortress is constantly regenerated while not using your Jetpac to move around as well as when you're not shooting. Moving around via Jetpac constantly consumes energy while every shot you perform also consumes specific amounts of energy, not doing either of these will result in your energy rapidly regenerating up to your current maximum.

Man that audio is annoying, the music is good as demonstrated in Super Ghosts & Goblins on SNES though.

Perhaps the people I read saying it was mono were confused. Apparently the Indie Bundle (Non-steam) version got an update or the retail version always included a Remastered version of the original tunes while the Steam version did not. Steam only had New and Old, not Remastered. Today's update to the game however introduced the new Remastered soundtrack to Steam.

Same, I find the lack of irrelevant options more helpful then having to actively ignore them. Though not having context sensitive menus lets you associate tooltips that can explain why the option isn't currently available...

Yes, but I hear the Original music included in Cave Story+ is mono while the copies in the original game are apparently Stereo. I am not confusing the new remixed versions with the old original versions.

For me (running Vista) it puts focus on the 'Show hidden icons' button on my taskbar. What that has to do with the letter B I do not know.
For me under Windows 7 it moves mouse courser to the left most icon in the System Tray which just so happens to be Steam.

An excellent example would be Empire Earth III. Also, is the original music in the free version of Cave Story, stereo? How do you extract this music from the game to replace the ones in Cave Story+? I love the slight level changes on Normal difficulty (more spikes and death pits in some places)and I also kinda like the 20% speed increase though it does make it much harder to control your character in tight spaces!

I didn't notice any flaws in this TAS, nice work :) I am curious about some of the tricks though such as quickly skipping the final section to reach the Big Boss. Also what benefits does rescuing hostages provide aside from Rank Up? Rank Up provides better armor/more health, does it do anything else? Are you required to rescue a certain amount of hostages to beat the game? Can you lose a rank?
