I've never loaded any roms from my cd-rom. I dont even have any roms/emulators or anything else on cd either. But its not happening to anyone else I guess.

When i load a rom, my cdrom spins up for a few seconds and then the game starts. If I dont have anything in the cdrom drive, I get an error saying there's no disc in the drive. Is there a way to stop the emulator from trying to access my cdrom?

Hey guys! I´m making my own megaman x speedrun and I have watched some megaman x speed runs and I don´t know how to do a fast shooting. I know that each time you press the fire button so many x busters shots will be shooted. But like in some speed runs they fire VERY fast. Is there some kind of trick or a glitch? It´s not possible to shoot so fast! Somebody please tell me how to do it! [Edited by Bisqwit: Changed the topic to better reflect the actual question.]
using frame advance, alternate the button you want to turbo on and off ie: to hit "Y" insanely fast... frame 1 : Y frame 2 : frame 3 : Y frame 4 : frame 5 : Y frame 6 : frame 7 : Y ...

Yes it's the first one. I managed to find a different ROM (Jurassic Park v1.1) so I shouldn't have any more problems. I don't mind starting over because there were some things I wanted to do differently anyway. Thanks for the info though, I'll look into it.
you dont necessarily have to start completely over. just continue from where you made your "first mistake"

I'll follow with the flow. Great! I'm gonna be a bit irritating though, wouldn't it be possible to spend all your specialweapons on the DesertStage so that you avoid the delay when the game counts the remaning weapons? You might save a few frames there.
Yeah I thought about that. Same thing in stage 1 I have a handful of leftover bombs. I decided that since the time saved is minimal (less than one second) I'm not going to worry about it. Plus I know in some upcoming stages, like Air Force 2, Submarine, and last stage, I will have leftover special weapons for sure (unless I purposely drop bombs on nothing). But for the most part the special weapon count will be 0 :)

Wow been a long time since an update! Sorry for the delay. Been very busy at work/personal issues past few weeks so I can only work on the movie a piece at a time. It might be a while until my next update so I'll share what I have now for those interested. First four stages (first stage, fortress, desert carrier, minks) are now complete. I also redid a chunk of the second stage. Now instead of dodging the vertical missiles I destroy all the missile silos including all the missiles that are launched from the silos. Destroying the silos is a requirement for the "100% kills". Destroying the missiles launched eliminates slowdown so it actually shaved off a few seconds from the movie. Also it looks cool :) Hope u guys like it http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/40/georgexi-U.N.Squadron-FourStages.smv

Assuming you mean "space is not a problem" literally, use the FFV1 codec for video. FFV1 is lossless (no compression artifacts whatsoever). It encodes 1 minute of animation to 20-400 MB, depending on the video content (amount of motion and so on). The Zombies Ate My Neighbors movie (~60 minutes) for example went to about 5.8 gigabytes. FFV1 is the ffmpeg lossless codec. For Windows users, FFDshow probably contains it. But, the "choppiness" you apparently see is not caused by the codec. It's most likely caused by the method you record the movie. When you use an external program for recording the movie, the emulator won't wait for your recorder. If the recorder is not fast enough(*) to capture all frames, you'll see choppiness (bad framerate). We don't use external recorders at this site for this reason. If you didn't mean literally, then you should use the good ol' mpeg-4 (in whatever variant you like: divx, ffmpeg, xvid, envivo...) with a very small quantizer setting (high quality). In MEncoder, you would give the vqscale=2 parameter to libavcodec. This results in nearly no visible artifacts. Only if you do a screen capture and analyze it with an image editor, you'll notice the colors aren't as solid as in the original. *) Everything matters: Harddisk speed, CPU speed, memory speed, interprocess communication speed...
thanks for the tips. i'm making a compilation dvd of some of my favorite movies from here and i want the movies to be as high quality as possible. but 5.8gb for an hour is a little too big. if i can get that size down to 1-2gb and still have dvd quality, that would be acceptable. mp4 sounds like a good alternative. what do you mean by external recorder? i didnt use a 3rd-party program if thats what you mean. when i recorded the movie, i did so through the "make avi" option in snesx9.

I'm trying to figure out which is the best movie encoder to record a video file in snes9x. I have tons of harddrive room so disk space is not a problem. I would love to have the same quality of picture/sound found in the emulator if thats possible. I tried the AVI/DIVX encoder but the sample movie I generated was very choppy and didnt even have very good quality.

I'm currently in level 7: Dr. Tongues Castle of Terrer (I'm pretty sure that that's the levels name ;P). The tourists are saved and I don't have much left to do before I can proceed to level 8. And here is where my new problem kicks in. Level 8 is the boss level with the gigantic baby running around, crushing whoever comes in his way. So, for my concern. There is the usual 10 victims in this stage which I intend to save, however, when the baby is killed he will transform into a regular baby which can be saved. This means that there are 11 victims in this level and if I save it I will lose a fearsome 2 seconds or something due to the bonus I'll receive afterwards. My plan is however to kill him and get the 11:th victim because I'm going for a 100% run. One alternative is to let one victim get killed by the baby and then save the other 9 + 1 (the baby that appears after the boss is killed), but I think that the aesthic will suffer from this, even though it might be a few seconds faster. But then again, IMO it doesn't really matter since the run will be pretty long. Any suggestions or comments about this plan? If not I'll proceed later.
is your goal fastest time or fastest 100% rescue time? if you have 100% of victims rescued so far, might as well keep it up even if it costs you a couple seconds. i'm sure a 100% rescue is more impressive than 99% and five seconds faster :)

that Forest Fortress battle was MEAN. It always took me 2 passes when I played on a console. You think you're gonna do a one pass fight with Minks too ? :D Actually it's quite easy of you focus on the cannons... but perhaps by destroying the bridge? What's your route through the stages? My route is always: Base -> Ground Carrier -> Forest Fortress -> Enemy Airforce -> Enemy Airforce 2 (the 3 'lil stealths) -> Seavet -> Minks -> Canyon -> *this point I get money for eighter of the planes with Gunpod or if I played with the first plane here I usally get it without doing any moneyruns to Convoys* -> Mountain Base -> Last Base I hate the boss at Mountain Base, even with slowdown I managed to get hit because of those Flamethrower-cannons
i dont want to spoil any info on Minks so you will just have to wait and see :) as for stage order, now that i have enough money for the tigershark, the order doesnt really matter anymore. the bosses will be fought primarily with special weapons and the gun will be maxed by the time i finish the "4th stage". i'm doing a couple tests on the ground carrier right now. But most likely i'm doing the stage the cursor puts me on. i believe the order is Base, Fortress, Carrier, Minks, Canyon, Air Force 1, Seavet, Air Force 2, Mountain, Final. i dont remember who attacks the base first... seavet or AF2 but either way they both will fall fast :)

I'll do a 1 player run beacuse then (as far as I know right now) I can skip the competing bonuses. I've read that if one of the players rescues a neighbour more or so in every stage that player will have a reward after the stage, which takes unnecessary time.
would having 2 players make boss fights much quicker? plus having two players does make it more entertaining although it's a pain to make :)

Thanks for the comments guys. I originally didnt think it was possible killing him in one pass using a crusader and a lev 3 gun. I was originally going to fight him with a tigershark for my "4th level" (I did a one-pass test run with the tigershark in my research and it was possible). I dont know if it's a coincidence but he had exactly the amount of hp necessary to kill with every single shot optimized (my first Crusader test run was a 2-pass where he died on first shot of the 2nd pass). I dont think it's possible to get even one more bomb/shot in there before the weakpoint is invulnerable again. Kyrsimys.. after reading your post, i was aware that the missile silos could be destroyed but for some reason I didnt think destroying them gave you money. I just did a couple quick tests and it turns out that they do give you cash. That's a dilemma because one of the criteria I was following was 100% kills (by kills that means anything that gives you points and cash... enemy missiles dont). I'm going to have to redo that part of the video.

the planning took a long time but that's done. basically i know what planes, weapons, and the order of the stages i'm going to do. i've been very busy past few weeks so i havent had a whole lot of time to work on the real video. i've completed a lot of the 2nd stage but i'm not completely satisfied with the "fancy flying" portion so i'm going to redo a lot of it. however i believe you guys will be impressed when you see how fast these bosses drop :) just a quick poll. should i let the screen fill up with lots of enemies and bullets (will cause slowdown) to keep the entertainment value higher? right now i'm pretty much forced to kill enemies quickly to prevent slowdown.

I remember another glitch when I played on console. I was playing through the sewers where you need the password to enter. There are some enemies that turns your character into a snow man. Can't remember if it was the girl or the sprite that was turned into a snow man. But anyways. As I was about to exit the sewer one of the two was frozen. When the next screen appeared, the character was gone. Never got it back. :D Kinda cool to be that late in the game with only two characters. I don't think there will be any use of this glitch, if someone can pull it off again. I have tried to re-make it but with out success.
i had a similar thing happen to a friend of mine. he asked me how to get the girl back because she died and then mysteriously "vanished". i thought he was being an idiot and told him to just revive her. but he showed me his save file where he was in pure lands and sure enough... there were only two characters. the girl was completely gone. didnt even have a status bar at the bottom. not a useful glitch but still funny.

Well, using that logic, this is the best case scenario: Frame 1 - Use gunpod Frame 3 - Fire cannon Frame 5 - Use gunpod Frame 7 - Use other subweapon Frame 9 - Use gunpod Frame 11- Fire cannon or something like that. If the gunpod fires every 4 and the cannon every 8, then simply spacing them 2 frames apart solves your problems. There will be some frames in between that might be wasted, and there seems to be a lame-duck frame at count 7. If you could incorporate another weapon, that would work. Also, if you could make a different weapon hit EVERY frame ... edit: scratch that, i must be blind
actually it would be more like Frame 1 - gunpod hit (boss invincible frames 2/3) Frame 4 - gun hit (boss invincible frames 5/6) Frame 5 - wasted gunpod hit (boss invincible) Frame 9 - gunpod hit (boss invincible frames 10/11) Frame 12 - gun hit etc. In my description, i said a boss is invincible 2 frames after gettting hit.. so really you can only hurt him every 3 frames. Sorry if I confused you :) Now I could theoretically do that but then i have the problem of the flame turrets killing me. My strategy with the stealth was to destroy the turrets down below with the main cannon while my gunpod is shooting the eye above. that's pretty much what i did when i played this game on the snes years ago.

I can agree that the Cave boss is the far hardest boss in the entire game. I sugest that you atleast try taking out the boss without the Stealth since I would really like to see the Efret ;). Also, doesn't the Tiger support those napalm things? Wouldn't it be possible then to use them to take out the ground units while hammering the core with the cannon?
only the A10 and efreet can get napalm :( the tiger can use bombs, falcons, phoenix, bulppulp, and megacrush. perhaps if i can get some really lucky phoenix shots that only go after the flame turrets, that might work but i doubt i'll be that lucky. i could try bombing the flame turrets but it takes two bombs to kill just one. that also doesnt solve the problem of the flame turrets coming from behind me. the only idea i can think of right now is to from the beginning, start bombing and shooting the hell out of that eye and the instant right before i get hit, shoot off the megacrush. you're invincible once you fire the megacrush... will continue shooting of course... cant use bombs while the megacrush is in use. once the megacrush is done, i'll have a couple seconds in which i continue bombing and shooting the hell out of the eye.. hopefully he'll die before the flame turrets finally hit me :)

I guess it all depends on whether the Efreet will be able to own the final stage fast enough to make up for a "slow" cave boss. I personally don't mind either way, as long as it is done quickly. However, I wonder if it is possible to mix gunpod with your normal cannon on the cave boss using the B52.
i originally thought that was the best way to inflict the most damage in least amount of time (using gunpod and main gun at the same time). but turns out that enemy units, including bosses, are invincible for 2 frames after taking damage. the gunpod fires every 4 frames... the main gun every 8 frames. so basically your main cannon and gunpod would alternate doing damage (every other gunpod shot would be wasted since the boss will be invincible from the cannon shot). alternating the main cannon and bombs does more damage. and yes it is possible to bomb that little eye on the ceiling boss.. though very tricky :) my main concern is how i'm gonna get by those flame towers on the ground below. there will be a LOT of them down there on gamer mode. i honestly think fighting this boss will be far more difficult than the final boss. i'll try a cave boss run with the tigershark once i get to that point. if any unsquad pros out there have a couple hours to blow and want to try fighting the cave boss with a crusader or tigershark to figure out a good fast strategy, let me know :)

just an update for those who care :) i'm still in "research" mode right now so i havent even begun the "2nd stage" yet. i've pretty figured out the damage ratios on all the weapons so i know which weapon combos will kill the bosses the fastest. i also know that i will be using the tigershark for my 2nd plane. i also discovered a little trick with the special weapons which should (hopefully) give me some super fast boss kills. Basically when you use a special weapon, you have to wait a certain amount of time before you can use it again (ie: bombs have 9 frame wait time). However the timer doesn't apply if you use a 2nd special weapon. You can't use two special weapons at the same time since the game "erases" the first one when you fire the 2nd. But if you're up close right next to a boss, you can use your first special -> immediately hit the boss, quickly switch to the 2nd weapon -> immediately hit the boss, switch back to first -> hit the boss, etc. So you can quickly deliver a huge payload of damage in a short amount of time. Currently I'm fighting Minks and the Fortress to figure out which one to take out first to achieve the fastest time. Once I figure that out, then i have to figure out which plane to buy for my 3rd. I thought I'd take a quick poll to see what you guys think. What should my 3rd plane be? 1. Stealth -> ceiling boss, last boss 2. Efreet -> last boss (if my calculations are correct, will have 60-70k for special weapons) Now if i pick the stealth, the ceiling boss will be MUCH easier to kill. i can nail him with gunpod while destroying the flame/missile turrets down below with my main gun. Then i'd have to figure out which plane/weapons to fight the last boss. Ultimately the last fight will be somewhat slower and not as "spectacular" as using the efreet. If i pick the efreet, i'll have to use the crusader or tigershark to fight the ceiling boss which will be VERY difficult. The ceiling boss requires "up" type attacks which both planes lack. I'm guessing it'll be a long hard battle to pull off without getting hit. There will be a lot of moving up and down to shoot the boss and flame towers. The plus side obviously is I'll have the efreet and a big arsenal of weapons for last stage/last boss :)

seeing as how the movie is already published, no use in voting (would've voted yes anyway). i enjoyed all the abusing of bugs and extra clever use of items. just looking at the picture on the download page with megaman on a jetski below the platform made me think "what the hell???" but like others mentioned, it does kinda bother me a little the number of times megaman gets hit. one of the things i loved about the original movie was how he breezes through the stages and DECIMATES the bosses without taking a single hit. the original airman, flashman, and quickman battles with the p-shooter still amazes me even today. i am curious how many extra seconds a "no ugly hits" movie would be :/

i'm in the process of recording a movie but i forgot to put my name in the "Author's Info" section of the movie. i am familiar with hex editing so i figured i could hex my name into the file. i looked at the smv layout in the FAQ but couldn't find anything mentioning the "Author Info". i've already invested many hours into the movie and would prefer not to restart if i can avoid it. anyone know how to do this?
