It was just rapid fire punching through every fight. Punch-out has some strategy and every fight is different. This was just boring and repetitive. I could be wrong, but it didn't look like it required any particular skill to TAS this game. Voted No.

Finally we can TAS DOS games! I had actually planned to TAS this game when it became possible. This is an f-ing hard game on some roads. I have to admit, seeing SkyRoads get its ass kicked was less entertaining than I thought it would be. It wasn't painful, so I voted Yes. As I posted years ago, if this, or any DOS TAS doesn't make it, your run will have a home on my website. And yes, the music in this game was awesome. I always felt that the Xmas Edition was harder, so you might want to consider running that one.

Great job. I love how you go right to the line, having exactly as much HP and MP as you need. The Dragon Warrior runs have always been case studies in efficiency. Back in the day, I checked to see what happens if you don't save the princess, and I still can't believe that the king doesn't insist that you go and save her ass before declaring the game over. It's easy enough to do on your way home now that there isn't a green dragon guarding her!

What fruitbane said. I mean... wow. Is it possible that an entire platform is too boring to TAS?

I can't watch the whole thing. This is Guantanamo-grade torture. Wow: there's a published run of this game? I vote we unpublish it.

"Forest Maze I didn't get any Frog coin and open the equip window. I didn't get "FroggieStick". 808 frames slower.(5820)" I think you mean 808 frames saved, otherwise it should be (4204).

You've got to be kidding me. You bust your balls avoiding those ghosts while climbing 23 flights of stairs and all they say is, "Good"?

Weird timing. I was just about to do another run of this game to see if I could manipulate Waldo to be right under the cursor every time. It would be an interesting technical achievement, though still not an interesting movie. At any rate, I suspect that this run is improvable... at least in terms of length. Not in terms of entertainment. In that regard, the game is beyond help.

It's very good technically. This is a one-hit-and-you're-dead game (three lives per credit) -- unless you're in a vehicle like the Metal Slug, exosuit or airplane -- so you tend to get killed anywhere from every few minutes to every few seconds during a boss fight. (Fortunately you get a heavy machine gun every time you die.) You live a lot longer if you have a friend to play Player 2 to take out the stuff that you don't have time to notice. Bad guys are coming at you from all directions, so it's hard to watch ahead and behind. A second player lets you split the screen between yourselves. Still desyncing at about 16000 every time early in Mission 3. As far as the ROM and BIOS sizes, I'm just using what clrmamepro has created from the MAME 0.134u2 dat file. Does FBA want expect different ROMs? Edit: On the rare occasions when it makes it past 16000, it desyncs at 18000. So frustrating. Edit edit: Interesting. I switched to FBA Rerecording 0.0.2 to see if that helped. The first time through, it desunk at 34000 like it did the first time with 0.0.3c. Subsequent attempts crash at 16000 or 17400. Apparently the first run goes farther than any subsequent viewing, regardless of the emulator version. I wonder why that would be.

I'm a long-time fan of Metal Slug, so I'll have a lot to say about this run. For the record, I wasn't able to get through the movie without desyncing. I lost sync around frame 49000 the first time. If I fast forward at any point, it will desync somewhere in Mission 3. I love the fact that Marco gets fat in some missions. I had no idea that flame shot was that huge when your player is fat. What I saw was good, but... The run aims for speed, whereas Metal Slug is about how much ass you can kick. I usually prefer 1-player runs, so I hate to say this, but wouldn't this run be better with 2 players? Marco fails to kill a lot of bad guys in the name of speed, while a second player trailing him could pick up some of the guys he leaves behind. Also, Metal Slug games are very laggy: the massive number of enemies on the screen pushes the limits of what NeoGeo can handle. If a second player was killing more guys, would that reduce lag, or would the death animations cause just as much lag? Also, some of the boss/mini-boss fights take a long time and consist of Marco standing right next to them and unloading on the vehicle until it explodes, which is a bit boring. Unless adding a second player doubles the bosses' HP, that would make the more boring boss fights go by a bit faster. Metal Slug is fun to play and fun to watch. It's way more fun to play with a second player, so that bad guys are getting killed all over the screen and the massively destroyable environment is exploding -- man it's great when buildings collapse from damage. Since it's more fun to play with a second player, maybe it's also more fun to watch. Edit: Frig, now it's desyncing in Mission 3 whether I fast forward or not. I guess that was a red herring. I don't know why I got so far the first time, but I can't seem to do it again.

That was awesome! I love the pipe glitch in 5-2 -- truly a WTF moment. I also like how Mario plays with the buzzy beetle shell while he's running in 8-4. Just excellent. Easy Yes vote.

I haven't watched this yet because my collection is NES rather than Famicom, but I wonder if anyone has seen this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=We2sYmyxOPw. From first input to last input, it does indeed appear to be 14:17 as it claims. Is that guy's video faster than this run?

Anyway, yes vote. I don't find these runs very entertaining but it is an improvement in both time and style, so anything else wouldn't really make much sense :)
I agree with snorlax on this one. There are a lot of games on this site that you can "break", like the ultra fast zipping when you go off-screen in the Sonic games, or walking straight to Ganon at the beginning of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Despite pages of SMB glitches, this is the first time that the game has looked broken to me. Making where pipes lead to dependent on the screen position and, thus, making it possible to alter where a pipe leads simply by scrolling or not scrolling the screen (going to Warp Zone in 4-2, short cut in 8-4, or the very existence of the Minus World) was a significant glitch, and being able to walk through walls or prevent the flag from lowering are neat tricks, but actually wrapping Mario around the screen? To me, this is the first time that SMB has been broken. Congratulations! The game held up pretty well to intense scrutiny for almost a quarter of a century. For all its clumsy programming, bad collision detection, and endlessly abusable rules, the most played and probably most TASed game in history has finally been broken.

Big-time spoiler alert The vine glitch is awesome! It allows Mario to run way closer to the right edge of the screen than he should ever be able to, and causes an unexpected wraparound at the end of 2-1. It's even cooler in 3-1 when it also causes him to walk through the stairs. It's even cooler in 6-2 when it also causes him to walk right through a Koopa Troopa! I love the progression of awesomeness each time this glitch is used. Easy Yes vote.

Scrolling the screen without moving is indeed a pretty cool trick. I've been lurking during this frame war. I enjoy seeing the improvements to this run every year on April 1st, and I thought I should make a point about that. The objective of this run, arbitrarily handicapping Mario by not pressing B, was a fun April Fool's Day concept, but the result was entertaining enough to warrant publication (which I wholeheartedly supported). A competitive spirit and pride certainly allow humans to achieve incredible things, so there's absolutely nothing wrong with competition. But, in this run moreso than others, I hope everyone will remember to have fun. This is a speedrun with an arbitrary handicap that was accepted in the spirit of fun, so let's keep the discussion about it fun, too. Congratulations, HappyLee, on a fine video and a cool glitch.

Having attempted to play the game without this patch, I didn't appreciate just how awesome this game was. I still can't believe that Nintendo never released it. Clearly there are some significant differences between Star Fox 2 and Star Fox 64, such as the transforming (walking) Arwing and different playable characters. Since everyone has heard of this game and many are still dying to play it, Nintendo could clearly release this game for Virtual Console and get a lot of sales, not to mention that it would create a lot of buzz and bring in people who had never considered using Virtual Console before (people like me). Once they've bought one game, they would probably buy others. As for the run, awesome job!

Very nice! It's nice to see that the GB version is as weird as the NES game. That was some excellent game screwage.

Holy crap this is awesome! I love the route through Bowser 2 and Bowser 3. Getting Mario into the lava without getting hurt in Bowser 2 was a cool surprise. I enjoyed every second of this. This is the best SM64 any% run yet.
