Oh wow. Does this mean a redo? That sounds like a really significant improvement.
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. I can't watch the Act 3 WIP yet, but in the meantime, I have a question: is anything about that boss skip specific to Boss 3? It sounds like you may be able to abuse item slots on other bosses too. EDIT: I just watched the WIP. It seems good. With part 1 of stage 3, I feel like you catch some platforms at lower spots than for other platforms, but I didn't verify this for sure. The stage is just a little more boring overall. I would definitely be interested in seeing if a faster boss skip is possible... that's a pretty good WTF moment.

NitroGenesis: Not quite the same thing, but the first publication of New Super Mario Bros for the DS was noticeably suboptimal, but it got published anyway largely to put out the first DS publication and publicize the DS movies on the site. A more relevant example would be the NES Super Turrican movie by Luke, which had a major improvement suggestion by Bisqwit completely overlooked at the time. The movie was still published since it was still an improvement and because the author had gone AWOL. Alyosha is currently looking to modernize that run with the new tricks known for that game and better optimization. I would say, though, that it's more often the case that potentially good movies are killed off in the forums, and then interest dies down on improving them. For instance, the run for Legend of Toki is horribly out of date, and Diman made an improvement that was better but not good enough, but nobody's attempted a submission since Diman's movie got rejected.

Not always. The judges tend to be pretty reasonable about missing fixes that cannot be easily edited into the movie file. For example, if you fix one second's worth of work in the first few minutes of the movie, but that throws off the randomness for the rest of the game, then you can't change that early work without effectively redoing the whole movie. Usually, if the improvements are small, judges can forgive that. (See the recent Kid Dracula movie, for instance.) Now, I haven't seen this movie yet, so I don't know optimized it is. But yeah, it's not likely that 3000 rerecords is enough to really optimize a platforming game with a 40+ minute movie. Beefster, I'm glad to see this isn't your first attempt and you've already made some serious improvements to your first run, but there may still be more to go. Hopefully we can keep the criticism constructive here. Anyway, I won't be able to watch this for a little while. I'll put up some comments after I do. In the meantime, keep on TASing!

Great job! I was worried that, when I saw you were doing another movie with deaths to switch players, the deaths would interrupt the flow of the movie. This time, that was not the case. You spread out the deaths into different places, and it seems you had some surprising benefits of those deaths (like the time gain in Stage 3 part 3, or the extra bombs in the final fight). I especially like the boss improvements. The first boss is ridiculously fast now, and the final boss looks great with tons of grenades to its bottom. Yes vote, and I recommend that this obsolete the deathless run. I don't see the two runs as being different enough to need separate branches for each.

Nice fixup of Stage 1. The rolling looks more fluid. I'm glad my route suggestion worked out well; it looks slick. That boss fight is great too. With Stage 2 area 1, there's one fall where you catch a ledge on the left side, only to bounce off of it and swing down into the left side of a pit. (I don't have a good timestamp for where that occurs, sorry.) Why do you do that? Does it give you back a midair jump that you need? The bouncing in ball form seems like it slows you down a lot more in Stage 2 area 3, but I doubt there's much you can do about that. That boss fight is amazing though. Good job!

I think Coca-Cola Kid doesn't run as fast or take as much punishment as Pepsiman. As a result, I'm voting No for picking the inferior soft drink hero. (I should probably get banished for this since I live close to Atlanta, home of Coke.) Anyway, good run on a good game! The copious lag is a letdown, but it also can be encouraging for future TASers to take a shot at improvements. I mean, one part of the reason that the Sonic TASes on the site are so good is that the games have enough depth for lots of people to take cracks at them over the years, finding new surprises. Also, the Disco stages are cool, and the walljump mechanic is fun to see. In addition, there is one way this game is much better than the GG Sonic games: you can skip long score countdowns! Last comments though: That final boss is way more sparkly than Dark Queen from Battletoads. Also, is that boss actually the kid's mom? WTF?

Sorry it took a while for me to catch this run. I'd been pretty interested, since I really like the James Pond 3 run by Flip. However, when I watch this one, I am disappointed in comparison. Pond doesn't run super-quick as often (I miss seeing Pond run on walls all the time in game 3), and the music sucks. On the other hand, Pond gets to ride a bathtub in this game :-) Honestly, the game reminds me more of an imitation of Castle of Illusion. It does have some occasional fun gimmicks though. The run does get better as you keep going. There are some nifty boss fights, like that mirror match. I'll say this makes the cut for a Yes vote.

Well, I don't know enough of the game mechanics too well to comment here. But things look pretty good. If there's a way to bounce less after some falls in ball form, that looks like it would save some time. One thing that occurred to me was when you jump up platforms on the left side of stage 1-3. I was wondering if you could jump up fewer platforms and still get over to the right by rolling off, unmorphing, and jumping in midair. You currently seem like you go up more platforms than you need to.

Thanks for the responses! With that Stage 1 room, I was hoping that you could shoot Frank while still jumping towards the platform... it would save you the time for the damage animation if it worked. Not a big savings in any case.

Alright, I'm going to need a separate post for stage-by-stage comments. STAGE 1 At 1:30ish in the encode, is it possible to jump, shoot the baddie with a charged Normal shot, then switch and charge to Bat, and start flying to the platform? I think you'd have enough time to change to a bat before you fall too far, but I don't know if the lag from the Normal shot and coin makes it slower. STAGE 2 Badass job with the sunflower room. The jumping makes that room a lot smoother. The damage when fighting Jason looked unnecessary, since you beat his first phase easily before he reaches the axe. But if that damage reduces lag, then awesome. STAGE 3 Amazing job with the boss. The batarangs looked great, and I never would've suspected you could keep the chicken egg from bouncing. STAGE 4 Nothing to say here, really. Nice job jumping in the robot fight to get his arm to misdirect. STAGE 5 I always used to kill the astronaut dudes in the vertical shaft. Nice job realizing that it saves lag to keep them alive. Nice use of the damage boost for the boss. It looks ugly, but the explanation helps. STAGE 6 Nice use of the damage boost in the geyser area. I'd forgotten that the geysers were not insta-kill. Great job with the damage boost after the boss fight to minimize the lag from the little lions. STAGE 7 I never would've thought of that first use of upside-down you used. That was smart. It's a shame that you have to wait out the ceiling in the US version. Good trick with the boss to fire at point-blank range. He seems to have a very weird delay before he starts his second phase. Is there any way you can manipulate him to stay low on the ladder so that you stay point-blank and fight the second phase like the first? STAGE 8 The use of the bat in the first autoscroller is great. I never figured that out as a kid, and I'm kicking myself for it. It works perfectly with the smaller hitbox to avoid the spikes! (I died way too often in that section by hitting too many spikes on a badly-chosen route.) I see now that by transforming into a bat in the vertical strips, you lost less time than I thought. But I still think some uses of upside-down would've been better there. At least it would look cooler, and I think you may rise up quicker using upside-down instead of bat.Answered already. Nice strategies with Garamoth second phase. SUMMARY This run kicks ass. Very nice improvements! It seems like Stage 1 only has one idea left in my list, concerning that one platform with the enemy requiring bat form.[/s]

I don't have a chance to view this yet, but let me just say right away that I am thrilled to see this run on the Workbench. As my signature has said, this is one of the few games that I actually was interested in TASing myself (though I never got off my ass about learning TAS skills). Sorry I wasn't on the forum thread to discuss improvements, but I will check this over in detail later today. Just from the submission comments, though, I'm wondering why bat was used in Stage 8 by the gravity strips. Is it not possible to rely solely on the upside-down magic? That would save you transformation time if you could just use upside-down.

Good luck! I don't know enough about the game to help out much, but I could be a WIP watcher. Looking forward to it!

Not bad! It seems like a fairly easy game, since you hardly have to dodge damage and finish most stages with a lot of health. The moment where you drop through the cracked floors was funny, and the game moves at a fairly fast pace. Milo certainly doesn't run and jump like a stereotype movie wimp. Then again, the game gets pretty repetitive. The "boss fights" at the end are the most boring part. I'd say it's a Meh game overall. If there were a way to show off combat more often with the variety of weapons, that could maybe get it to Yes territory, though I figure that more weapon usage would make the game lag.

Wow... I wanted to like this game, but it just felt crappier as it went on. The music is pretty bad. The graphics are fairly bland, though the hero is hilariously manly. The lag is horrid, though the frequent killing does help with it. You look like you had a good EXP route. The bosses are done well, where it seems like you abuse hitboxes pretty well. (At first, I thought the second boss desynced since it didn't look like you actually hit him.) However, the bosses become fairly repetitive and boring as a result. I was trying to figure out, though, if the girl became the final boss at the end; I guess not. I'd say this is a good run of a fairly middling game. I'm giving it a high Meh vote.

When I checked this out, the YouTube encode was listed as Private, so I couldn't watch it. However, I could still view this movie in the emulator. It's a nice movie. I am not real familiar with Nitsuja's previous run, but it seems like you did a slightly better job with enemy manipulations too. The last ascent before the second-to-last boss seems a little better in your run. The faster boss fight at the end looks sort of ugly, though, when you hang out on the boss and take damage. (I realize it saves you time in the score countdown at the end.) I don't really understand much about determining when you can do fast bounces on the ground and when you can't. Even in Stage 1, there are some times where you run along the ground, and then there are some times when you can do a bunch of fast little bounces. Why does that happen?

Nice improvements! I personally have no problem with this run using GB mode instead of SGB, as well. I am somewhat surprised that the game had glitches this severe. It feels like it's made by the same people who did Batman Return of the Joker, and that game was much more solid.

NitroGenesis: Ok, thanks. Sarcasm is tricky to follow in these forums sometimes. Burn The Rope is a valid comparison, for sure, though a more serious post would have benefited (at least for me) for giving more detail behind how the comparison is made. That's what my post covered.

jlun2: I think Nitrogenesis is saying that the game for this thread, "Zelda DS", is the one which is not notable. Certainly, "You Have To Burn The Rope" is notable and has some good average ratings, but if we're honest here, it's a joke of a game. It's fair to say that a TAS offers little extra for that game compared to a realtime run... but anyway, that's another topic. Nitrogenesis: I see your point, but I don't agree with the idea of a "quota" or anything like that. The intention of the rules for Vault of homebrew games is to judge each game on its own merits, not to compare it to other unrelated homebrew games. I'd much rather have a few bad games show up in the list instead of missing out on a good game by discouraging submissions of cheap homebrews. I'd like to think that the community does a good enough job at keeping our standards at a good place.

Alright, thanks for the answers. Good job.
(http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) I can't usually enjoy most runs of strategy games (especially since I haven't played a lot of them), and I couldn't really follow along for longer than 5 minutes. The lack of music is part of the reason for that. Since I couldn't finish watching the movie, I won't vote. I will say, though, that it's quite impressive to do a strategy run as your first TAS, since there's a lot of luck manipulation and experimenting to do. In my opinion, it's fine by me that this submission uses the default difficulty. (For some precedent on this, check out the run history for Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones.) There could always be another submission in the future with 50 fiefs and the hardest difficulty to provide the most contrast from this run.

Nice submission comments, Sarcasmsara. (I swear I thought of that name before reading your profile page, honest). Seeing "Dash Dagger" in the comments makes me really wish for an up-to-date Drill Dozer TAS submission (though beggars can't be choosers, since I wouldn't actually make that run myself). As for the run, I admit that I couldn't recognize most of the strategy differences. However, this is an impressive amount of time improvement. Good decision to play around a bit with Kurtz and Eaglebot... it's good to have one strongly optimized Kurtz fight, and you saved it for the end when he has the most health. Nicely done. Oh, and there's no death anymore!

Personally, I thought this was pretty amusing. I like the gimmick with the mushroom bounces, although the level is still pretty bland. It does feel incomplete, like they wanted to make more levels and gave up. The boss is not interesting, but I do like the remix of Mega Man 3 music you get to hear during the fight. I'd say this game is ridiculous in an ok way. However, it's not a great homebrew for really showing off TAS tricks, it seems. (A TAS would be a lot better than a realtime run at that boss though.)

Nice! Stage 3 looks good. I wish the vertical scrolling could be that fluid, which would really make stages 2 and 4 more interesting. The spider boss fight was great. I have a few small concerns though. The faces boss of stage 3 seems a little slow... is there anything more powerful you can use on the left face when you move back to it? And on stage 5, it seems you should be able to enter the minecart on its left side to save a few frames, as well as leave it from its right side.

Thanks for the encode. This was pretty fun. Most of the time, the pace is good. There's variety and good visuals. I don't know Samurai Shodown well enough to understand the health meters, but I do like the style you showed. I admit, though, that I was confused by the behavior in the first Amakuza round (and the first round of the next fight). It seems like your character is scared of the boss and hides in the corner. If that was intended as comedy, I don't think I understood it very well. Nice effort though.
