The new version has a much better ending. Thank you! I still feel like this game should be run in a different category, though.

Definitely skip the credits after 6-8. As for the extra levels, use whatever order you want, though I suspect that it's going to be fastest to do 1-E after 1-8, 2-E after 2-8, etc. This way, you do the world-changing animation the fewest number of times, and also the movie feels nice and sequential. As for where to end after the last stage, I would suggest resetting to the title screen, with the six stars on that screen (i.e. option 3). This is the actual indicator of a 100% completion of the whole game, whereas showing the scores for one stage only shows that 1/6 of the game was 100% completed. (At least the good news about this decision is that if you feel like changing your mind about where to end the movie, it is also the easiest thing to change by replaying / hexediting.) Good luck guys! I finally saw worlds 1-1 through 1-4 and was completely blown away. Did you figure out why the red coin in 1-5 didn't want to appear at first?

I pretty much completely agree with Priam. The second-to-last move was an unnecessary time-waster. That earns a No vote, also because this is a bad category for a Columns run. Here's what I don't understand though. The submission comments reference all the previous recent runs of Columns. However, did the submitter actually read through the discussion forums for those? Time and time again, everyone has said that this is a bad category of run for Columns. So although people can improve the time of this run, it's not really worth it to do so.

You mean the MM4 debacle? You wrote MM3. For what it's worth, this looks like it's a pretty good run of the game. There seem to be a lot more enemies in this game than in Sonic 1, which makes it harder to maintain consistent speeds. The glitching in Labyrinth Zone 2 was pretty awesome, as well as a few other wall skips in other parts of the run. That being said, the game is not good. It's trying to be Sonic 1, and I have to give the developers some credit for trying to make a Genesis game for NES hardware. Unfortunately, this means that the game turns out obnoxiously slow-paced for a Sonic game (three and a half minutes to complete Labyrinth 3?! Come on!). The fact that they nerfed the spindash, making it unusable for a speedrun, really kills the entertainment too. There are two ways I could judge this. One way is by saying that because the game is essentially trying to be Sonic 1 with a Mario sprite, this game falls very short of Sonic 1 and hence should get a No vote. The other way is by saying that this is a good run of a hard bad game with some redeeming moments. I will use this second way, and you get a Meh vote.

I just saw your most recent WIP. I can't tell real well how this compares to JXQ's run, but you've done a really great job with lag. Stage 1: Looks great, especially the health management before the miniboss. The lag is a little questionable before you enter the tree, but it looks like there wasn't much you can do about it. With Wispy Woods, does he always have to drop a spike in each set of 3? Stage 2: Nice job beating Lololo as the miniboss without taking damage, and pretty decent playaround for the other two hits. I'm surprised that inhaling the bottom row of blocks in the next room is the fastest way to go. With the boss, how much control do you have over which rows they use? It seems like you spend a bit of time moving to the middle for the final hit... would it be faster to inhale the first box closer to the middle? Stage 3: I'm guessing all the damage in the water was to avoid lag... very clever! I also like the glitched enemy in the floor shortly afterward. It's a shame you had to skip the spicy food here, but honestly, you've cleaned up crazy amounts of lag. Good luck with improving the Kaboola fight! Keep it up!

You know, sure arukAdo, I'll second your nomination of SotN any%. The route change was pretty drastic. Also, I would consider the repeated enemy bouncing pretty unexpected, especially since it relies on Alucard having a low enough strength so that he doesn't kill the enemies. I'm not sure SotN any% necessarily gets my vote for this category, but it certainly deserves a nomination.

Hey NitroGenesis, why don't you create a thread in the Game Boy Games section for WIPs of this game? That way, you can get people checking your progress from time to time. I think this canceled run shows promise...

Good luck dezbeast! I'll watch WIPs too, though I may not be able to comment on much except for surface details. It's been a while since I've played around with this game.

Sure, glad you got it to work! I remember reading that tip from some strategy guide, but I can't remember which one. Truth be told, I knew about this gimmick back when you submitted the last published run, but I was still lurking then and didn't feel like registering just to share that info. I can't think of anything else to improve the run. With this new item route, would this change the best item to use with the Sphinx?

I see what MUGG is saying about optimizing, especially for boss fights. I would like to add that it seems you attack more enemies than you need to (especially in Stage 2), and each attack slows you down. It looks like you want to kill fewer basic enemies along the way. This looks like an amusing wacky game (in fact, it sort of reminds me of Trip World). I think you did a decent job, but I think this should be improved. This also brings up an important question: why can the cat fly, but the chicken can't? Is the cat actually a flying squirrel? ;-)

Hey, sorry to necromance, but I noticed something that might be useful for improving the published run. From what I remember, it is not necessary to kill the goblin with the Sword. Currently, you knock him down with the Sling, and then you stab him with the Sword. If you don't stab him, he will be back the next time you visit this screen. However, on that next visit, you've cast the Humana spell, and I think it is still in effect when you are at this screen. Thus, even though the goblin is alive, you can safely walk past him to the next room. Assuming this works, would it save time to avoid picking up / using the sword?

I like this. The game is even more on crack than the original Fantasy Zone that Hisatoki ran. It helped as well that the music was actually good this time. After you kill all the main creatures in a stage, it seems like there's still a good delay until the boss shows up. Is that because of the little baddies that also fly around in most stages? I feel like in some stages, those baddies could've been killed much sooner, especially in the first stage. However, this is still worth a Yes vote from me. Also, Derakon, I'm guessing that the extra weapons pay off more with the regular stage enemies than with the bosses. The extra weapons let him wipe out multiple enemies in sequence without stopping.

You miss a combo glitch in Round 5 on two fat guys before pulling it off on some enemies immediately following. Also, most of the big fights of Round 8 (Bear Jr., Shiva, and Mr. X) were a little disappointing, since they didn't really use 2-player strategies and just involved repeated Brain Busters.
The quickest way to defeat Shiva and Mr.X is to repeat the Atomic Drop till they die, actually I also find it boring but is the only plausible way, with any other methods it would be much slower and even more boring, the main reason is that these bosses are incompatible with normal Combos or Combo glitches. The first Boss yes, it can be done better with strenuous work (many rerecords). As for the two fat guys in stage 5, if you mean the ones appearing in the boss, there is no need to kill them, they are used to kill the boss with the combo glitch tactic.
Thanks for the response. If you say that is the best way to beat Shiva and Mr. X, then I'll believe it (though it's a shame... I would've loved to see a better Bear Jr. fight too). As for the fat guys in Stage 5, I mean two fat guys before you fight another Barbon-type enemy. These guys look like they had to be killed before you could move on. If it takes a lot of work to improve the first boss fight, it looks better if you do that work. A great TAS is not easy to make. You said that you two made this run in about a week... that actually sounds pretty fast to me. I do think it looks great, but it doesn't have quite the same polish as your previous 1-player run. I'm actually fine with a run with 2 Max characters. It is a little repetitive, but I think I was really kept amused by the sheer amount of carnage going on at once. You guys also did a pretty good job with the entertainment during points where it didn't waste time. I do think a run with two different characters shows more variety, but if it makes the fighting so much more one-sided, I would agree that it's not worth the variety.

Thanks for the informative post, spweasel! Based on what you've mentioned, I would be most in favor of just having one run. If people were really clamoring for runs involving more characters, then we would have seen more discussion on this submission by now. I think that this run is good enough to warrant an acceptance (if you set aside all issues involving multiple runs or BIOSes).

Pretty awesome! A 2p run definitely could show off more, especially with the glitches. Also, there was pretty much constant action. I thought two uses of Max was still cool, since his character is so comical. However, the quality of this run is definitely inconsistent. If I recall correctly, you guys had a slower boss fight for Round 1. On the other hand, some rounds were totally full of awesome (Round 6 definitely), and the run still looks great. Yes vote.

As has been pointed out, there is a need for a rule that allows some sort of rejection of shoddy improvements. How about a requirement that says if a run is to be rejected for "not being enough of an improvement", evidence needs to be demonstrated for how the run appears sloppy or suboptimal? For instance, with the OoT runs, the last one was rejected by pointing at Groobo's videos. The idea behind this restriction is to prevent rejections based on theories or radical route changes which have not been tested. (In many cases of sloppy runs, someone on the forum has posted a WIP and said "Look, this WIP beats your run by x seconds", thus demonstrating the sloppiness. This is the kind of thing I had in mind.) Also, if people are worried about immediate improvements to a movie that just got published, why don't we make a minimum time requirement before a movie is judged? I know it's been suggested before to have a policy where a movie should be judged no sooner than a week (maybe two) after its submission, and no later than four weeks (these numbers can be altered). The sole exceptions will be for submissions that clearly break other important rules, like plagiarizing other people's work.

In the meantime, this might be a good entry for Alden's Gruefood Delight! One thing to mention though: why another name change? We still know it's the same person when you change your name, and IMHO most forum name changes lead to unnecessary confusion / drama. Lastly, best of luck with MMX3 100%! I'm looking forward to it.

I do think Chrono Trigger would win, but I would also like to nominate FractalFusion's run of Takeshi No Chousenjou. Seriously, the last minute of that is a rain of falling sprites. Also, the glitch seriously cuts down the completion time of the game (which is something most good glitches should do). EDIT: I'd also like to add the run of Werewolf: The Last Warrior by andrewg and AnS, and Gocha's run of Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow.

I like the nominations I've seen already, with emphasis on Mega Man 2. However, I'd also like to nominate the walkathon of SMB. The whole development of that TAS is a testament to how well-planned the run is, and the camera-scrolling glitch astounded us all.

Awesome game for a speedrun. It really helped that you had the exploit to avoid draining the charge meter for thunder attacks. I'd be interested to see in the future if people find improvements based on taking less time out of the way grabbing powerups, but overall this is very good. Nice job with your first run!

I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) I'm not sure what you mean. Are you talking about the spastic lights when he is defeated?
When I watched this battle, the Madfox seemed to disappear with each of the first two hits. I recall that in a previous run, his body would make a hurt pose and keep moving. Here, however, it seems he moves less between hits. I could be mistaken though.

Looks better to me. The final boss fight was definitely amusing... does the odd flashing actually make him vulnerable sooner? The game really calls for a run with more stages though.

Very nice! This looks a lot better than the current Any% run. For one, you manage to get health powerups from some enemies, though it doesn't seem you need to be as careful with managing your health. I guess things also get a lot easier once you have the Berserker ability too... Either of your upcoming SMS ideas sound great. You've been doing awesome stuff lately, Angerfist.

Finally got to see this. Nice job minimizing lag at the end of Stage 1. I liked how you could build up momentum at the end of the tank in Stage 2. Also, the bunnyhopping was especially cool on the train stage. Good stuff!

This was AMAZING. It confused me for a little bit, since the Argentinian goalie was wearing yellow (since all the Brazilian players except the goalie also wear yellow here), but the play was downright incredible. I couldn't help but think "Run Forrest!" in any part with Brazil's goalie running out. Also, the beatdown on the Argentinian goalie (the one that ends with a double belly-slide) reminded me of Shaolin Soccer. Very good first submission, Marcokarty! Also, by the way, when I tried this on SNES9x 1.43+ v15.3, not only did it desync horribly, but ever since then, my emulator has been playing everything abnormally sped up. Any idea what's causing this? EDIT: Figured out my bug; somehow frame skip got set to "Fixed" instead of "Automatic" and this caused things to go haywire.
