Excellent list, CAD! I really like how you've spotted all these patterns and presented them in a humorous yet truthful manner.
The only thing which I think lacks reasoning, though, is "Name Change Cascade". Care to elaborate the conclusion?
Yes, here, for example. It's the most up to date DS emulator as of yet.
It's not like it's hard to find info on any of the actively developed emulators, quite the contrary. It's even easier than finding a corresponding thread and typing two lines there.
Yes, this is the animation lock I used in my SMR WIP, btw. Knowing that, I'd probably have succeeded in finding/applying it at that particular point be it my run. >_>
As much as I love 3D action games and Duke Nukem in particular, there's almost nothing to look at in this run — 2/3 of the frames are skipped due to inhuman lag and half the rest are too dark (or too red from taking hits). FPS value jumped from 30 to 4 (what the hell) and was around 8—12 all the time. This is positively intolerable.
EDIT: Though I must say that I'd gladly vote yes if there at least was no lag.
Yes, it's the same in JXQ's 100%, Teri's previous any% and the recent unassisted any% on SDA. It's just that hero's run must have been the first time m.r.bob ever seen a Super Metroid speedrun. :)
Only two times, so it's not a good example. :D There were better ones if you look closely at the most oftenly improved movies.
I myself fully approve of it, although there's a small caveat: if you accidentally discover a new generic trick or another route, or something like that applicable in the earlier part of the game, you'd likely have to start over. Many players try to avoid that either by doing and submitting almost-optimal runs in order to try an improvement later, or doing test runs. If such disrepancy hasn't been avoided in time, it compromises the quality of the whole run and the more of a perfectionist you are, the more daunting it can really be having to redo most parts of the run, especially if there's a lot of luck manipulation involved. I suppose you're aware of that, just wanted to make sure you realize that and are motivated enough to redo everything from scratch if needs be. :)
Well… you sure DO know how to impress. There are not many players here ready to show such a thoroughness and indepth knowledge even of their favorite games, and that quality is very commendable.
Of course, please take your time to do everything as you want it to. It's not anything uncommon to wait a couple of weeks/months for an excellent run. :D
I still think you're overly cautious with your run being improved. I mean, you seem to already know much more than anyone here about this game, and will certainly learn much more things in the progress. There's hardly anyone able (let alone willing) to outperform you with such an attitude.
Well, good luck to you in your endeavors. And I'm really curious if you have any specific thing about the current SMB3 run that can be improved, since it wouldn't be an easy (or even possible) task.
That would also mean removing a star from the 100% run, which uses a more conventional route, isn't much (not even twice as) longer and has more interesting moments to showcase. Although this is rather moot since JXQ is working on an improvement, so it might as well be better to give a star to any% as it's considerably more up-to-date.
Yes vote.
Venom 2nd part is a vile level, I remember struggling to have 100% on it when I was a kid, but I always got something like 98%, which pissed me off considerably. :)
Well, I can suggest an evaluation/description format.
First, we decide the best combination of plugins (all except video). I believe it's not that hard.
Next step: testing the game with that combination + various video plugins.
The format would be:
<Game name> / overall performance rank <flawless/problematic/unTASable> / video plugin #1 works <good/with problems/doesn't work>,… video plugin #n works <good/with problems/doesn't work> / other plugins work <good/with problems/don't work> / tested <fluently/extensively>.
It can be expanded if there is more than one usable input/audio/RSP plugin, and it can be integrated in a table without much effort.
True.
Also, by Saturn's request, behold: one of my failed single-segment attempts. It's rather good in the beginning but starts to get progressively worse somewhere after the morphball. :D Up to the point where I forgot the sequence of keypresses responsible for activating horizontal shinespark. Enjoy the misery.
Well, I'm not surprised to see nitsuja's name mentioned here, with this much hyperspeed offscreen action. ;)
I like this run, and especially the constant feeling that Vinnie isn't even going on track — more like being pushed between and through walls (since it's not rare to see him moving in the opposite direction in those brief moments he's on screen), although I think it's not as interesting as it could've been with camhack.
But it's a yes vote, nonetheless. :)
