Wow...finally after all this time, MR gets some attention across so many consoles. Way to go on completing this version! I'm surprised at the Atari 2600 game, it truly shows more difficulty as the game goes on. For Colecovision, it seemed to be barely noticeable from level to level. Well, 3 levels...I can imagine that they had to do something to make it clearly more challenging as it went on. I'm also jealous that you were able to find more deaths than myself and DrD2K9. One of the problems that we had, is that it took a very long time for the death cut scene to complete. Yours seems to be much faster and certainly worth the effort. Aside from the findings of Spikestuff, I think you did a really good job on optimization. As feos put it, the game has limitations and any lack of movement is clearly understandable...due to waiting for disappearing objects. Great job! Welcome aboard, and Yes vote!

Not bad, a 918 frame improvement. You know my rule on voting, and this qualifies for a Yes vote.

Absolutely! You might be interested to know that I've already updated my original attempt. The newest effort can be found here: http://tasvideos.org/3889M.html Its roughly 3 minutes and 17 seconds faster.

Interesting, I never knew there was a version for the Atari 2600. I see some glitchy moves going on here. :) Some places appear to be unoptimized, but after thinking about it...these rooms have static patterns that start the frame you enter. I take it RNG doesn't exist in this? Yes vote anyway.

After a lengthy discuss with Aran;Jaeger (EternisedDragon), I decided to create a thread for something that has confused me for a while. The question is: How do you rate the technical quality of a publication? There are many different points to bring up and ED has commented on a number of good ideas. Since I don't see any guidelines...what do you think the rules of rating should be? As for Entertainment, that pretty much goes as a personal preference, but for technical ability, I would like to rate movies with a common ground of understanding. So far, my understanding is the level of effort it took to produce...but in fact, it could be that I don't see any frames to be found (meaning a 10). So...should guidelines be created? let's discuss this and see what comes of it.

Thanks feos. The thing that DrD2K9 and I discovered, is that there is a global timer that runs the disappearing chains and floors. Because of that, the inputs are needing a shift of a certain amount of frames; however, that is still not enough...since there is input lag and sometimes a critical input fall within the lag frames that occur ever 5 (or is it 6) frames. So, entering Level 9 (on a different frame) for the second time would also have to be adjusted in order for the shift to work.

You are right dan. Even though sniq did an amazing job, I would like to add that the collaboration between the three of you (sniq, EternisedDragon/Aran Jaeger, and yourself), for routing, was also amazing. After seeing some of the early stuff about 18 months ago...I could tell that it was going to pay off in a big way. Now that it is complete, the time cut certainly shows how much effort and knowledge went into this. Great job guys.

You got that right, but at the time we used those controllers...we really didn't know any better. So, it was ignorant fun. :)

I also think it would be worth trying a "max score" run i.e. collect everything you can get to, kill all the enemies you can and find the optimum treasure room run to collect as much as you can out of it. The Colecovision version has an advantage for that type of run considering you're not under a time limit there.
I'm usually interested in any% only, but on rare occasions...I would consider others. A max score makes a bit more sense, but its not enough for me to TAS it. Would you be interested? I would be glad to share the knowledge we've learned from this game.

feos, can you please explain the timing differences between the two TASes? I discovered a few years ago why SNES time was not exact due to using frames/60hz. But even though the calculations between the 1.51 version and BH 2.3.1 show a particular time for their submission, I would have expected it to show an improvement of 21.07 seconds. I'm just curious if this is emulation differences or something else.

Ok. Then finding a way to kill him while not slowing down is the only option. Xela, there are tough situations all the time for TASers...this is just one of those that you will have to work out. Having done Phantoon poorly in a previous SM TAS, I realized that I had to bite down hard to try to resolve the tough situation. It will be extremely rewarding when you are done.

Well, I have to say that there are a lot of good things done in this TAS. 1. Clipping is used 2. Flag pole skip 3. Some places choose the harder route. 4. Seems that the best forward progress is made in tight areas where slowness can't be avoided. However, EZGames69 brings up a good point. The Bowser fights are not optimal. Which brings me to a question...Is it really necessary to kill Bowser to complete the level for this version? Looking back at RTA runners, even Happy Lee's TAS...this is not the case. Because of that...the only vote that I can fairly give, is Meh.

You can, but once out of the tunnel...you have to start your dash again, which isn't fully ready yet. The trip through the tunnel is less than 5 seconds...so I am still waiting for the full recharge. That is the reason I had to figure out the current method...which is missing the edge of the van. Now looking back on that, it isn't so hard to reproduce.

To clarify, the thought I had was at 4:38. Instead of going to the back and then dashing once you're past the tunnel, stay on the front through the tunnel. Then at 4:40, jump as soon as you're out of the tunnel and then do the frame-perfect jump to make it over the red sign with enough speed to still land on the van for the next tunnel. If memory serves, the yellow signs can be ignored, or is that just when standing on the van?
Well, I may not have explained it well enough. That area is very touch. Going back to make sure that I didn't make a mistake...I discovered the following: 1. Executing Dash, right before the Van shows up, is barely possible; however, Bonkers can't keep up before getting hit. 2. Dashing, while on the Van, can yield two results. Landing on the ground, as we have done in this TAS, and landing back on the Van. The problem with Landing on the Van is you have to have 5 seconds to recharge again for the next dash. By that point, you get knocked off by the sign. Plus, you can jump and stay on the van at non-dash speeds.

Out of curiosity, did you try that with the vans in the later level?
Well, the problem is completely different...you have to wait for 5 seconds before obtaining "Dash" capabilities again. So, once I'm the van I have to make my move quickly to miss the back of the van. So, this means I have to stay on the van until that time comes. Besides...the tunnels keep you from doing anything, plus the 2 signs will knock you off. So you have very limited space to do anything while on top. This was the reason why I tried so hard to figure out how to get off the van while keep my dash status. Good Question! This was an area that I put a lot of thought into.

Well, the original TAS was that way. The problem came from me finding enough cuts that using it caused Bonkers to have to wait for the floating platform to cycle around. So, the alternative was discovered. The part that you are referring to is 6-1, which we managed to cut 46 frames off of PartyBoy's version

The other thing I noticed is the lack of glitches. The closest thing was using the momentum from the slide in the first level to go faster, but obviously that's intended. I have to wonder if there's some way to get more dashing or something.
Well, not any game breaking glitches. BUT! there were one frame opportunities that allowed us to break the physics slightly. For example...early on, I believe 1-2...bonkers lands on a food cart. Well, the game intends for you to loose your forward momentum when you jump again. I discovered that jumping off of the cart the frame you land...you can hold your forward momentum. This helped out with landing on the table faster. If you don't execute the one frame jump at the right time...you would have to stay on the car long enough to make a jump reach that far. Staying on too long would cause Bonkers to crash and thus waste even more time recovering...due to his animation.

Actually, you could have stayed on the truck/van, but there were a number of things that had to be considered: 1. At the beginning part (where the vehicle first appears), you would have either had to start your dash or jump on the vehicle. 2. Starting your dash at the beginning part would have been futile, since the vehicle would have eventually caught up and you would have had to jump on top. Jumping while running would not have worked either, because bonkers would have landed on the front of the car and get take out of dashing speed. 3. Taking advantage of riding the vehicle to an open space, after the first tunnel, gave Bonkers just enough space to run forward and barely miss the back of the vehicle. This was not done in the previous TAS. 4. After accomplishing #3, following the van kept a second vehiclefrom re-spawning and causing massive lag in the second tunnel...where the previous TAS was trying to stay ahead of. 5. Staying on the vehicle at the very beginning...you would have gotten pushed off by a sign anyway. So you loose your advantage. I was able to find an opportunity to keep my dash speed up longer because of the points made above.
I recently discovered that if you haven't reached a level of frustration with TASing any game, then you haven't done your due diligence. ---- SOYZA: Are you playing a game? NYMX: I'm not playing a game, I'm TASing. SOYZA: Oh...so its not a game...Its for real? ---- Anybody got a Quantum computer I can borrow for 20 minutes? Nevermind...eien's 64 core machine will do. :) ---- BOTing will be the end of all games. --NYMX
