when I was watching the Duke Nukem run, this game sprang back to my mind. Jazz Jackrabbit was awesome back in the day (only the first one with the expansion packs - the other two weren't as good IMHO). Let's hope the emulation will improve so somebody can run it. I'd LOVE to see this :-)

Incidently... "THE HIDDEN WORLDS" TRICK LIVES ON MWAHAHAHAH!! As for the issue of calling it a "glitched" run, it is indeed glitched because...well... Have you SEEN the video? The graphics screw up hugely! Plus, there's a number of thinks you're totally not supposed to do, such as hop OVER Mother Brain's chamber or destroy the final walls and whatnot with the default weapon. I guess basically, you could call ANY run where you do something you can't do without tool-assistence "glitched"... Hm... I can see where the debate lies now. "What IS 'glitched'?"
the problem is that every single currently published SM run is technically glitched. The mockball is based on a glitch, the shoulder pumping is, all the runs are full of glitches. So to categorize this run here into its own category, we would have to define varying categories of glitches. Or varying severity. Personally, I'm very indifferent. For one, the currently published runs are clearly *different* from this run, but all of them are "glitched", so from a logical and technical standpoint, this one should be replacing the older (non-100%) ones. So my feeling is to keep the run separate, but my rationality demands otherwise. *sigh* Philip

that reminds me of that port of the sonic games to XBox Live. They praise the port to be of "HD resolution".... agreed... the picture frame around the blurry scaled image looks sharp and nice... crazy idea to call that HD. Then again, if it's 1920x1080, then it probably must be HD *sigh* Philip

Then I have no idea why there's a difference in naming.
If I was to guess, I'd say it's because of Fusion's "special" handling of items and progression. A Fusion minimalist run is indeed counted as 0% by the game, but even then Samus has killed all bosses and collected all items but the missile and energy upgrades. The game doesn't allow for any sequence breaking to happen and doesn't even count anything but missile, bomb and energy upgrades found when calculating the completition percentage. While it's impossible to complete Super Metroid with a 0% score, it's possible to do that in Fusion. So I guess that's where the perceived inconsistency comes from. Philip

.... and another masterpiece of comedian JXQ - I'm sorry, but you'll ever bear this title in my mind as I just won't be able to ever forget that audio commentary on the OoT run. Anyways. Thanks for not using the beam glitch on the last boss. I hate to see the game totally glitch out at the end - especially after such a masterpiece. Thanks for this run. I loved it. Philip

Hi, thinking of this, I'd say that making a kind of a documentary video would make a lot of sense. I don't think it will be as popular as all the end results, but if someone bitches about cheating or just doesn't get the concept, you could refer them to the video. And even for us people that see the art behind the clips - and the incredible amount of work, patience and dedication put behind them, it would be interesting to see the story behind the clips. Making a TAS is interesting on so many levels that I still get excited when I'm telling people about this new kind of art. Even my dad who has never played video games for longer than about 10 minutes when I was little understood the concept that TAS videos are a piece of art. Of course he didn't understand the art at first, but after I've shown him a movie or two and explained him how much work had to be put into creating this, he began to understand (this was during a lunch break when he asked me what I was doing in my spare time) We really should educate people on this. I'm doing my part in the real world, now please, somebody with more sense of creativity than what I have, go ahead and produce that clip! Philip

pilif is my real first name reversed after normalizing it somewhat... Philip -> filip -> pilif Some guy in school gave it to me years back to mock me, but I kind of liked it which made it stick. Even now when I'm in an age where I don't think nick names are something cool any more, I'm using pilif in all online communities I'm participating in. It's easily typed and hardly ever used by anybody else but myself. Philip

Hello, I voted yes. But not to replace anything that's currently on the site. Add this as a concept video and link it from the normal SMB runs as it's more like these glitched Zelda runs than a real improvement over the current runs (it's faster, but it's not the real ending you achive even though the game may "think" otherwise. I agree. Every TAS is a piece of art in its own regard. But this run just brought "art" to the next level. Beautiful. And shocking (that death came completely unexpected and felt like a desync for sure). Brilliant. A piece of art. Philip

Hi there, I've just watched through the posted run and I want to express my congratulations for this. Maybe it's because I have some really strong emotional bonds to this game, but the Zelda DX run IMHO is the run that was most fun for me to watch. It's impressive how little link seriously owns screen by screen full of monsters, seeminly unaffected by physics and game mechanics. This is the one run I'm going to rewatch and rewatch again for sure :-) Thanks! Philip

Depends on what features interest you I suppose. As far as just emulation goes, I believe ZSNES (SNES) and Kega Fusion (Genesis and more) are better.
ZSNES feels WAY better for playing IMHO. Emulation is more smooth, sound feels kinda better and there are many more graphics filters the user can chose from. Too bad it still does not accuratlely support rerecording. Philip

Hi, I myself had wonderful experiences with pSX emulator: The think works (mostly) flawlessly and it's really fast. Playing a game (I tried the whole bunch of Squaresoft RPGs) was quite like playing them on the original console. No fiddling with strange plugin settings, no graphic glitches, no stuttering sound: It just works. Rerecording (and linux support for you encoding guys) would be the greatest thing to have on this emulator. Philip

Furthermore, it shows that there are reasons for using a Japanese version. It's up to the author to decide whether they're more important than being able to see what's going on.
I completely agree with you and I'm glad to have an english CT-run on the site. I just remember being pissed back then because the run was made in the japanese version for seemingly moot points (remember: I DO agree with you). But I accepted those arguments back then and now I'm just voicing my concerns that publishing this english run would be against the outcome of a discussion held last year. Call me pedantic ;-) Philip

I think you might be confused with the rule that says no hacked games are allowed. This effectively reduces the submissions to ones that haven't been fan translated. There's not a rule that says English runs can't be published, however.
the first mention of the japanese text renderer being faster is here: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=16142#16142 read on for more discussion about that ;-) Philip

Hello, I've not been around much lately, but thanks to the RSS feed I'm certainly up-to-date concerning the submissions here. Now, if I remember correctly, there was this unspoken policy that CT must be run in the Japanese version because its text rendering is noticably faster than the US version. While I'm very happy to see a run being done in a language I actually understand (it's a shame I don't understand Japanese), I'm not convinced that this movie can actually be published. At least not until someone tells me why that rule of old seemingly does not apply any more. Not voting just yet - though the run is impressive. Philip

It's the only way I found to entertain you in this kind of game: If I never crash and follow the path at full speed, I will never be able to attack the others (except by the back), it would be borring to watch because we would see only the player following his way and be the 1st in the whole movie. I managed to crash to prevent that.
exactly my thinking. Seeing you get screwed all over the place - partially in ways impossible to achieve without slowdown/rerecord and then shooting one or two impossibly well-targeted green shells at seemingly random places just to hit all those suckers via countless bounces on the wall is just priceless to watch - at least when you have played the game as much as I did. Some bumps/crashes seem sloppy though. In that track where it's evening and getting night over the laps - with the indians on the track, you once bump into a rock. That was IMHO completely avoidable and had no influence what so ever on the race. Another one is the fall in the first (or was it the second) ghose house track. Why fall after those speedups? There must be more original ways of getting your ass kicked. I recommend trying not to fall off the track as Lakitu pulling you out is very boring and disturbing in the flow of the movie. I'm sure there must be other ways for getting behind. Maybe race one lap backwards, then catch up? I stand by my 'meh' vote: Good concept, good playing, entertaining, but not really for this site as it's nowere near a TA. Still: It shoudl be published - maybe once you clean out those fluency problems I was pointing out - unless of course you can explain those. Philip

Hi, this really is very, very entertaining to watch. Actually seeing how you do in the third race of the first tournamet made me come here and post this. I'm not sure of whether it should be published or not tough. This site centers on perfect and flawless runs. While yours is technically flawless (very, very good (un)luck manipulation), the fluency of the movie certainly is not perfect (which as you said would be boring). Personally - listening to my gut - I'd say publish and star it. Looking from the perspective of this site, I'd say: Don't publish as you are doing obvious mistakes (all on purpose, but none the less)... I voted meh, but my subconscience still thinks this should be published. Philip

Hi, who was the one to point out snes games having few glitches? While they may not have an effect as devastating as on the NES games, they prove to be interesting none the less. Congratulations! Very, very well done. Now ifonly someone could tell me what exactly happened with those mushrooms in the last phase of the browser fight... WOW! Philip

Hi does not desync here - at least not withing the first 10 minutes of the movies (as this is as far as I've watched so far). Seems very well played to me. I like how Zero does take no hits, though this may be inefficient speed-wise. /me runs off to watch the rest now... Philip

having finaly been able to watch the last movie, unfortunatly i have to vote no. not only did i find the run very hard to sit though, it just did'nt have that "awesome game" feel to it. i almost fell asleep during the run actualy. its just a bad game IMO. however the run was really well done and executed. sorry.
for me it was quite the contrary: I loved to watch this run. Maybe this is because I knew the game (and actually tried to play it, but failed misearbly somehwere around lv23). I especially liked all those "little things". Just look at the "Day of the tentacle"-level. I'm a real fan of the game this level is a hommage to. Additionally, this is one of the very few games that pass the "pilifs-girlfriend"-test: She watched through the whole thing and could not stop enjoying it. So: Big YES from me. And, please, Walker Boh, do a "Ghoul Patrol" run too! Philip

you are supposed to slow down to a bit more than normal speed when in ball-form. Mockball is what allows you to get the super missiles earlier in Kraid, saving you from doing that spore-boss Philip

Hi, I'd nominate the Zelda 2 glitched run. It came out of nowhere and did use tricks I did not know even the slightest thing about. Philip

Hi, I'm a bit undecided: Zelda is the obvious candidate, but take a look at Super Metroid as well. Things like the Murder Beam and the Mockball are cleanly glitches that can be used. And while it does not so spectacularely shorten the movies time, it is very interesting to see the glitches especially when one had played the game back in the time. So I'd like to nominate Super Metroid aswell. Philip

what are the advantages of this over an avi of same quality that uses less bandwidth? because this is essentially an avi movie in a swf. what codec was used? sorenson? edit: now i think it was just a sequence of gifs
it was done using Camtasia Studio, AFAIK. The big advantage is that it starts immediately. AVIs usually are not streamable so you have to download the whole thing before you can watch it. Philip
