About the game

Final Fantasy Legend II, originally released in Japan as Sa・Ga2: Hihō Densetsu, is a role-playing video game developed by Square Co. for the Game Boy handheld console as the second game of their SaGa series. Initially released in December 1990 for Japanese audiences, the game was translated and released in North America in November 1991 by Square America Co, and again in 1998 by Sunsoft. Like its predecessor, the English version was re-branded as a Final Fantasy title due to the series' popularity in the Western world. The game's development was headed by lead designer Akitoshi Kawazu, who had worked on the previous title, with a music staff consisting of Kenji Ito and Nobuo Uematsu. In 2009, an enhanced remake of the game was announced for the Nintendo DS titled SaGa 2 Hihō Densetsu: Goddess of Destiny, featuring three-dimensional graphics, new story elements, and an arranged soundtrack.
The game is set in a fantasy world where the player assumes the role of one of eight different characters of varying race and gender who leaves on a journey to find their lost father and discover the secret of "Magi", a substance created by the gods that holds powerful magic. Final Fantasy Legend II was largely well-received worldwide during its original release, with readers of Japanese magazine Famitsu voting it the 94th greatest game of all time in a 2006 poll.

About the glitch

  • The Trash Can Bug
If you use the trash can several times when the total of Magg is 29, the total of MAGI becomes 255.
As a result, you come to be able to open all doors.
Details are here.
  • The Dragon Race Bug
If you use the teleport while the dragon race, you can take out the dragon to the outside.
When riding on the dragon, you can pass various obstacles.
Details are here.
  • The Poison Bug
When the total of the ally and the enemy is 16 and someone dies with poison under a specific condition, the most significant bit of 8 bits data becomes 0, and equipment, the ability, and the character change.
In this run, the monster is transformed to a black cat and the equipment of the Mech is changed by using the poison bug.
Details are here.
  • The Counter Bug (JPN v1.0 only)))
The counter of the monster ability can be removed.
The counter sells for 272823 kero each.
In this running, I sell the counter, buy the frame sword, equip mech with it, and improve the power of mech.
This bug doesn't exist in (U) version.

Flygon: Added right video this time.

mmbossman: Are these glitches possible on the (U) version, or are they (J) specific? Setting to "Needs more info" until this question is answered. Viewer response has been positive, and it appears there are unique advantages to using the (J) ROM, so I'm accepting this for publication.

Looks good. It would be nice to know a little more about the glitches used here. Yes vote.

Link to video I didn't really catch anything that was happening in this movie, apart from the fact that the character seemed to be wearing various fursuits turning into different animals and monsters. And that this TAS appeared to be quite optimized, the random encounters were really boring, however. The movie wasn't really, as a whole, that entertaining, but for the sake of the fact that the TAS appears to be pretty optimized, a weak Yes vote.

Considering some effort I went through, I have a pretty good idea on what's happening, even with the language barrier. Most of the run seems to be trying to get enough MAGI to use the Trash Can Glitch. The Dragon Race Warp is quite familiar to me as well. What's not so familiar is the fact the one monster transforms into powerful things early on, or the strange inventory of the robots. The early teleport is nice, too. What I want to know is what is unique in JPN that isn't in USA. Let us know of these glitches when there is time.

Saves were most likely for luck manipulation purposes. The Random number generator is a fixed table, that repeats. Normally you can't get teleport this early in the game. IN this case, he seems to have plenty of teleport Items, and uses them to save time. Once you have gotten at least a certain number of MAGI, it is possible to use the trashcan glitch to manipulate the MAGI counter, and as a result ALL MAGI doors open. Once that happens, he skips over to the dragon racing world. The glitch there, is using a teleport once you have the fastest dragon, which then essentially enables a walk-through-walls code. From there, he skips to the final boss, and pwns that boss.

Although this was entertaining and clobbers one of the better Game Boy games, I worry about the Japanese ROM version preventing an English publication in the future. Not just because of text speed or a new trick, but I think this run might demotivate FatRatKnight or others... and I was really excited to see a TAS with the dragon warp trick. I think this should be published but I would strongly have preferred it in English. I still hope to see that one day.

I have a bad habit of abandoning projects. I have started on 3 other runs that I never finished, and the two GB ones I picked looks like they may end up numbers 4 and 5 on my list, regardless of the result here. Even if the submission never existed, there was still a high risk of that happening with me. As it may be, I'm still waiting on knowing what glitches work only on the JPN version.

Abusing glitches only of JPN rom.
Before this can be accepted for publication, I'm going to need this section to be elaborated on. U version is preferred over JPN unless there's a good reason. What's the reason?

I enjoy the game but I find the constant saving to avoid random battles too tedious. Voted no.

I'll just bump this for the sake of reiterating: We need some more information regarding this run and the SaGa 3 submission. I'm going to send a PM to the author to see if we can't get this resolved.

The submission text is updated. It has more information than the ambiguous "uses JPN-exclusive glitches". Is this good enough or do you need a TASer who knows the game to give further thoughts?

In this game, the constant saving is indispensable. The purpose of reset is not just to avoid battles but to adjust random numbers, too.

Looks to me like he used the character-change glitch to get to level A monsters, then ate meats until having a Giant, which gets Teleport, rather than using Doors.
