Super Metroid MockingBird Tool-Asissted Speed-run by Hoandizi
This is a nice hack made by Xaggoth!
About this hack:
- I decide to run with lowest items as possible, so refill them is very important! The hack itself also foces player to take a long way to collect items!
- No Mother Brain in this hack, and Phantoon is the final boss!
- An interesting thing in this hack is: if you want to open a grey door, you have to shot a Blue/Red/or Green door in other room! But it's very difficult to know exactly what door to shot, experienced players of this hack might know!
- Power Bomb is nowhere to find in this hack, and of course you can't open Yellow door!
I can brief the run as follows:
- Missile, Morphing Ball and Bomb are the first!
- Wave Beam is used to open a Blue gate to get Grappling Beam, but you can use Missile instead!
- Grappling Beam is the must to get Hi-Jump Boots, and you can only reach the room of Super Missile with this boots! - Now it's time to fight Crocomire for Varia Suit!
- After acquired Varia Suit, you can enter Norfair, fight Golden Torizo for Speed Booster!
- There is a room with 3 Grey doors which have to shot 3 different doors in 3 different rooms! And you have to pass this room to reach to Phantoon! The 1st door to shot (Red door) is after Crocomire's room, which requires Speed Booster (ONLY Speed Booster is needed under TAS condition) (in realtime you have to get Spring Ball and Speed Booster)! The 2nd door to shot (Green door) is the big room on the way to Ridley! I used some tricks to shot the Green door without opening the Grey door (which required Ridley to be killed)! The last door to shot (Red door) is in Botwoom's room! After that, there's only Phantoon left!
- Phantoon can't be vulnerable except Bomb, and it takes 3 round to finish him! (1 round I did not make his eye opens immediately to refill Energy, cuz he does much damage to Samus!)
- Finished time: 00:19:25.32
- Frame count: 111625
- Re-record count: 14536
- %items collected: 12%
Another things of this hack:
- Fight Spore Spawn for X-ray Scope
- Fight Ridley for Screw Attack
- Spring Ball and Speed Booster are needed for Plasma Beam
- Need either Plasma Beam or Screw Attack for Gravity Suit
Thanks for watching! : )

mmbossman: While I'm in no particular hurry to have a Super Metroid hack published, enough people seem to find this one entertaining to warrant acceptance. However, both Nach and I were less than impressed with the overall level design and "polish" of the hack, so I would suggest that a future run of a more impressive hack should probably obsolete this run. Anyway, congrats to the author for the first accepted Super Metroid hack on TASvideos
GabCM: Encoding in SD and HQx. It will take some time before I publish it.

Is there a way to get an .ips patch for this hack? I found the original forum on Metroid2002, but I don't have an account there and didn't see any download links.
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. The Hack I've played through Mockingbird before. It has a nasty habit of hiding items so well, you're bound to get stuck at some point. But that's not a problem for a TAS. The intended item route has a lot of unavoidable backtracking, which is a problem for a TAS (as seen in this run). But despite all the problems, Mockingbird has very varied, interesting and challenging room designs, which make the hack worth playing and a TAS worth watching. The TAS It is obvious that this is technically very well done. The author did a great job applying all the known techniques in clever and unexpected ways, completely breaking some of the rooms. Some of the tricks used cannot be seen in our TASes of the original game. I'm not familiar enough with the hack to comment on the route, but I know that the intended item order was severly bent to reduce the amount of backtracking to a more sensible amount. It's still a lot, but thankfully not as much as it could have been. Do we need another super metroid hack? Probably not. But this run was very well done and managed to show off a lot of tricks, so I'm voting yes.

I ended up watching the YouTube playlist: thanks to Hoandjzj and Critical Five for that. I think Tub's description of the hack and play are quite spot-on. I rather liked seeing the game unfold as more and more abilities were earned. It would've been cool to have more boss fights though... the one at the end was quite awesome. The only concern I have is whether there should have been more damage boosts earlier. For instance, the first time you meet yellow pirates, you have to spend a lot of time to dodge their attacks. However, it seems you have enough health to spare at that point where you can damage-boost off of one of the pirates and refill energy later when you're filling up on ammo anyway. This one concern aside, I am in favor of publishing this as TASVideo's first movie of a Super Metroid hack.

The yellow pirate does 200 damage so Samus will die instantly if touched, and the next Energy refill cannot be accessible, so I have to avoid those pirates ^^! The health of yellow pirate is 900 so I can use Missile and Super Missile to kill, but there will be a trouble with the battle with Crocomire! Thanks for your vote ^^

had this .ips lying around. Didn't re-check, but it's likely the one I used; the TAS sync'ed for me. http://www.authmann.de/misc/MockingBirdStationV7.zip

At first, I thought the idea of shooting the colored doors to open grey doors in other areas would be a bad idea, but it made the hack feel more puzzle-like, which turned out to be pretty cool. Hoandjzj, I know you to make good Super Metroid hack TAS' and this one doesn't disappoint. Yes vote.

I've played through this hack. It's hard. And I did find its tendency to put the next powerup on the opposite end of the map to be a bit aggravating. That said, I enjoyed watching this TAS. Here's a few of my notes while watching: * Check out that Torizo (bomb guardian) room! Fighting him normally is just asking for the conveyor belt to take you into the spikes for 60 damage a pop. * That section in the first video right after using a missile to go the wrong way through a blue shutter gate isn't quite as evil as it looks. Most of the jumps are intended to be made in morphball form. Doing it "normally" is an exercise in masochism. :) * Right after taking an elevator down (into the area with the Wrecked Ship music), you kill two enemies with the grapple beam. This resets your falling speed. Would it be possible to kill either with the normal beam and avoid slowing down? * I always hated that room with the rising lava and pillars with gaps you have to jump through. Nice to see it so smoothly navigated. * Naturally, having the hi-jump boots early makes the underwater segment a lot faster. :) Precision underwater jumping..grrr... (you're supposed to go underwater => wavebeam => backtrack to grapple beam => rebacktrack to hi-jump boots => underwater for supers, to give you an idea of how much back-and-forth this hack normally has) * The watery maze room with the Rinkas is hot, so Samus will take damage continuously if she doesn't have the Varia. Thus the detour to pick it up from Crocomire. * You're supposed to have Spring Ball and Gravity Suit for Phantoon. And a lot more energy tanks. I also fought him with just Varia when I played the hack, and he's a spiteful little thing. Deals way too much damage. Anyway, nice work! I enjoyed it. I just don't know if the publishers will think there's enough room for yet another Super Metroid TAS on the site...

I'm gonna give this a yes. It feels like the place is a maze, which is a good thing in a Metroid game, and even with all the backtracking it is still good to watch.

Does the IPS patch to a (J) or a (U) ROM?

Unless I missed something, we don't have a published Super Metroid hack yet. I know Metroid Legacy had permission back when permission was required, and there was a submitted run by catnap222, but he canceled it.

It takes 2 shots to kill that enemy, so using Grapple beam makes it faster and better manipulate luck! Yes the falling speed is a matter, but the waiting-time for item drop is a bit longer! ^^

I don't see why we have to have only 1 Super Metroid hack. They go into their own section anyways, so it's not like they're cluttering up the main site. I think we should accept any SM hack, provided it makes for an entertaining run. And speaking of which, this was a pretty good watch. There seemed to be an excessive amount of backtracking, which was a bit off-putting, but I presume that's the hack's fault.

I enjoyed this one. I think length-wise it was just right, and the hack itself looked good. Yes vote on both the hack and the run.

A TAS of a hack has to be quality in two areas: The run, and the hack. This is clearly a well-done TAS, but to a casual viewer, the hack wasn't great. It wasn't bad by any means either, but I was put-off by the constant back-tracking and the somewhat amateurish looking room set-up. I'd like to see if a few more people have comments on this run before making any sort of decision on it. EDIT: Overall, I give it a meh

An HQx encode + the official SD encode will come up soon! EDIT: It's delayed, because of encoding problems.

So I finally got around to watching this. It was nice to see a different Metroid game for a change. However, I found this game to be rather bland. There was nothing about it that really left me wanting to see it completed. No intro or scenes to give me an idea what the objective is. All I see is the need to blow up some doors here and there. Then the variety within the game isn't too great either. The frequency at which the same rooms are entered over and over again in close proximity is rather high. *Nach yawns profusely.

Amazing hack, but it looks like it'd be really difficult, which is a shame because it looks so nice and is so well done. Video games should be fun. I don't want to play a game only to be frustrated over and over again.
