Asterix in 06:04.05 by nitrogenesis
Julius Caeser has snatched Obelix and is about to feed him to lions! But before anyone can barely even blink, Asterix comes, kicks Julius' ass, and Obelix is saved. This is a 509 frame improvement over TimmyAkmed's last movie, which means it is an estimated 10-second improvement.
  • Used FCEUX 2.1.4a
  • Plays on Hard
  • Takes damage to save time
  • Manipulates Luck
Okay, I started this run when I saw Timmeh's run. It was a reasonable game choice. However it was done poorly. (not too poor for a first submission, but unacceptable nonetheless) So I started a little run of it. I never intended to finish it, but when the improvements got bigger, I decided to continue.
The main things you would need to look out for in this game are lag, and invincibility potions and/or stars. Lag is strange in this game. Jump from the wrong place, oops, added 7 more lag frames. Jump from another place, no lag at all. Weird, huh? I never really did figure out why this happened.
Now about the invincibility things. Grabbing a potion makes you invincible, but it has a little animation of Asterix getting high when you grab it and so is avoided whenever possible. Meanwhile, the stars. These make you invincible and don't have any animation. Giant time-savers can be made using these stars, so I grab them lots.
Another quirk about this game is that it's possible to jump at the walls on top of the screen. This can be done in 3-2 and 3-3 of the pyramid levels. In 3-2 most of the level is skipped, but in 3-3 the entire level is skipped. They are both a matter of timing.

Big improvements

  • Taking damage to save time! Yeah, this may be unfair, but it means I don't have to slow down all the time to avoid an enemy.
  • Some optimization and shortcuts.
  • The fight against Julius was done faster because I found a way to hit him earlier then usual.
  • Less PAF!-ing enemies and more manipulation.
  • Controlling Asterix's speed better
  • and last but not least, less breaking blocks.

Thanks to:

Randil, for his testrun of the first two levels, demonstrating more optimal play.
TimmyAkmed, for his run.
DarkKobold, for looking into my run and analyzing it.
and not really anybody else. The run wasn't really noticed by anyone.

Enjoy and comment with questions, too! I'll try to answer them all!
:)

Flygon: Corrected the YT module aspect. Grunt fixed it.

DarkKobold Good feedback, and a well done movie. I really enjoyed the ceiling parts, and skipping some of the 'auto-scroller' trains. The few minor known improvements aren't enough to stop this from being publish-worthy.
Also, the music for the "invincibility" is one of the worst in video game history. Just try and get it out of your head.

Flygon: I aint a publisher, so this isn't a publication message.
Replaced mmarks YouTube module with one that doesn't cut off the ending.

GabCM: Flygon's giving me the stuff needed for publication.

I don't have anything to say, but nitrogenesis got so happy about that someone posted in his topic.

I actually did watch it since it was only six minutes. Game had pretty nifty music.

It's a simple TAS of a simple game, but nice enough for a yes vote for me.

The movie looks pretty nice and is short enough not to get boring. The lag looks pretty iffy in some places, but I guess it's as optimized as you can get it. Yes vote.

I'm unsure about how heal management is optimal, but still good.

The only complain I have is about the game in itself (it's not to interesting a game) but other then that it's a Yes vote from me IF you answer the following: The only thing, did you have to enter the Key-level in 4-2 or could it have been avoided? From my perspective it seemed avoidable but I may be mistaken.

I actually needed to get into because it makes the minecart which is running slowly behind me appear instanstly. Also, mmarks, there's not an S in my username (you can see this on the Archive page and on the YouTube title.) fix it please

Pretty nice. The improvements are clear, and the damage-taking made this more interesting. Yes vote. By the way, the submission text should say you skipped 3-2 and 3-3, right? It currently says 4-2 and 4-3.
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. From the submission comments:
Shoutouts and thanks to mklip2001 for arguably being the nicest and most supportive person on the forums.

Voted Yes. Maybe the lag in the last level could be reduced by killing some enemies, but I'm not sure if that would be faster. Thanks for this run, it makes this game look a lot easier than it did when I played it as a kid!

There's so much lag in the last level that it's just better to let it hamper you. Killing enemies wastes 10 frames.

Looks optimized. I liked the stylistic choises. Some minor things I noticed: *3-3: You can enter the door 2 frames faster, as shown here. *4-1: You forgot to speed boost from the platform around frame 13000. This would save a few frames. These are very minor details (that might be edited in, I don't know), and won't stop me from voting yes on this.

Randil, I noticed both of those. They were both caused by me loading the wrong savestates. Here's another minor improvement - in 4-2's Key level I couldve simply jumped into the pit instead of collecting the key. It wouldve saved 14 frames but messes up the lag in the level.

Seems a straightforward-enough game. Very straightforward, in fact. My only major complaint is why didn't Obelix just walk out of there? It's not like there's a force in the world that could keep him prisoner...

Derakon, maybe there is an invisible wall. Obelix should be used to it, seeing how there are many in Asterix & Obelix for GBC ;) And 2 people voted meh. Who and why? Just curious because I hate silent voters -_-

Due to the YouTube encode cutting off the ending early, I am reencoding this in HD myself. I'll investigate the SD encodes as well, but I suspect that they probably used the same source AVI. Yes voted, I loved Asterix comics when I was a child, and the TAS aint too bad either.

Walk to the right. Bleh. Still voting yes.
