Me? I just tried it today in a store (it's not out in NA yet). The 3D works absolutely. That "sweet spot" is so easy to find out, I didn't try to aim for it, it just worked instantly. I also played at maximum 3D, without feeling bad at all. The game I played was Rayman 3D (which is Rayman 2). The 3D depth is present and works, and that freaking purple mosquito that follows your ass at the beginning was popping out of the screen, but it focuses mainly on the depth (like probably almost every game). Too bad the cutscenes weren't in 3D thought, only the gameplay is.
And the augmented reality works as well! We were trying it on a glass table. Someone shot a dragon lying on that glass table. I mean, it works and it's fun! I think more games will use that AR technology.
I definately want a 3DS... for less than 250$. I mean, it's expensive, for something that can last up to 5 hours a charge (but I could deal with a PSP that lived 4 hours/charge so whatever). I'll try to get one for 200$ or less on eBay, if it's possible.

Not the least interested.
A) The latest portable console was the Game Boy Advance SP. Small, lightweight, uncomplicated, but easy enough to play while riding the bus, walking or standing in the line to the cinemas. The battery lived for approximately two eternities, and there was quite a great possibility to play games with one hand (I know, I spent a week in hospital with only one working arm, and I played the GBA over the DS), due to some games not trying to be gimmicky and, as previously mentioned, the console not being large as a fridge. This 3D-thing will most likely only allow you to play at home, or in a friend's basement, which pretty much kills the concept of it being a portable console in the first place.
B) Let's, for the sake of the argument, say that it isn't a portable console. In that case, we're down to a clunky piece of hardware, costing more than any of the other home consoles, but this piece of machinery does not really allow for you to invite friends over and play, as you can with the other leading home consoles.
C) This is sort of a first-gen console (not really I suppose, but close enough), and as always, people buying the first-gen of a console gets fucked. Exceptions being the older consoles which pretty much only were one generation.
D) The first battery time annonuced, and the drain/recharge-rate which was mentioned in the same sentence, better be a sick joke.
So no. The only game remotely interesting would be Resident Evil Mercenaries. But wait! I already own Resident Evil 4. Nintendo re-using a game for the nth time? NO WAI!
Ok so I'll be hated for this. So be it.

You do realize that the DS will be succeeded by the 3DS in the near future, right? I give the DS 3 years until it's completely phased out.
I do believe I know how the video game industry works, yes. And it sounds reasonable. If it's not a massive fiasco (Which it won't be, for reasons I will not comment on), the DS will most likely die within a few years yes. But to get one on release sounds extremely stupid in my opinion, due to reasons I've stated. It's a hybrid of a portable and non-portable console, but not in the "We get the good from both types!", but the other way around I'm afraid.

The point of a portable console is to be able to bring it with us with ease. Right? I'm sure you can do that with the 3DS.

For the GBA, we got Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Advance SP and Game Boy Micro. Between these machines, only the form factor is changed (+ backlight since SP). All the games worked on each platform, so nobody was really fucked.
For the DS, we got Nintendo DS, Nintendo DS Lite, Nintendo DSi and Nintendo DSi XL. I know it's pretty much stupid to rerelease the DS 4 times, but let's face it. The only differences between the Lite and the "Tank" are the screen size and the smaller form factor. [irony]Those who got the "Tank" definately got fucked[/irony]. And then the Nintendo DSi. It only added two of the worst cameras in history of handheld devices (the 3DS got the same kind of cameras, for shame). Also, it could play AAC music, while most people listen to MP3s. The only interesting feature was the DSiWare, where you could download apps and games. Otherwise, I didn't care of the DSi. Then, the DSi XL, nothing but a larger DSi, and it's released too late (like the GB Micro). All the DS games are compatible with all these DS systems. And the battery life didn't get better between them. I got a DS "Tank", and I'll never regret it.

No. Into a glorified PSP.

Flygon is right. The 3DS is not "another DS model", but rather "the DS's successor".

Sure, I agree. But I do not classify it as a portable console, since it will not be easy to play a game "with ease" while riding the bus or whatnot. My issue here is that it sounds like it is virtually unplayable unless you are indoors and not moving. Which I do not really like. For a console to be portable for me, I want to be able to play it on the move. As of now, it's either the GBASP or robbing someone of their android phone so I can kill pigs using birds. The PSP is close to useless while bringing it with you, the DS is not my cup of tea (See, I like games, not gimmicks), and this sounds like yet another step away from what I like.

You cannot seriously have bought and played a game on a regular Game Boy Advance, and then compared it to the SP (half size, built in battery, backlight) and not felt fucked. Seriously. The only issue with the SP is that you needed a cable (= another way to make more money) to be able to use headphones. Otherwise, they were like night and day.

So it will be slightly better than crap? Awesome!

Like I stated, if it sells well enough, like we know all Nintendo products do, then yes, it will turn into a successor. If it doesn't, then we'll just have to wait and see what happens. But yeah, it will. Because every kid out there deeply desires to be able to play Mercenaries from Resident Evil 4 while on the go on the very first possible day.
The console itself might be a good idea (The Power Glove didn't work back in the 90's, it worked when pimped out as the Wii, the Virtual Boy didn't work back in the 90's, it'll probably work while pimped out as the 3DS) but I can see no way to justify that insane price tag.
I'm terribly sorry for not wanting to bite into the 3D-bullshit (I'm even more furious that every fning game needs a 3D-function these days) and buy a very expensive console upon release which has quite possibly the worst line up of games since the Playstation 2. But hey, your money.

You're right on this point. I'm enjoying my GBA games on a GB Micro now. Before that I was enjoying the SP (too bad it broke :|), and before that I was enjoying the GBA.
Cardboard, I'm ready to catch your "I hope you're not serious. The GB Micro?! You're weird!".

Which is why I'm looking to win an eBay auction instead of buying it in a store, if I can get it for 200$ or less.

I think the DS had worse than that. Yeah! I mean, look at this.

I mean, at launch, I just got Super Mario 64 DS. Metroid Prime Hunters was a freaking demo that came with the console, not a retailed game! (The real thing came out months later).
For the 3DS, if I can get it a bit after the launch, that's SSFIV 3D Edition and Rayman 3D for me. This was my personal opinion, but by looking at the list above this, I'm sure I'm not the only one thinking like this.
----
And here's my opinion on 3D in general.
I'm not a 3D hater. I like 3D. But I just don't like its marketing, and the glasses. I mean, they are already selling 3D TVs and glasses on the market for a freaking high price while there is almost no 3D content!
And it should be an option in every theater, so those 3D haters and those who get bad side effects from 3D can enjoy the movie.
No but seriously, what annoys me the most are those 3D haters. Why? Because 3D without glasses and without side effects is obviously the future. It's just that companies are pushing this too early. I wish they could wait before they push the 3D to the market for the price, the content and to work on the side effects!
So yeah, a proper 3D (without glasses and without side effects) is the future. U mad? Deal with it!
Hey all, for anyone who plans to buy and wants a decent discount, Amazon is offering $25 off any 3DS game when you preorder the system:
http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-3DS-Cosmo-Black/dp/B002I096AA/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1301146367&sr=8-2
The only bummer is you have to wait for your 3DS system to ship before you get the credit. So I had to cancel my Pilotwings pre-order and will wait until I get the code to order... oh well, it's worth the discount :)

Let me start off by saying that I always wanted a GBA Micro but could never find one. Thanks for pulling that wound open :(
Yes, 3D is most likely the future. And the future isn't today. Yeah, I'm getting old.

Myes, excellent question. See I am one of those fucked up people who like to play video games while I'm walking down the street. Now, this has been close to impossible with the recent portable consoles, and from what I've seen, game utilizing the 3D effect pretty much forces you to press the console up against your face and then do cool shit like turn and twist it to move the camera or character or whatnot. See this is cool, I can imagine doing this at home, but then again, if I'm at home, I rather play PS3 or Gamecube, due to most excellent line up of games. I guess what brings my piss to a boil is the price tag. If every release title was included with the 3DS, then yeah, it'd be worth it. As for now, 3 hours of 3D-gaming before recharge is required... yeah. No. I just don't see it.

Haha! I was expecting a bad comment, but also a good one.
About the GB Micro, yeah, it's a pretty rare console. I found mine used in a small video game shop for only 40 bucks. For the rarity, I couldn't help myself but to buy it, and I see that the screen is better (while smaller) than the one on the other models, and it's the most portable of all GBAs (if not all video gaming consoles).

lol! I can never imagine myself playing games while walking at all! I have to sit or stand still to play.

I tried the 3DS, and I disagree with this part.
You even have to keep your face in a distance from the screen so you can see everything. And that "sweet spot" is easy to find and it's not that easy to get off it. And who told you of a game that uses the 3DS's built-in accelerometer to move the camera or the character? If someone makes a game like this, he's definately weird! Oh wait... maybe Super Monkey Ball 3D... but I think they give you the option to the control the game with the "Circle pad" instead.
Anyway, you can always turn off the 3D to enjoy your glorified PSP. :P (Not thinking you're getting the 3DS anyway.)

I actually think it makes Wii graphics, like the PSP. But to produce 3D display without glasses, it has to be more powerful than the Wii.

It's okay. You wouldn't like it. The GBASP buttons are so much better and less "squishy" than the GBA Micro buttons. I don't know why Nintendo made the GBASP's buttons and then went backwards with ALL their hardware afterward, giving them all a terrible squishy feel. The GBASP's buttons are perfect.
A portable system with 3-5 hours of battery life... I guess that's all that has to be said.
And yes, I was interested in 3DS and I'd still like to see one in action.

I only play my NDS indoors anyway, it would be crazy to play a portable system like that regularly on the streets of Rio. So I couldn't care less for the battery's life...
As for the 3D effect it is a major selling point for me. Even when I know that again most developers will completely ignore the new system's uniqueness and use it as a gimmick instead of making it truly a part of the gameplay.

I got me one today. I like it. The 3D effect really does look nice.
Now to wait until some good games come out for it. None of the launch titles were particularly noteworthy. (I ended up with Ridge Racer 3D, which admittedly is a pretty good game)

Not interested yet. But I am curious if I'll be able to see the 3d images at all. Autostereograms don't work for me and I have perceived the 3d effects of the two 3d movies I've watched as a lot less pronounced than they should have been. Except for some visual snow, I have perfect vision.
Edit: At one point the people next to me would instinctively dodge an object that popped out of the screen and moved closer towards us at a high speed, but for me it had hardly left the screen surface. Anyway, I'll see if the 3DS is compatible with me soon enough. ;)
