3 frames improvement for the already great published movie. Nice. Now watch the submission text. Wow, they fixed the weird camera angles, amazing! Well actually I don't remember any odd things in the last submission... nevermind. It must deserve a yes vote! But hey, watch it first! Woohoo, started. - some minutes later - WHAT THE HOLY EPIC SHUOAT IS THAT. Besides the improvements (which is GREAT) I have no idea what the hell meant this TAS. Maybe it's a tricky april fools submission (submission date 2011-04-10 15:48:52 ==> -10+15+48-52 = 1. 2011/04/1), or a very rare japanese joke that only people with manga eyes can watch this, maybe it's some kind of revenge or provocation to claim a lot theoretical dollars, or I don't know. Seriously. I never saw a TAS with such a huge difference between the comment/goal/description/change and the movie itself. I would vote a yes if I don't have to watch the TAS. Authors: if you want to make it ENTERTAINABLE, please try to do a "WATCHABLE" version, or "AT LEAST 25% MARIO" clip so I can watch him a bit longer rather than random sprites and textures scaled up to 256x showing 1-2 colors blinking up randomly. Also here's the psarcasmeudo-code for handling the camera angles in this TAS: (I added a few example about which script is used at a time)
How to make entertainable camera actions by Uwe Boll
// Side note: Takes damege to save time

[1:03, 2:35, 2:45, 4:10, 4:25]
if mario goes upward
   iterate through all objects
find the "most objects in one line" where the camera is below mario

/* You need this to make it entertainable since this way you will see everything except mario for a few frames. Every 1-frame blinks and sick things are intended because I learned this for years. */

[1:21, 1:24]
if mario goes forward
   iterate through all objects
find the "most objects in one line" where the camera is in front of mario while facing backward

/* I learned this from star wars, looks amazing, you think it's over AND NO it's continues and it's over AND NO i....... */

[1:50, 3:11]
if mario is boring
try to move the camera rapidly back and forth

/* One of my favourite trick, sometimes mario goes BIG then small it's amazing, no need to borrow big mario and small mario costumes */

SPECIAL EFFECT [3:00]
if mario goes anywhere
if there's only a few objects that could hide mario
try to get an angle to get below the whole level

/* This will makes sure that when mario jumps, everyone will thinks that he transforms into lava, this way we don't need blue screen. I'm very good */

SPECIAL EFFECT 2 [1:45, 4:22]
if mario goes anywhere
aim with the camera at mario with few degrees fewer to get a "mario is amazingly fast"

/* I learned this from 2fast2furious, since mario was tired I thought it will be very funny to make crazy offsets so sonic should die recklessly */
Also here's a helpful guide for the authors, directly from the Guidelines, your welcome. Camera position and angles Avoid quickly wobbling the camera or playing field around, producing seizure inducing video. Have the camera focus on the action, allowing the viewer to see as much relevant material as possible. Keep the zoom level far enough that everything that needs to be seen is seen, but not so far that the action is incomprehensible. edit: of course I voted NO.

I think that all the published movie should have a list of former TASers prior to that. I think it's more motivational and much more "fair" to get a real aspect about TASes. Since TASVideos is a friendly scene where everyone helps each other, every TASer should have their fame if they improve a movie (mostly because each TASer finds out a new glitch and improves the movie, it's actually a community/teamwork). Even a "number of times this game is improved" should be funny. Make sure that the author of a TAS is really those who wrote inputs to the final submission file.

Personman: Thanks for the summary. I don't feel so nervous anymore about this being published. But if this is published, should the run keep its star?

As the unsuspecting viewer cares even less about three frames than I do, I would recommend the preceding movie in favor of this one due to being more pleasing to the eye, not to mention comprehensible. Thus, no.

Though the run has a brand new set of names on it, it still feels like the 0-star run, only with someone else's additions. Now, I certainly know it's more complicated than this, but this is what I see as a viewer. As such, it feels almost disrespectful to the efforts of the previous team to replace it as such. This isn't a problem here alone, I'll add. In any similar case I think some tribute should be given to the previous team.
I can certainly understand the potential feelings of disappointment an author (or authors) could get if their very hard work is obsoleted by somebody else's, especially if the improvement is very minor. However, that's just the harsh reality that TASers have to live with.
The thing is, the old 0 Star team wants this run published. We would not find it disrespectful at all. We want the #1 run to be the run featured on the site. If that is not our run, then so be it. As I have stated before, we are friends with the submitters of this new run, and are all for it obsoleting the TAS that we was a part of. We are very happy that they found these 3 frames simply because it's another step closer to maxing out the game that we love. I hope when adelikat judges this, he regards how we, the former 0 Star team, feel about the situation.

Interesting argument, but I'm pretty sure this is a real submission.

I find it interesting and nice that the 'old 0 star team' wants this run to be published. I personally feel that all of the videos on this site are peer reviewed better than most scientific articles, though the rightful claim to authorship is a bit frustrated. However, the authors of this video do concede that the input (for the movements) is 'unchanged' from the previous video. So, credit is indeed given to the previous authors for their contributions. It's likely incredibly difficult to do, but it would be great if previous authors could be recognized in a more consistent & rigorous fashion for their contributions to the newest submissions. If that could happen, then I believe that a lot of people's qualms about accepting this video, or any qualms about random people picking up any other video to do minor cleanup on, would be eased. Authorship aside, I agree with a lot of other people that this video is incredibly difficult to watch. Given that the 3 frame improvement is qualitatively non-noticeable, comparing this new video to the old clearly shows that the old video is much easier to follow, understand, and enjoy. Because it was the mission of TAS videos to create something impressively superhuman, time-optimized, AND ENTERTAINING to watch, I believe that this video could easily have its entertainment value improved without compromise in any other area. If this were a scientific article, it would be sent back for edits before re-submission. Edit the video to fix the camera angles, such that they are as good as the ones of the previous submission or better, and then re-submit it. To follow this ideal, I vote no on this video, and will vote yes when it is fixed. Good job finding the improvements =).

I'm still wondering if it would be theoretically possible to change the camera angles without redoing the run, by using some script/program that changes the camera movements and compensates the joystick positions accordingly.

What about a cam hack? (Sorry if it's been suggested before.) We could turn this run into Super Mario 64: Resident Evil. As a bonus, if a cam hack can be made, we could view some really interesting camera angles. Imagine the Bowser fights from an overhead view or BitFS presented as the side-scroller it effectively is. If that could be done, the only thing that would count against this run would be the mildly annoying clicking whenever the authors attempt to change the camera angle.

The TAS input has a deadzone from 7 to -7 in all 4 directions. This means that if an angle like "127, -121" (which is *almost* diagonal to the upper-right. Also, for reference, 127 is the max in any direction.) was used, and you wanted the camera/input flipped 45 degrees (1/8th of a turn), Mupen would read the input as if it were either "6, -127" or "127, 6" depending on which way the camera/input was rotated. But since that is within the deadzone, it is the equivalent of "0, -127" or "127, 0" respectively, thus rendering that input incompatible with the following input. tl;dr It won't work.

Or we could just take the old submission and work the improvements into that instead.

I happened to like the new camera angles, for the record. They added a new perspective on the game. Literally. That, and it makes for a drastically different-looking run, even if only three frames were saved, which is always a plus when it comes to frame-war runs. Adding a late yes vote due to the improvement, and the opinion that rejecting the run based on opinions over bad camera angles would be entirely bad form.

Examples of starred movies can include movies of incredibly high quality or entertainment; a mixture of both is preferred. --> I know that my Post #269255 is a bit crazy, but everything I wrote is true, I just added sarcasm/joke/random because I couldn't believe the intention of the authors of this submission regarding "fixing camera angles". Promoting a seizure-inducing video (by giving a star to it) is WRONG. I hope the authors will make a re-do of this run.

Add me to the list of people who don't want this starred if it is published. It is inferior to the last movie in entertainment, but superior in time. I do think this should be published, but not starred.

What the hell is wrong with you people? the camera angles were great imo, the playarounds during the bowser fights were by far superior to the previous run, and its a 3 frame improvement. Seriously one of the stupider threads on a submission i've ever seen. yes vote

This somewhat resembles the case of the rejected Ninja Gaiden 2 submission by xipo. However there are some differences as mentioned in the preious posts. The bigggest problem: Not only was the camera work less entertainin but also was it more offending to those who had known what could have been expected to see.
<klmz> it reminds me of that people used to keep quoting adelikat's IRC statements in the old good days <adelikat> no doubt <adelikat> klmz, they still do

I honestly don't see the problem outside of the seizure-worthy constant zooming after each Bowser is defeated. I don't know much about TAS'ing M64 but I think those should be editable given that there's a zone load/camera reset right after.

OH NOES MY SENSE OF ENTERTAINMENT IS DIFFERENT FROM YOURS NOW WE MUST FIGHT (This is, as far as I can tell, the entirety of the thread right here. Not that I've bothered trying to read it all; any thread that gets over 100 posts within a day of being created is almost certainly toxic.)

Just watch, he'll refuse to publish this, then unpublish the existing run too. Nobody wins! \o/

Holy freaking crap, 12 pages of comments! Wow. So. I personally don't think such a marginal improvement should necessarily qualify this for publication. Thus, (for me at least) this leaves the difference in entertainment value to consider, and I agree with the sentiment that the new camera work is on the irritating side, so I vote no; I think the current movie with its non-irritating camera angles is just fine.

It depresses me that both SDA and TASVideos have this strange subjective attraction to "entertainment" versus speed and somehow weigh them against eachother as if that is a fair system. Publish the fastest run. This is the fastest run.
