Submission Text Full Submission Page
Syobon action is an incredibly hard game that resembles mario, but with a cat.

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: hourglass-r71
  • Ends input as early as possible
  • Avoids death

Comments

Not much to comment, except that to those watching it in Hourglass, please set FPS to 30 and System Time to 0.

Possible improvements

Since the game has a (high) chance of crashing every time a savestate is loaded, it was extremely difficult to TAS. Maybe once savestates become more stable, better precision can be achieved.

Obviously not. I saw many TASes on nicovideo for this game, by the way...

turbofa made a 1:58.28 TAS of this game and posted the .wtf in the Syobon Action thread. He didn't submit it because it wasn't as fast as the nicovideo run of 1:55.xx. 2:10 is much longer.

Here's an improved version of the run. It completes the game in 1:52.50.
Are you going to submit that as a separate run, or do you want the submission file here replaced (so that you can un-cancel the run)?

I saw the video. The player seems to have ended input early, like my improved run.

Can you please update the file? Thanks!

Syobon Action is one of these games which is mildly fun to play, but boring to watch because you miss the Everything Trying To Kill You aspect when just watching a TASed no-death playthrough. I'll not vote until I've watched an encode, but unless there's something very surprising in there, I'm not expecting much of it.
http://www.youtube.com/Noxxa <dwangoAC> This is a TAS (...). Not suitable for all audiences. May cause undesirable side-effects. May contain emulator abuse. Emulator may be abusive. This product contains glitches known to the state of California to cause egg defects. <Masterjun> I'm just a guy arranging bits in a sequence which could potentially amuse other people looking at these bits <adelikat> In Oregon Trail, I sacrificed my own family to save time. In Star trek, I killed helpless comrades in escape pods to save time. Here, I kill my allies to save time. I think I need help.

I guess I'm going to encode this run.

I have encoded it in lossless h264 (except for color space conversion from RGB to YUV 4:4:4) and high-quality lossy vorbis audio. It plays back perfectly in with the latest CCCP (using MPC-HC) with the default settings. It is 3.70 MB. http://lex.clansfx.co.uk/media/video/syobonaction-tas-jlun2-h264-444-losslessvideo-vorbisaudio.mkv (3.70 MB) Amazing run! I'm very impressed after seeing all the improvements turbofa found, etc.! The game is freeware and can be downloaded from here: http://www.geocities.jp/z_gundam_tanosii/home/Main.html (second text link, which is this). This should probably be included in the submission description.

Thank you for your encodes, Lex and antd! I was amused enough by this video, having struggled with Syobon Action myself. I liked how in the last stage, you manage to jump through a ceiling and run on the ceiling early, which makes it look like you took a cheap way through the level when in fact, getting on the ceiling is required to beat the stage, usually done by bouncing off a guy from a question block. This movie is short enough, and the game infamous enough, that I think it deserves to be published. It would be cool if the movie's description had links to videos of people struggling through the game and its many quirks (though then I imagine we'd have to get permission from the owners of the videos to link to their page...)
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. From the submission comments:
Shoutouts and thanks to mklip2001 for arguably being the nicest and most supportive person on the forums.

Oh, I didn't even see your encode before I posted mine. No, the game's graphics aren't glitchy like that. See my encode.

Since I said I was going to encode this run... Here it is. (Mediafire link) As for the run, I have to say it's pretty good. Yes vote.

I beg to differ. fsvgm's encode worked fine, for comparison, though there was a bit of audio lag. I'll refrain from voting. I like the run, but it seems a little glitchy to encode.

Samsara, your player is failing. Since you're using Windows, get the latest CCCP (Combined Community Codec Pack). I normally wouldn't advocate a codec pack, but the CCCP is actually really up-to-date and good. Use the MPC-HC (Media Player Classic - Home Cinema) that comes with it. It's configured to work properly with the latest h264 technology (such as YUV 4:4:4, which my encode uses), among other things.

After watching the encode (thanks, fsvgm), I'd give it a "Yes". Admittedly not the finest game in existence, it does have a certain legendary status, akin to that of Kaizo Mario. As far as I can tell, it's technically well done and considering a Windows publication is long overdue, I think this may as well be the first one.

I'm voting meh. I think the routes of avoiding the enemies was not very entertaining. Yet the first - third levels were good, the castle level really dropped entertainment value.

I'm not sure what to vote. I'm told this game is very popular, but I'm not sure this movie is quite so entertaining, plus the sprites look pretty bad. I'll abstain from voting.

BTW, you should be TASing Syobon 2 as it has the extra levels which are more difficult.

The newest VLC (1.1.11) is another valid option. As someone who's never played the game I can't say the tas looks too impressive. Sometimes things look like they want to kill you, but there's obviously something I'm not getting here.

I am giving this a very weak yes vote. I think I expected a bit more but I guess the physics of the main character doesn't allow you to explore and do much.

That was fun. I have never seen this game before though.
