Agreed. Someone need to make a TAS of this if possible. One of the best PS1 games!

Nothing stopping you doing it yourself, Nuy. That's what got me into TASing - if you want to see a game done badly enough, I say go for it! You might even enjoy it :-)

Except for the fact that I can't TAS 3D games. The optimizing is too weird to do for me in 3D games.

I'll work on a concept video once I have the ability to get the game (Up to the cafe scene) At first, I thought item management would be the biggest issue, it's not. There's only one enemy that you are required to kill, apparently there's also a nurse and possible one other. With this in mind, all of the ammo needed to beat the game is laid out right on the path. The only big issue with this, is bosses as the shotgun is fairly out of the way compared to say- the rifle. The hammer might also be picked up but I'm too lazy to figure out the numbers. Rifle in the way, fight the Incubator, not Incubus, etc etc. I figure finding a damned glitch other than small time savers would be the biggest issue. =| I guess final time would be around 25-30 minutes.

Has anyone been working on this game for a TAS? If not, I've actually taken some interest in TASing this game myself. Since other TASes like Cave Story aims for the best ending, I figured that that would be the best thing to do for this game as well. That is, the good ending+. Thoughts? I don't know of any glitches that would help the game either, but if there are no objections, I can try and get started on it.

Quick question! I've already gotten up to the cafe in my run and I didn't think of it until now that I am using a cue file for Silent Hill. I just want to check real quick if that is acceptable for this website.

It's basically how you run PSX in bizhawk, yes. But ROM format wouldn't matter as long as it's the original image.

On that note, is it a verified good dump? Lower left corner of the BizHawk window should be a green checkmark. If it's a question block, find a new bin/cue.

Well, bad news. My hard drive got corrupted and now I've lost everything on my laptop including this TAS. It sucks because I got pretty darn far on it! It looks like I'll have to put this TAS on hold for a long while. If anyone wants to take on this project, be my guest!

How recently did you lose everything? Did you re-format the drive? Did you attempt any data recovery at all?

I lost them about three day ago. I did try to recover the data, but the hard drive was too damaged to make any initial recoveries.

All of a sudden, I have this big optimism to start this TAS again. I was able to find small improvements that I can add to the run, as well as a potential glitch. This may seem sudden, but I'm going to tackle this game again soon.

Is your hard drive not actually powering up/being recognized by the system/able to attempt to read data? Or does it just have damaged sectors, which causes it to fail to boot the OS/read or even recognize files? At least if it's the latter, and you still have the drive around, I'd advice to give SpinRite a try. I have pretty much only heard good things of it. It can be a bit of a pain to get it started (on my motherboard I had to get a Win98 boot disk instead of the boot disk shipped with SpinRite), but it's well worth any trouble. It is great for maintenance as well. It can take a while for it to get done with larger drives, but if you leave it running while you're asleep, I'm sure it'll be done when you wake up.

I will agree that SpinRite is a pretty powerful and useful tool, but would caution that if the disk is marking new bad sectors at a rapid pace, some of its aggressive data recovery/repair settings could cause a failing drive to fail completely. If the drive is still somewhat readable, I would recommend attempting to recover only your most valuable data before scanning the entire drive.

I watched the good ending run, and for the most part it looks pretty good movement wise. Controlling Harry is like controlling a car. Also optimizing movement in silent hill would only be understood if you actually played it. I did notice him hugging a wall while trying to get past it at points in the run, which looks rather lazy. And whether or not the enemies spawn at random would make his run unoptimized too. He (under the assumption that enemies location could be manipulated), must have failed to do that. Which was the same treatment he gave to RE2.
