Hello again! The first run was cancelled due to lack of optimization. The second one was due to using the wrong frame rate, causing the space bar to not work properly. The third, and hopefully the correct one, aims to fix the errors present in the last run. It is an improvement of 1 second over a TAS that also uses the spacebar in Nicovideo.

Objectives

  • Emulator used: hourglass - r71
  • Breaks Beats the game in record time
  • Uses correct frame rate of 60
  • Abuses glitches

Comments

Future runs should also TAS this in 60 fps! It allows the spacebar to work properly!

adelikat: Claimed for judging

adelikat: Ideally I would make a verdict about whether or not to use the speed up (spacebar) option and set some kind of precedent. But in this case I think there was too much confusion to get a consensus and the game had a negative response anyway. So I will dodge that issue completely and reject purely on game choice. See also, #3286: jlun2's Windows Syobon Action in 01:51.63.

adelikat: While this will stay rejected, I wanted to clarify the verdict on the use of 2X speed mode. As stated here, 2X will be considered the use of a cheat code, for this game specifically and is the basis of rejection of this submission.

Considering that the spacebar speeds up the entire gameplay and not just some aspect of it in respect to another (like a run button would), there seem not to be much benefit to it in an already short and fast-paced game. At least at normal speed you could see what's going on most of the time, here it all just flies by making you go, "wait, what was—meh, whatever."

I like this run even less now that it's at 2x speed. One of these runs is bad enough. Having two of them would be total overkill.

jlun2, I think the spacebar issue is important enough that BOTH this run and that one should be uncanceled. It's worth having more discussion on this, especially since lots of DOS / Windows games provide ways for people to speed up the game. (For instance, NitroGenesis's run of "The Amazing Spider-Man" uses a faster-than-default PC setting, I believe.)
I agree. I'll have both the submission's up, and see which one fares better. Thanks!

It does. It presses + to increase the speed. Since it says on the startup screen where you pick your graphics card, I thought it was ok, and since the run is published, I guess it was.

It looks like cheating in this one is similar to pressing the space in the VBA emulator to accelarate. I'd rather see the previous version. This one is just over too early that I can't catch the details of it. And I still want to see a new version even though The 8 levels version is not the official one.
Do the work.

A windows game that looks worse than the original NES game that it's parodying? What a waste, I'd say. As for the run itself, I'm undecided on what to vote.

Voting No on this one. I preferred the normal speed one.

I said no to the first, more entertaining, run due to game choice, but it was still much more entertaining to watch than this run. No vote, for poor game choice (this game is more of a parody game) and lack of entertainment.

I thought it was pretty funny, sped-up. I wouldn't have recognized nearly as many of the avoided hazards if I hadn't watched the normal-speed run, though. Is there more of the game you could show?

Initially I was leaning toward meh, but compared to the other runs on this site, this one just doesn't compare. Voting no for poor game choice.

IMO this game is more suited to a superplay deliberately showing off traps than a speedrun, else you miss out on what makes syobon action so interesting. Watch a playthrough: Link to video Link to video
