Hello again :D I'm back with this Monkey Magic TAS, my last run was desynced so I had to redo, and this new one is improved by 30.743 frames (~8min and 32 second) due to new discovers :D
Emulator used: PSXjin v2.0.2 svn0, bios scph7502, Graphics changed to "Nice" + Window mode 640x480, other settings are default!
About the run:
  • Aim for fastest completed time
  • Take damage to save time
  • Use death as shortcut
About the TRICKS:
  • Conversation skip: Normally use game retry can skip this, but without the Check point this trick is useless! Freeze and unfreeze the Monkey is the best to use! The game will check for conversation at 2 times: the moment the bat appears and when it totally appears, so there are 2 ways to use this trick: Freeze and unfreeze 2 times or just Freeze and wait for the bat totally appear, then unfreeze!
  • Damage level: Min -> Normal ATK -> Jumping ATK -> Gold Monkey ATK -> Gold Monkey Jumping ATK -> Power Rod -> Gold Monkey Power Rod -> Max. Power Rod has no effect with bosses
  • Running: Using the Power Rod is faster than normal run, but Monkey will stun for a while, so in general, normal run is faster. To skip the stun, there are 5 ways: enter door, start conversation, climbing, freeze the Monkey or jump to cloud
  • If the Monkey flies on the cloud, you can skip the animation of doing thing, for example, load the gun, pull the switch...
  • Jumping: Jump and instantly attack, after the attack finished, jump again. This allows Monkey to "fly" in the air but the height cannot rise can rise but a little. Jump and freeze the Monkey then unfreeze, and jump again (you can do this to infinity after you get infinite power), with this trick the height can rise much so Monkey can jump to the very high.
About the run:
  • Chapter 1: Enter Stone Monkey - Find Subodye's school and master your Magic Power
Improvement comes from the Jumping trick, after getting Green Magic, I jump to the top instead of go to small passage, this skips the boring chatting with Master, too!
  • Chapter 2: Search for the Ultimate Weapon - Obtain the Power Rod
By freeze and unfreeze the Monkey, 2 boring conversations are skipped
  • Chapter 3: Flower Fruit Mountain - Rescue your friends and defeat the Celestial Fleet
Death is faster than Pause the game and retry. The conversation with the bat is skipped and there's now no need to find the key. At boss fight: I had to load the Gun normally at first to keep it works
  • Chapter 4: Javan Mountain - Pass the Judges of the Dead and rescue Runlay
I must bring 10 books to the Judges. The events in game happen when I get the books. Each time I get one, the scene will move to show the door's opened. By freeze and unfreeze the Monkey, I can move when this happens, but if I move too far, I will die immediately (map glitch), so I have to use the Check point. But if I use that, the event won't happen completely, so the door's still close (or the rock won't raise)
  • Chapter 5: Jourley to the Celestial Heavens - Gain the Divine Power
Found new shortcuts :)
Note: Game's voice is the rom problem!
Enjoy!

Noxxa: Judging.
Noxxa: While the poor sound emulation for the dialogue is a bit of a hindrance, the TAS itself looks decent. Accepting.
Note that this TAS syncs on the bios scph7001 rather than the standard scph1001, if you want to play back the input file. Hoandjzj, please use scph1001 for any future PSX TASes.

natt: Processing...

I can't get this to sync. Could you post checksum information for your disk image?

Awesome! I remember when you first submitted a run for this, and I was hoping this would get improved. It's a fun game. This run may be a little less entertaining than the previous one, actually, because of all the abuse of the jumping bug, but it's still a nice run at a pretty nice pace. I saw your YouTube preview, and the sound is still annoying... it's a shame if it's the game's fault. Regardless, the run still deserves a Yes vote.
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. From the submission comments:
Shoutouts and thanks to mklip2001 for arguably being the nicest and most supportive person on the forums.

What's up with the choppy dialogue? Is this what happens in the actual game? How did they overlook a flaw like that?

Did you mean the game's voice?! Yes, it is like that in the actual game! Or I picked the wrong rom o.O checking... checked! I can only find the (U) [SLUS-00930], the [NTSC-U] [SLUS-00930] doesn't work!

Not true actually, I have the full game, and the sound is completely fine. It's a PAL disk, but I'm sure that the issue is with the emulator decoding the sound effect files. An awesome run, I enjoyed it. Nice to see the improvement as well. This is a great game! Cheers, Franklint

Have to vote no for this. The gameplay itself was ok (nothing amazingly exciting, but still decent enough), but the sound renders it nearly unwatchable. Watching without sound isn't very enjoyable, either, since you end up with long stretches where nothing happens.

^^! Yes, the sound is really a problem! If anyone can tell me how to get the rom with fine sound, I'm willing to remake this TAS!

Hoandjzj, will you please edit your old post that has the ROM site on it, and remove the ROM site? (In general, you should only mention those kinds of things in private messages.) Bernka, what is the new movie file supposed to do?

There are two formats can be used in PSXjin: binary and text. But if you use text, you can't open it with a tas-editor, the movie submitted here is a text file. I just converted it to binary, and it can be edited now. I have submitted a movie with text format before, and it can't be opened by judges, so it got cancelled. I think this is maybe a reation that some people can't get it to sync.

How would that change anything? If both files have the same data in them, they'll both be opened identically by the emulator. For the purposes of sync check and encoding, what does it matter what some other application does. That being said, with PSXjin being PSXjin, I did have to check and see, and I got the same results. Desync at the first boss, with both movies, with both the redump.org verified ISO and the ISO that the author claims he used (although since he refuses to provide checksums, couldn't say for sure), consistently, every time. Am I missing some funderful hidden PSXjin setting?

I didn't refuse to provide checksums, I just didn't know how to get it ^^! Maybe the problem is emulator setting, I will now send you my setting...

http://code.kliu.org/hashcheck/ (Open source, painintheassware free) Install that, then when you go to "properties" on a file, there will be a hash tab.

Ah, that makes thing easier :D, my ISO checksums:

This is the redump.org certified disk. Also syncs on

This is a (b) disk. In either case, bios #1000 is required; that's a J bios and this is a U rom. Edit: The checksums on this bios are the ones that it synced with. But this is actually bios 7502.

I confirmed this run syncs on PSXjin 2.0.2 svn0, with the first ROM natt mentioned (Monkey Magic (USA).bin and checksums in natt's post), and with either scph7502 (PAL) or scph7001 (NTSC-U) as BIOS.
http://www.youtube.com/Noxxa <dwangoAC> This is a TAS (...). Not suitable for all audiences. May cause undesirable side-effects. May contain emulator abuse. Emulator may be abusive. This product contains glitches known to the state of California to cause egg defects. <Masterjun> I'm just a guy arranging bits in a sequence which could potentially amuse other people looking at these bits <adelikat> In Oregon Trail, I sacrificed my own family to save time. In Star trek, I killed helpless comrades in escape pods to save time. Here, I kill my allies to save time. I think I need help.

Do you have a list of verified bios checksums? That would be very handy.

Could the PAL bios be what is causing the sound problem? (I don't know how PSXjin decides if a game is PAL or NTSC)

Nope, that isn't it. scph7001 is a NTSC-U bios and it still has the same sound issues.

The sound emulation is horrible on this. We generally aren't supposed to publish run that are this poorly emulated. I don't think I agree with its acceptance (I say 4 years later) This should be redone on BizHawk.
It's hard to look this good. My TAS projects
