Genesis Home Alone 2 completed quickly. I was inspired to do this run after jlun2 ran the putrid NES version with awful graphics and terrible music. So here's one with great graphics and good music.
Well, actually, I started making this run a while ago, after I saw paul_t's TAS, but I couldn't manipulate the bubbles in Sewage Pipes so I gave up. When jlun2 submitted his new run, I was reminded of this game. 2 days later, I managed a better level and finished it up, so here it is.

  • Takes damage to save time
  • Genre: Platform
The Genesis version is completely different than the NES version. So the 2 should not be compared.

Kevin's Moves

Walking

Well, Kevin can obviously walk.

Jumping

Jumping has the same speed as walking, but when you hit the ground you lose all acceleration for a few frames, so it's best to jump as little as possible.

Slide

Kevin can slide. This normally has the same x-speed as walking, but near the end of the slide, there is a very long cooldown time where Kevin gets up. To avoid this, we jump. You can also cancel a slide by letting go of all input for a frame.

Pushing

Walking, only slower. Used to activate a few traps to harm the Wet Bandits that are useless in a TAS, so this move is only used once for a few frames in Old House.

Taking Damage

Not really a move, but when Kevin takes damage, he goes flying in the air. Same speed as walking, lose about 2 seconds when you hit the ground because Kevin lies dazed. If you are hit by something minor like an icicle, there is no animation and you keep going.

Level by Level Comments

Airport

This level is really straightforward, nothing much to say here. At the end I have to take damage to get in the elevator without killing off the security guards.

After Baggage

I made sure to jump on the first frame possible on all of the conveyor belts. I used a trick to jump higher - I grabbed a ladder for 1 frame and jumped again, and this allows me to jump two times higher.

Street (Daytime)

Pretty simple level. We have to wait a bit for the platforms, so while we wait, Kevin kills a cat, that bastard.

Toy Store

We have to wait for a train to come so we can get up, so I fool around a bit. This is also the first level that isn't just Run Right for Justice.

Street (Nighttime)

Probably the biggest difference from paul_t's TAS, I took a different route so I didn't have to stop as much to kill cats.

Old House

Fairly easy level to play through fast. The Wet Bandits simply chase you through a rotted building, and with some luck manipulation, we can make sure they never hurt us.

Sewage Pipes

Probably the hardest level to TAS. You have to manipulate luck to get big bubbles for the little tubes because they go the fastest. Thankfully I got a decent luck manipulation.

Park

Final level already? At the start of the level, I jump, because it instantly puts Kevin at top speed (Walking on the ice takes longer) We have to climb the Christmas tree to make it to the pigeon lady. The Wet Bandits are much faster now and there are these ninjas that attack you. Thankfully they won't get in our way with tool-assisted precision! Game end and we get a cutscene and credits.
This TAS probably only took 3 days of work, due to the shortness of the game. It's a fairly decent one too, except for 1 problem: there is no Screw Attack! What a fatal flaw. The best moment of the entire series is just gone in this game. I feel ashamed for even TASing it. What a terrible game!
Also, the game wishes me a Merry Christmas, when it's almost summertime. Stupid game developers.

This certainly looks a lot better than the NES version. The only thing it misses is the hilarious terribleness of the NES game, but other than that, this game looks acceptable enough. Yes vote.
http://www.youtube.com/Noxxa <dwangoAC> This is a TAS (...). Not suitable for all audiences. May cause undesirable side-effects. May contain emulator abuse. Emulator may be abusive. This product contains glitches known to the state of California to cause egg defects. <Masterjun> I'm just a guy arranging bits in a sequence which could potentially amuse other people looking at these bits <adelikat> In Oregon Trail, I sacrificed my own family to save time. In Star trek, I killed helpless comrades in escape pods to save time. Here, I kill my allies to save time. I think I need help.

Short enough movie so yes vote... just me or the "Merry Christmas" at the end kind of reminds the Maniac Mansion logo?

Not a fan of the game, but the speedrun itself looked well done. Yes vote.

I ould not stomach this run. I honestly kept looking at the time as it bored me to tears. The only reason it escapes a full No is because of your explanation of how movement worked and how the toy level was actually with its moments of obvious phenomenal controls. It just BARELY scrapes by with a Meh, though the music almost killed that... Mr. Kelly R. Flewin

Now we're talking! Yes vote.
Warning: When making decisions, I try to collect as much data as possible before actually deciding. I try to abstract away and see the principles behind real world events and people's opinions. I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.

I remember getting owned by this game on the last stage, then flipping out and throwing the controller across the room. I think the run looks great, I enjoyed watching it, yes vote.

I'd like to see the SNES version of this instead, but this one probably ends up being more entertaining maybe. Who knows though? This title kind of reminds me of the Genesis Toy Story somehow. Yes vote.

Terrible game, terrible sound, but it's so much more sensible and understandable as a TAS than the NES version. The game objectives make sense and I feel a sense of gratitude for you TASing this game so I never need to play it nor watch a longer run. Yes vote on the basis of technically sound, game works with TASing, and amusing like a virtual train wreck.

I'll vote Meh on the game, but yes on the execution. Really it is a poor game I think. :)

It seems the youtube link for this publication got deleted or something. Was it due to copyright or something?
