The Second Reality Project Reloaded is one of the most well-known Super Mario World hacks in existence today. It is known for its intuitive and unique level design, as well as its lush visual appeal. This hack is a remake of the 2002 hack The Second Reality Project, which was created almost exclusively with vanilla resources. This new incarnation did not change much in terms of level design from the original game--The Second Reality Project was created before the days of custom music, sprites, and fancy ASM-hacks, so they were, for the most part, excluded in this remake.
The IPS patch for this hack can be downloaded here. Lunar IPS is required to patch the game.

Encode:
This run is an improvement of ~1,400 frames over the existing WIP TASes.
Possible improvements:
  • The most notable improvement to this run is lag management. This TAS was done before I became knowledgeable in the art of proper lag manipulation.

Nach: First off, the hack. This hack for the most part seems to be a well made hack. There's plenty of nicely made levels, which are cohesive, and take advantage of what the SMW engine has to offer, and then some. This hack also goes a bit beyond raw level changes, there's new enemies, components of levels that are new or act differently, and so on. It's also refreshing to have a final fight which is something other than Bowser flying around in his piranha copter, even if it is copied out of a different Mario game. The hack isn't perfect though. A few of the new music tracks are quite enjoyable, although most of them are bland, and some of the graphical changes are a bit questionable.
Overall, I find that the game deserves a TAS which shows it off nicely. However, this may not be it, as most of the game was skipped.
The run itself was well played. While admittedly some of it could be optimized a bit more, it's pretty well optimized as is, and takes advantage of some techniques that are relatively recent discoveries in terms of all the years SMW has been TAS'd for. I did not find the run penalizable in this regard, as none of the issues are overly noticeable.
On the other hand, much of the run was repetitive, and flying over or under many levels made this run's entertainment a bit lower than our existing Super Mario World or Super Demo World runs. However, after careful consideration of everyone's comments, it seems that most people don't mind, and really like what the rest of the run has to offer.
Overall, it seems to me that this game would be better served by a 100% run, which is less repetitive and really shows off how varied this game can be. In the mean time though, I find that this run deserves to be published alongside our other SMW runs, and am accepting this hack. We'll debate if this run should be obsoleted by the 100% run when the time comes.

Encode is still processing, but it should be up soon! I absolutely love this TAS. This submission shines in both of the necessary areas: the TAS is entertaining and well-done, and the hack is exceptionally welll-made and visually astounding. I don't know what else I can say! Yes vote! Also, if anyone cares, I've been given explicit permission to submit this for bahamete.

I watched this back when he finished it and posted it in the SNES forum. This is a hell of a TAS of a hell of a hack. Yes vote for sure.

After 36 hours of waiting for it to encode and upload, it desynced. I'm not reencoding it. Someone else can. Ugh.

Huh? For the youtube movie linked, the audio desyncs from the video almost immediately. Am I doing something wrong here?

NOBODY REENCODE IT! In my fit of rage at the fucked up audio last night, I had completely forgotten that I didn't need to redo the entire encoding process--I just have to remux it. Reuploading as we speak.

I think I should clarify why this wasn't submitted by me. I was hoping DarkMoon would write it in the comments but nevermind. I don't think this run belongs on TASvideos because it isn't up to the standards of the other SMW runs. In light of the Kaizo submission, DarkMoon was prodding me to submit this run and I eventually relented and said he could submit it himself (generally, people are free to do whatever they want with my TASes). If this run were to be accepted, I'd by lying if I said I wouldn't be happy about it, but some parts of the run are unavoidably just a bit lazy and no attention to lag reduction was made. I've improved a lot as a TASer and thus, I didn't want to submit it. Either way, I do hope this run is entertaining for viewers. Edit: Oh by the way, I have an SD encode on my channel.

I like the technique of using the bonus game which is ignored in other TASs, in order to get cape early. TASers think beyond normal... :D Edit: I'm amazed at how quick you did Bowser's Starship. First time I played that level, I didn't have so much of an issue with the difficulty, I just took a moment by each segment to play it carefully. Then I got up to Mouser with barely 30 time units left :(

Wow, that's an amazing romhack. I love the Sonic bonus levels :) That said, I'm not sure about this run. While it's surely fast, the old trick of using the cape to bypass entire levels is not all that entertaining to watch. So I'm leaning towards 'meh'.

Well bahamete may be more skilled now than he was back then, but it's still a great run. This hack is one of the best hacks around. Yes vote... Isn't Mister doing a run of this?

Even if it's not up to the standards of the currently-published SMW/SDW runs, it stands on its' own quite well, and I don't think the lesser degree of optimization is severe enough for laypeople to catch on. Don't forget, TASVideos is as much about entertainment as it is about speed, and this is definitely entertaining.

"Processing of the video failed. Please make sure you are uploading a supported file type." I hate YouTube so much. I'm just gonna put bahamete's SD encode in the submission notes for now. It takes ~4 hours to upload each time I try, plus another 4 to process. If someone feels like they can get it under 1.3 GB in that time, I say you should tackle doing the encode instead. It's really annoying at this point.

Not a big fan of this hack. Music was rather uninspired, and it was pretty repetitive throughout. Run seems well executed, but I'm meh on the game choice. Also,
The Second Reality Project was created before the days of custom music, sprites, and fancy ASM-hacks, so they were, for the most part, excluded in this remake.
Were we watching the same game here?

I want to try too.

Did you even read it? The Second Reality Project and The Second Reality Project Reloaded are two different hacks. I explicitly stated that the latter is a remake of the former. The former was made in 2002, before all the fancy custom shit existed.

You also said that the "fancy stuff" was excluded in the remake. The sprites, backgrouds, and music were all updated in Reloaded. I don't recall any custom ASM, but I haven't played it in a while, just watched this TAS.

i would like to say that i loved this run and i think that it would be great if it was published however, if only one run of this game, this run or your all exits run, could be published, i would prefer that the all-extis run be published if/when you finish it due to it showing off more of the hack and it being a better TAS as you have admitted bahamete

There's actually few custom sprites in the game. They're just graphically altered.

I haven't played the hack before, but I didn't find this nearly as entertaining as the Super Mario World runs. In fact, the final level was pretty boring. It also might help to have level by level comments to help those who aren't aware of all the technical stuff that's being done in each level. I'm going to go with Meh.

Marvelous job, Bahamete! I was thoroughly entertained by the interesting things done in the run, especially in the level Invasion Fleet! Yes vote!
