This is a 6.78s improvement over my previous canceled submission. I redid the boss battle using a strategy showed here: Forum/Posts/331379

Game Info:

Phoenix is a top-down outer space-themed fixed shooter similar to Taito's Space Invaders. As commander of the desert crawler Phoenix, your bizarre mission is to fight through flocks of fierce, mutating birds, then destroy the parasitic Mother Ship that's sapping Earth's resources!
  • Emulator used: BizHawk 1.2.0

Goals:

  • Aims for fastest time
  • Genre: Shoot 'em up
This game is way better than Space Invaders, IMO.
Enjoy c:

adelikat: Viewer response was good, accepting for publication as a Alternative

Guga: I guess.

Good on technical value (seems optimized and has the opportunity for creative optimization), but not enough entertainment value for a full yes. I'll vote a strong meh :)

Looks like one of the better Atari 2600 games for TASing (there are very few). Yes vote.

That's better! It's a bit of a shame to see the shield used, but I can forgive that. This definitely looks more optimized. I'd say this deserves Yes.
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. From the submission comments:
Shoutouts and thanks to mklip2001 for arguably being the nicest and most supportive person on the forums.

Do you happen to know the reason why the first screen takes longer to dismiss? It looks like it waits for the enemy shots to disappear before moving into the next level (though it is the only level that does that, so maybe that's just how it behaves...) As for using the shield, I think is nice, it shows more of the game's functionality :)

Similar to a C64 game I used to play called "Gorf". Entertaining enough on the A2600 to get a "Yes" from me.

I'm comparing this to the average (so far) Atari 2600 game rather than the average (TASable) console game, and this is by far the best one of the bunch so far. The TAS is short and full of high-speed action and precision, so the only possible vote for this is yes.

Is this our first non-vault Atari 2600 publication?

Hm... it seems to be rather short. Then again, there are short Moon movies such as King's Bounty. The response is welcome for this game, so I think Moon is good.

This movie has been published. The posts before this message apply to the submission, and posts after this message apply to the published movie. ---- [2230] A2600 Phoenix by Lollorcaust in 00:18.15

So, I don't get it. Are we going to submit TASes of simple vertical shooters "stage 1" now?? There are dozens of such games (Galaga, Space Invaders, Galaxian, Bosconian, but then you could also do Beam Rider, etc.)... what's the point of TASing them? Especially only 'stage 1'... And if there's a point: go ahead and submit entries for the games I mentioned...

What makes me more puzzled is that this got a Moon tier. How? By the way, there's already TAS of Space Invader.

All these (type of) games (with a lot better graphics) also exist for MSX... no one submits these, strangely enough.

TASvideos can moon and unmoon every movie, so if the games you said have a better quality, I'm pretty sure they'll vault my movie and put the new one in the moon tier after being submitted and approved. Sorry for my poor english.

The new tier system doesn't mean that we suddenly accept anything that anybody cares to submit. There are still minimum standards and requirements that need to be fulfilled. Generally speaking, completing the game is one of them (with very few exceptions.) In general playing only the first level in a multi-level game is usually grounds for rejection. (A problematic case is when the game has no ending and the levels just go forever. Those usually tend to be rejected for the simple reason that they are unsuitable for TASing. With some exceptions existing, of course. But that's the general rule of thumb.)

So Warp what do you think about this TAS then? Lollorcaust: please do not see my discussion starting here as a personal offense.

Looking back at the discussion prior to publication, I see that only one person said anything suggesting that it was less than entertaining. In addition, 19 of 22 votes are for Yes. As it turns out, this publication is the lowest-rated current Moon publication on the site, at 4.6 . Its entertainment rating is 4.3 and its technical rating 5.5 . It is in a higher tier than publications like [2190] DS Metal Slug 7 by mtvf1 in 21:27.77 [1356] SNES Battletoads & Double Dragon: The Ultimate Team "2 players" by White Gastra in 17:50.27 [853] NES Ghosts 'n Goblins by Arc in 08:23.13 [984] NES Arkanoid "warps, demo glitch" by Baxter in 04:26.28 [1225] NES Karnov by adelikat in 08:58.50 which are all currently in Vault. This says something about how much we should trust the vote poll and the posts in submission threads.

That was enlightening. Thanks for kind explanation. And Lollorcaust, I didn't mean to offend you. Sorry if I bothered you.
