It starts very interesting, but in later seasons succumbs more and more into lack of new ideas, and introducing tons and tons of new characters who have little to no relevance (it's almost like they replaced coming up with new, original, interesting ideas with just introducing the thirtieth-or-so new character that has never been seen before.) Still some good episodes in the later seasons, but more rarely. After the series proper, the OVAs are a good watch.
The author of Ranma, Takahashi Rumiko, also created Kyoukai no Rinne which started airing in 2015. I watched some episodes of it, but ultimately decided to drop it because it just wasn't satisfying. Art was average at best, plot complexity seemed to be aimed at little children, and story progression seemed carefully tied down to allow for as many episodes as possible, with only a few drops of development (like Rinne's backstory). I only saw one episode on Ranma (the one where Shampoo was introduced), and at least that one episode seemed actually interesting. Unfortunately it's also about 160 episodes, according to MAL.

I'll reiterate my recommendation of the manga, if you haven't read it. Its artwork is delightful and the reader has a lot more control over things like the timing of the jokes, which are sometimes mis-cued in even the better episodes of the anime. I think there are other ways that it surpasses the anime (for example, I know the anime does not have a proper ending), but I can't articulate them at this time. The full manga can be found here. Be aware, however, that it switches to a fan translation halfway through and the quality of the fan translation fluctuates wildly.

Shit 2017 went down a drain. And I created another backlog ontop of it. Welcome to 2018. Where the anime is made up or just failing to follow the Manga or Novel. AniChart shows the latest anime that's out this year or you can bring up something you watched in the past, you can use MyAnimeList to assist. Pingu is best Anime of 2017. Deal with it. Anything marked in red has been rated M (or higher). Anything marked in blue means I just picked it up late during the season, it will be purple if rated M. It will return to default when I catchup. Anime that have come out so far in 2018 (That I've watched & Completed): Batman Ninja (Ninja Batman) - From the studio that brought you Pop Team Epic. Pop Team Epic (Poputepipikku) - I will continue to question how this is PG-13. Anime of 2018 that I will be watching: Winter '18: Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card Arc (Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card-hen) - You have found the hype train. It has brakes. citrus - Uh............................ Ok then. Devilman: Crybaby Darling in the FranXX Fate/EXTRA Last Encore Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens Laid-Back Camp△ (Yuru Camp△) Overlord II - You have found the other hype train. It has no brakes. Violet Evergarden Spring '18: Lostorage Conflated WIXOSS - I STILL NEED TO WATCH/FINISH THE FIRST HALF AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Magical Girl Site (Mahou Shoujo Site) Steins;Gate 0 - NO BRAKES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Tokyo Ghoul:re Summer '18 FLCL Progressive Autumn '18 FLCL Alternative Other (Alphabetized): Kimi ni Todoke: From Me to You (Kimi ni Todoke) - Sawako not Sadako. It's a light-hearted (for the most part) Slice of Life anime. Kimi ni Todoke: From Me to You 2 (Kimi ni Todoke 2nd Season) - And Season 2 is a dragger, for something that has less episodes. If you want to find out what happens, watch it, but it does drag, and there are cliffhangers so weekly watchers were stuffed. Mob Psycho 100 My Little Monster (Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun) - RomCom, Has its moments. No Second Season cause Brain's Base. The OP is misleading to the show interestingly enough. But if you want a time of whatever this is go for it. One Room - AND THERE'S A SECOND SEASON IN THE WORKS. KILL ME. Princess Mononoke (Mononoke Hime) - This is usually one of the Ghibli recommended to watch *blood going off in the background* Yup. Also for those that'll ask. M in Australia. Scum's Wish (Kuzu no Honkai) - Oh, it's an anime where everyone bangs everyone, this is going to be garbage. *gets invested in the story* Fuaaa...

Decided to post a small update on what I've watched or what I'm currently watching. Watched: Death Note: - Finished watching this one, a pretty faithful adaptation of the manga, with only minor, relatively unnecessary content modified or cut out. Assassination Classroom - Picked this one up on my own due to the art and seemingly weird premise. I read the manga first, then watched the anime. The story was great and I think it ended well. Like Death Note, this was a really faithful adaptation to the manga, and the dub was also great. I think the story works out better in animated form. Overlord - My brother recommended me this anime, and while it plays out the whole "sucked into a fantasy world" genre, I enjoyed the first season. Tried to read the manga after watching the first season, and it clearly seems like the manga is the worst way to enjoy the content. Dropped/On Hold: Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid - I got about a half episode into this and it's just clearly not my kind of show. Maybe I'll try it again in the future, but not now. Little Witch Academia - I'm still in a similar boat with this show, haven't watched any episodes since my last post. Watching: Citrus - Uh, yeah. Full Metal Alchemist (2003) - Five episodes in thus far, and already it's pretty different from the manga series. Doesn't make it bad though, just different. Osomatsu-san - I've only watched one episode so far, but it was pretty good. Low priority on the watching list though. Tokyo Ghoul √A - Three episodes in, it's clearly an alternate universe kind of deal in comparison to the manga, but still stays relatively close to the main story in the manga. Heard a lot of bad things about this one, but taking it for what it is, it's fine. Planning to Watch: There's too many for me to count, but I'll list a few of the major shows I'm hyped to watch. Overlord Season 2 - Can't wait to pick up where season 1 left off. Tokyo Ghoul:re - Still need to read at least part of the manga before watching this in the spring. My Hero Academia Season 3 - Will be great to watch the upcoming arc(s?) animated. A lot is going to happen this season for those who only watch the anime. Attack on Titan Season 3 - Like MHA, this should be a fun one to see animated. Everything else can be found on MyAnimeList

It's 63% filler. If I remember correctly the canon part of Fullmetal Alchemist is only like the first 3 episodes in Brotherhood.

Hello fellas! Was a long time ago I checked for new anime series. My preference hasn't changed a bit, looking particularly for a show like Shiguri: Death Frenzy, Kurozuka, Ninja Scroll etc. If you know any new series like those, please let me know.

Does watching OG Dragon Ball count for this thread?
A hundred years from now, they will gaze upon my work and marvel at my skills but never know my name. And that will be good enough for me.

Since I am starting to watch more anime recently, my favorite one as of recently is The Seven Deadly Sins.

To answer my own question, I just started using Netflix and what a treat I got! I found joy watching new series like Baki and One Punch Man. I recommend those, even though they aren't exactly like Shiguri. Baki and One Punch Man are returning this year.

Oops! Missed your post (actually both of them). :v In terms of style, you might be interested in Devilman: Crybaby. Extremely gritty, violent, lots of nudity and shit. Rushed ending though. If you like it, check out Kemonozume from the same director; an unconventional and very underrated show. Actually, you know what? Scratch that—watch Kemonozume first. The currently ongoing Dororo is on the tamer side, but is closer to your tastes thematically (feudal era Japan, swordfighting, demons, people dying and whatnot) and is extremely competently done. Also Onihei I suppose, but that's more like a very realistic episodic procedural cop drama set in the 18th century Japan. Also check out Attack on Titan if you haven't yet. And JoJo. Can't go wrong with either: good gritty action, decent characters, well-written plot and excellent visuals. And if you've liked One-Punch Man... Well, I won't comment on the second season's quality—for now—but do yourself a favor and watch Mob Psycho 100 from the same author. It's every bit as good; arguably better. Similar themes but more interesting characters and more plot development compared to the season 1 of OPM. On to the stuff I'm not sure about. Katanagatari is a contentious recommendation; it kind of fits the bill thematically (swordfighting, ninja...) but not at all stylistically (there's a fuckton of dialogue and not remotely as much action; the art style takes a while to get used to). But it's an amazing show for what it is, it's clever and has amazing soundtrack and animation, so it feels unfair not to mention it. People seem to really be divided about its ending, though! Golden Kamuy... I would certainly recommend it if it wasn't so inferior to the manga. The latter is a top read, one of the best stories I know—with amazing characters, too. The adaptation is... acceptable I guess? It follows the plot very closely, but you'd be losing out on a lot of expressiveness of the original. And on to the stuff that hasn't aired yet. If you've liked Baki you're probably going to enjoy Kengan Ashura which will air next season. It's stylistically similar and the manga is one of the most fun martial arts stories I've read. Excellent character cast! Also you absolutely shouldn't miss Vinland Saga when it airs. It's going to be amazing on every level. EDIT: There's a lot to say and show about JoJo, but if I were to pick a single non-spoilery scene to try selling you on the series, it'd probably be this one (it's uncensored on the blurays, obviously). Just the perfect mix of deadpan seriousness and whimsical absurdity. It was this exact scene that convinced me that the new JoJo adaptation was going to be quite the ride.

If you're unsure, I'll second this recommendation. Keep in mind that the episodes are double the standard length (so 50 minutes). This means it may sometimes feels a bit slow compared to what you're used to, but I think the pacing is the better for it.

For sure, it's just that AngerFist isn't normally into stuff like that. As far as I know he prefers gritty, visceral action series. Katanagatari is kind of the opposite: it relies on building up to the fights—while the fights themselves are often short, spaced far apart from each other, and not necessarily violent. But it really becomes great once you get emotionally invested into the characters, because they're all wonderful and distinct personalities. Btw, I felt like the final episode in particular took some inspiration from Bruce Lee's unfinished version of Game of Death, and possibly from the 2009 film Goemon (at least visually—I know the novels were released before the movie). Also, holy shit the second episode of OPM S2 is a smoking turd. Not going to watch this travesty any longer.

If only it was just animation... Pacing, framing, editing—every directorial aspect is a mess at best, failure most of the time. And the sound design is not much better; even voice acting feels lifeless. I don't blame them. I mean at first I thought it was only going to be worse than S1—which would be forgivable by itself—but it ended up being just bad. I have seen dumb otakubait comedies done with more love and effort, which is not the kind of competition you want for a franchise like this. Apparently the show is already so deep in production hell that episode 2 listed 5 chief animation directors, 3 animation directors, and 3 assistant animation directors in its credits (normally you have 2–4 people fulfilling these functions). The blame should be shared between both the production committee for poor organization and the studio for poor resource management (and agreeing to this job in the first place, seeing how their schedule was already swamped), and I sincerely hope it will receive a bad enough backlash for them to change their approach to S3 and beyond.

moozooh my beloved friend! :) I will definitely give a shot to your recommendations. I am veeeery late to the Netflix party but I subscribed a few months ago and came across quite good shows like Baki. Again, I highly recommend watching One Punch Man. What signifies the show is its humour, combining different various animation and has a 100% rotten tomato score. As far as finding similar shows like Shigurui, I think it's safe bet there won't be any similar show. Believe it or not, I created a twitter account, just to send a tweet to the shows director and hoping they would resume working on the show. I managed to inspire another guy to do the same lol.. I am absolutely mesmerized by Shigurui. The way Fujiki discovers various technique and how it is animated is quite astonishing to me. His nemesis, Irako Seigen (some sites type his name as Seigen Irako, not sure which one is his first name), mockingly taunts him so bad, you can feel Fujiki's anger. I just found out that the guy who voiced Kogan Iwamoto died 2014 :( Shigurui certainly isn't your typical commercialized anime show.

yeah, Mob Psycho 100 is way better than One Punch Man.

At first glance, they seem very similar. I think One Punch Man is slightly more subtle.

No Dorohedoro, huh? Tut-tut. Go read the manga asap. :D Overall, this seems like the weakest winter season since 2014 by a good margin. Aside from Dorohedoro I'll be watching Eizouken (because I have complete faith in whatever Masaaki Yuasa is doing), the new Haikyuu, and uh... probably nothing else unless a sleeper hit emerges (from the toilet, like Hanako-kun?) and proves itself by the end of the season. As for Madoka, its third movie as well as virtually every other sequel or spin-off to other popular series that came out in the past few years have made me extremely wary of shitty writing. I'm not aware of a single one that wasn't mediocre at best.

Gonna have to if it's a Netflix Anime. I'll consider reading it tho, since I don't read as much manga and just wait 2 seasons for it to finally come out to the west.
