MOD EDIT: Thread title changed, as Mupen-RR is no longer deprecated.
With the release of BizHawk 1.5.0, N64 is now supported and we finally have an alternative to mupen! HUGE thanks to micro500 who did the porting of mupen64plus into BizHawk for this project. For those intruiged and/or new to Bizhawk, here are some major reasons to upgrade immediately to Bizhawk: *Better core, including the pause glitch in Oot fixed, and many games are now TASable such as DK64 and Rayman 2 *Doesn't crash all the time *Reset Recording *Integrated Ram Watch/Search/Memory Viewing tools *Lua support *Sync stable movie recording (note: There may be core determinacy issues in mupen64plus, but at least the movie/savestate system isn't the culprit) *Automatic saving/loading of plugin settings (no longer will the viewer have to set up the emulator before playing the movie) *Much better and more stable encoding *More hotkeys, tools, friendlier UI *And most importantly: An active development crew (as opposed to mupen which has been basically untouched for 8 years) The main point of this thread, is to get users to use BizHawk and "peer review" the N64 core, and have a discussion on officially deprecating (and one day banning) mupen for submission to TASVideos.

Also, to those coming from mupen, a big difference you will notice is that BizHawk records every frame, not just input frames. This will cause issues with comparing to old movies unfortunately. However, to get the TAS experience you are used to, I recommend going to Config -> Enable -> Frame Advance - Skip Lag Frames.

Is Banjo-Tooie supported? Will there be an easy way to convert to an input file style that only has input on input frames, because IIRC n64 TASBots need to supply input only when the console polls on input frames? Everything I am seeing is yessssss. I am hyped for awesome N64 TASes now

You are a bit confused here. What is needed is to go from .bkm (which is all frames) to only input frames. While there is no lua script for that yet, it would not be hard to make. The opposite already exists, going from input frames to all frames, for mupen conversions, this page describes how to do that.

I expect good support and quality in N64 core Bizhawk... really Mupen 64 rr is an emulator confusing and complicated to work a tool assisted... And I hope that there is also support for playstation too. I'm looking forward to playing with version 1.5.0 of Bizhawk!

There may be some bugs in the N64 core, but it's not majorly bad. Good bye Mupen you served us as best as you could.

I'm currently testing Super Mario 64 TAS movies. Super Mario 64 "0 stars" TAS (5:02.25) seems to be 5:04.88 now. I'm getting desynchs on 120 star TAS though. I'll see if I can fix it somehow (or know where the desync is coming from). M64_reader lua script to read m64 files probably is reading inputs 1-2 frames later than it should, but I'm still not sure about this. (or this being the only problem).

The 120 stars TAS you are experiencing desyncs with is console verified, correct?[/list]

yeah, but for some reason I'm thinking the problem is being the m64_reader script, not the emulator. I'll have to test this more carefully.

I'm having an issue opening up Bizhawk. I downloaded the prerequisites installer from google code. But whenever I open up the .exe file (BizHawk.MultiClient) it just crashes on startup. Am I missing an important step?

diagnostics steps 1. reboot 2. run the prerequisites installer 3. reboot again. cos you never know. 4. say whether C:\windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\mscorlib.dll exists 5. run bizhawk from a folder on your desktop 6. disable your security software 7. look for folders in the bizhawk dlls subdirectory which have an unblock option from the windows file > properties dialog, and unblock them 8. dearchive it with winrar instead of whatever you used

Thank you for the helpful steps zeromus, but I tried everything and its still not starting up. Heres the error message: What is KERNELBASE.dll? I can't find that anywhere... Also, is it possible that Windows 7 is the problem? I did try compatibility mode and run as admin, but didnt do anything.

please check eventviewer application log for anything interesting. as well, run this http://blogs.msdn.com/cfs-file.ashx/__key/CommunityServer-Components-PostAttachments/00-08-99-90-04/netfx_5F00_setupverifier_5F00_new.zip and choose ".net framework 4 full" and supply the log if verification failed

I'm excited for the future of N64 TASing! So I tested out the N64 core with Kirby 64 and Super Mario 64. A problem I'm noticing, though, is that some or most of the textures are pixellated: It looks like the tree and Power graphics, and wall and grass textures look okay, but everything else is blurred like a scaled raster image. Is that an inherent problem from mupen64plus? And can it be fixed?

I fixed that by changing the graphic plugin settings. glide64 looks better for me on sm64 than rice.

I found out what was causing Bizhawk to desync with Super Mario 64 .m64 files. Apparently m64_reader.lua script is reading 1 frame later than it should. Just for creating the .bkm files, I fixed it by erasing the first frame on .m64 file. Currently replaying 120 star TAS, I'll post .bkm files when finished with that (I'll not replay 70 star TAS now).

So I've tried TASing Rayman 2 and for some reason it wont load properly. I've tried all 3 video plugins and they all do the same thing. The problem I'm having is that, it will start the rom with a black screen, then after about 15 seconds the demo will start playing acting as if i didn't have a controller plugged in. If I mash A at this point the game will either freeze and then start another demo after some time or go to the main menu. Could this be caused by certain settings within the video plugin? I've messed around with different settings and haven't been able to fix it.

This might be the same issue I usually have with mupen, but I did the same method. Glide black screens my ass when screenshotting and dumping but Rice is fine. I'll guess I will use Rice for now on... until I update my graphics.

Also up your resolution size, the default is 320x240 which, when scaled, looks crappy

Just asking is there a Rice plugin encoding guide?
