This is a tool-assisted speedrun (TAS) on Double Dragon for SEGA Genesis (Submission #2). It is 1 min, 18 sec faster than my previous run. Now it beats all existing records and all knowledge is used!

Movie objectives:

  • Emulator used: GENS-rerecording v11a
  • Aims for the fastest time
  • Take damage to save time
  • Vivacity and energy (You won't be bored watching this!)

My comments:

I expected that someone from judges will watch Aqfaq's test movie and I don't understand why Spikestuff began to calm me (I still had a chance)! I had a great time ReTASing this game, but I wasn't happy when I passed it (3rd time).

Tricks/Glitches

If the player is in the air (jumped) when an enemy went out from building/wall or just keeps standing, it disappears!

Movie comments

Fastest time, improves and etc. Whip is the most powerful weapon in the game (excepting dynamite) and almost all enemies die after the second hit. I've been wrong about beating up enemies with foots and baseball bats! Sorry! Manipulating AI is hard and I was afraid I won't beat some moments in my previous run! The most difficult mission is the 3rd because of the largest number of fights and I was a little upset that I couldn't throw enemies while holding the whip. The most difficult moment in the 4th mission was to take the extreme left position to "kill" the final boss and finish the game faster. Special thanks to Aqfaq for a test movie and RAM adresses though I didn't use them!

Truncated: Judging!
Truncated: Replaced movie with new version which is 1 frame faster.
This TAS is all I hoped it would be. Nice improvements with the new glitches overall and better enemy manipulation. I will accept this movie for the moon category. Congratulations Dimon!

Welcome back Dimon. Voting Yes like last time but... (Current | Previous w/ fix input) So like usual I'm skeptical on your input. Since this is more on the fly. When I'll get back home I'll modify the starting input for you. I cannot really check into it atm.

[06:21:43 PM] <Guga_> isn't Spikestuff being too bitch about that input? More like the input of any movie that you think is "bad stuff"...

Of course I'll "bitch" about the input when the Rerecord count is questionable... Also if it helps more. A Castlevania TAS was obsoleted by 1 frame. So... I want to prevent seeing any type of obsoletion happen to something that seems worthy of staying on the site for a long time. Also to bring up Dimon's other Double Dragon I requested an update without my name and if I do fix this again, I don't want my name credited for someone else's work when mine is less than 1%.

This is MUCH MUCH better than the previous version. Fights look very quick here. The lag in Stage 3 is nearly gone. The enemy grouping looks more efficient. There may still be improvements left to do in places, but this is now good enough for a first publication! Great job getting some really quick kills on enemies by having them magically glitch away, especially the final boss. That was really awesome. And I agree with kurabupengin... I'd love to see an improvement to the very-old run on the NES version.
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. From the submission comments:
Shoutouts and thanks to mklip2001 for arguably being the nicest and most supportive person on the forums.

Well... I'll try to make an improvement on DD for Nintendo NES though it was the only DD for NES which I have never played in my childhood! Maybe this game wasn't actual for piracy in 90's. feos, what can you say about that?

I loved how the enemies just walk away, like not concerned about their own game. Otherwise, looks really good.
Warning: When making decisions, I try to collect as much data as possible before actually deciding. I try to abstract away and see the principles behind real world events and people's opinions. I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.

What the? I don't remember those enemies being such cowards when I played this game. Nice work.

With so much enemy manipulation, It's hard to believe that.

Well. That was brief. Nice work, Dimon! This is a sizable improvement over your previous effort and definitely looks like superhuman play now.

Yeah, I would like to have all thought about me that typical TASer with no games published made sth almost unbelievable, but I have to tell the truth! Knowing that elbow jab is the most powerful move (and the fastest way to kill bad guys) and having chances to equip with a whip, which is the most powerful weapon (excepting dynamite) gives you opportunity not to look for useful RAM adresses at all!

I'm curious why, at the 2:56 mark, you don't jump to make the second abobo disappear?

It looks like this is to set up the kill on the next two enemies. Disappearing the Abobo would cause the screen to scroll before he can reach the edge of the screen. And you probably can't get those enemies into the optimal position unless you stand at the edge when you scroll.

Hah, I tried to do that, but he just can't disappear because he is the last enemy in the cycle of the mission and disappearing trick doesn't work in that case! At least I made about 40 jumps, all to no avail. Even Aqfaq didn't do that in his test run!

That was surprisingly fast! Nice job! I like that the game ended with a WTF moment.
