So, I'm TASing Phoenix Wright (ha ha, wring my neck later, but I haven't found anything that outright banned this game, and trust me, I looked), but I have a question: Japanese or English version? Given the nature of the game, I feel like it'd be a bit of a cheat to use the J version, but the site has allowed J versions for a bit now, so I'm wondering maybe separate runs for Japanese and English? (But I don't think that would be vaultable). Also, feel free to begin debate on whether this game should be allowed or not. I've been pondering whether this game could make a legitimate TAS or not. Boring as hell, sure, but I haven't thought of anything to say that it wouldn't be its own legitimate TAS. Would love some thoughts on that as well.

It's not that it wouldn't be allowed, it's that visual novels are a terrible genre to TAS so nobody's ever considered it. It'd be like taking a book and flipping through all the pages real quick and saying you TASed the book. I mean, virtually any game is vaultable, but I don't think anyone's going to find it an entertaining run.

I would say English, because someone on nicovideo has already done the whole game (ed: this is the third game in the series, rather, not the first) TASed in Japanese, starting here: http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm23301281 And all of Ghost Trick has been TASed in Japanese, here: http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm22577158/videoExplorer

Despite you can prove us wrong, this game would probably be guilty to be boring as hell. Also, I see no evidence about how the run would be any different from a realtime speedrunner. Seriously thought, if you're really motivited, I'll suggest you make all the sixth title on DS with one input. That could be actually worth a watch.

Yeah, I knew immediately when I considered it that it was going to be one of the most boring runs on the site. But it's interesting to see how far the definition of a TAS can be taken. An argument I'd pull up in favor for it is the Myst run. Baxter's old comments still stand, but it still makes for a vault entry. Potato, I might actually consider that, now that I think of it lol.

Well, as a warning, this may break the record for longest TAS. I looked at walkthroughs, and as of the end of case 1, I'm only ~4 minutes faster, and the complete walkthroughs take 15 hours to complete the game. So...this may be a long one, and I don't blame the judges for rejecting it on that basis.

Well, if it helps, the link Patashu wrote says the TAS is over 5 hours long, and the longest TAS published here is 8 hours, so you'll do fine.

The length of the run wouldn't be an issue. There's no limit as to how long/short a run must be to be accepted on the site. A thing you probably should be more concerned about is this Vault rule, which forbids games like this to the Vault:
Wiki: Vault wrote:
  • If a game consists of presenting a story, with little to no user creativity altering the game in any way, then it is unacceptable.
    • This includes games which are overwhelmingly made up of cut scenes, with little to no user interaction anywhere.
      • For example, Super Adventure Rockman.
    • Games which are of a Choose Your Own Adventure story book variety, where the user has no creative control beyond choosing between predefined choices.
EDIT: And there's also this rule:
Wiki: Vault wrote:
  • The gameplay still needs to standout from non-assisted play.
    • Example of a (mini)game which does not is Desert Bus.

Ok, that may steer me from this game. I'm not above finishing it, though, and sending it in just in case.

It would help if there were menu exploits or other things inside the limited gameplay that would make the game less "trivial".

Probably one issue due to no one really testing this for TASing. Microphone Episode 5 Rise from the Ashes
Fingerprinting
"Highlight the fingerprint set and choose "Spray". Then choose a finger you want to examine. When a grid-like background takes over the touch screen, first tap around the screen to sprinkle the aluminum powder everywhere. Then, once you think you've spread enough powder, blow on the microphone to blow off the contents, revealing the fingerprint. Last, you get to pick whose fingerprints they are in the fingerprint files. If it matches, you'll know that person has been in the room. If not, try another."

If you mean the Microphone function in the emulator, I have tried with Super Princess Peach, namely the underwater sections, and it works fine.

I'd really like to know what all of the RAM values mean, so exploits could possibly happen, but it's hard to figure them out when you don't know what you're looking for and aren't versed in video game hardware.

reads yep2yel's signature Release WIPS at certain intervals.
First WIP Tutorial Stuff Completed Second WIP Larry Butz and Frank Sahwitz. (Alternately can be part of First WIP) Third WIP Cross Examination #1 & #2 Fourth WIP Cross Examination #3 and NOT GUILTY Fifth WIP HOORAY LARRY! Get into Turnabout Sisters.
Alternately you can upload the whole chapter completed but I wouldn't recommended it especially at what happens in Cross Examination #3. I'm also looking into this, so definitely you make sure you have WIPs.

I seriously recommend doing all six runs simultaneously and the games in english. Fun things to do: Making the games end at the same time, shouting 6 simultaneous objections/hold its (with different characters???) Maybe if one of the games runs much longer than another you can make the other games run slower by choosing dumb answers or something.

I dunno about having Gyakuten Saiban 1-3 (Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney; Justice for All; Trials and Tribulations), Gyakuten Kenji series (Ace Attorney Investigations Miles Edgeworth/Prosecutor's Path), and Gyakuten Saiban 4 (Apollo Justice) all played at once... The first issue would be with Gyakuten Kenji 2 [AAI2: Prosecutor's Path, the English Translation's title] and the other games due to that game being released only in Japan and the other games being in English. Second issue involves presenting evidence during trials as well as during the Psyche-lock bits. When handling one section of, say, JfA's Psyche-lock segment and you were in a rebuttal in AAI and presented the wrong evidence there. It can become a bit chaotic. Don't get me wrong! I'd be interested in seeing it happen, but I'm just not sure about how it would work. Just my little opinion on the multiple inputs idea. Please don't let my rambles discourage you from working on this!

Shesus, that's long. Well, you're doing the right input which is to use A to go through the dialogue and pen when you have to definitely use it. How important was the B button in this game anyways?

As far as I know, there's never any use for it. If you've played through the cases before, you were able to use B to speed through dialogs, but that would require SRAM to record.

I believe only the Gyakuten Kenji 2 title wasn't localized outside of japan, but there's a rather nice and high-quality fan-translation hack. So, you may consider this hack as viable option since we probably won't see this title make a come back on the market with the regular DS(it's shame, since I played it and thought it was really good or at least way better than the first one!)

A workaround would be to present evidence at same time as browsing some dialog or trying to trigger something that make the "Y" button unusable for few frame. Even with that many game, this shouldn't a huge deal, but I agree t that some occasion could be a challenge :) Also, at some point, I'm sure it would be easy to make a lua script to press B and skip the text at the right frame.

Well, if you make a multiple TAS for 5 games, while making an additionnal hack sync for a very low(or none if you're good in TAS management) cost in frame. Then nobody is armed. If the judge reject the final submission because of the hack, just resubmit the very same movie and just say it sync 5 legit games. edit: Anyway, either way I admit that it's still far fetched.

Uh...how about at the very least TASing one of the games and submitting it to see what's the reception be like?
