Lester's story completed 1585 frames faster then old nitrogenesis's run.

About the Game

Another World, also known as Out of This World and Outer World, is a 1991 cinematic platformer action-adventure game designed by Éric Chahi for Delphine Software. This game is story of young scientist Lester Knight Chaykin, who in result of an failed experiment with particle accelerator was teleportation in a dangerous alien world where he is forced to fight for his survival.
If you think that you already know story about how he will survive, you are wrong. Happy viewing to everyone!

Game objectives

  • Emulator: snes9x-1.51-rerecording-v6-win32
  • Aims for fastest time
  • Abuses programming errors
  • Death abuse
  • Does sequences breaks
  • Manipulation with luck

Emulators speed difference

Comparison in frames with previous movie is not fully correct. Old movie was done on Snes9x 1.43 which is no longer accepted. For unknown reasons, game speed on newer 1.51 version approximately ~1.02 times slower than was in 1.43. Probably it is one of reasons why it is forbidden nowadays. Newer emulator is big disadvantage, about ~15 seconds was wasted just because more accurate emulation was used, fortunately numerous improvements are more than enough to compensate these 15 seconds emulator-based difference. So in reality improvement is more significant than these "1585 frames".

Tricks and Glitches

Shooting at sitting position is faster than at standing

Yep it is.

Shield-forward trick & Running with White Flash trick

Pistol mechanics include a little-known trick - after short period of accumulation of energy-ball Lester can start run forward with keeping this energy-ball. If ball have enough energy for shield, shield will be created ahead of Lester. If ball have enough energy for White Flash, White Flash will be done. Notable moment that even if to go to the next screen energy-ball will be still with Lester.

Impuls-jumping

Doing a tiny step(s) before every jump is faster than simple continuously jumping. NHG who discovered it explanation it like this and i agree with this explanation (quote): "I think the real reason is that he is in the middle of a running animation but the game has to restart the position of his legs to do the jump animation properly, and to do that he kind of teleports him just a little further."

Bombs glitch

In palace, guard who drop bombs at cellar. At bottom of stairway in very epicenter of explosions there is a safety point. The lower part of the Lester's body located in offscreen and explosions can't damage him.

Stage by stage

Underwater

When press "UP" and "A" buttons Lester swim up faster than with only "up" button. It is not improvement, just fun fact if someone not knew about it.

Beach

Minor movements optimisation.

Prison

First guard was killed by falling cage slightly faster, he not even shoot up, in old run he died after shooting.
Another improvement, when "our friend" finished opening door, go to back previous screen and come back to elevator screen simultaneously with him. In result "our friend" will teleported ahead of Lester and run instead of lazy walking.

New sequence break

Normally walkthrough assumes to deactivate energy system on the lowest floor and lock the door with guard, however with very thin timing is possible to pass this guard and survive even without locking doors!

Vents

Nothing special

Broken bridge section

Very short section before caverns, but have many tiny time-saving tricks. At first small glitch after recharging pistol Lester shoot thru closed door. And then used running forward with White Flash trick three times in row. In previous TAS all three White Flashes was done staying on the same place. Not forget that shooting at sitting position is faster than at standing.
At the end of section, while making pass into the rock, turning around allowed Lester to jump into hole faster.

Caverns

Some movements optimization + using Rrunning with White Flash trick three times. When awaken pterodactyl shoot while sit down as always.

Death abuse

After inundation, death abuse was used to reach water pool screen without getting pistol back, after resurrection at DDRX checkpoint Lester got new pistol.

Orb-guard

New faster pacifistic tactic, shield-forward trick was used to pass this screen with one stop instead of two.

Laser deadly pit

Long time ago, in childhood, in times without internet and other tutorials, another world was my first ever video game, i was stuck in may places, particularly in caverns i not knew what to do underwater and i just fall in this pit with deadly lasers again and again.. and again and after long sufferings i finally get success. Only later i understood that it was wrong solution.
Better luck manipulation inside pit, 0 squatting instead of 2. In 2011 i was not able to make own TAS and i am grateful to NitroGenesis that he demonstrated this underwater part skip for everyone even with these 2 sloppy squatting movements.
Also jumping-run at opening doors are slowdown Lester speed, here is faster to normal running before doors will be open.

Terrace/Palace

After throwing Lester to the other side, execute simple normal jump to left, instead of running to right before jump (I dunno why Nitro did this strange mistake). Running with White Flash trick was used to destroy wall at guard with bombs earlier. Also bomb glitch was used to survive in epicenter of explosions. Besides it better luck manipulation - in old movie guard did 1 laser shot during bombing. In new movie one 0 shots.

New sequence break

Discovered by NHG. Normally before jumping into pit to the basement Lester must to deactivate security system or diagonal laser's shot must kill him, however he can survive!

Tank

Extremely short section, but very small improvement was done even here - at left panel-block with 4-buttons block, just before last white button, right bottom button is not necessary to be pressed.

Baths

Not exactly but almost the same that was. Nothing new.

Possible improvements

  • Optimisation of movements can be made a bit better, impulse-jumping made optimisation of movements is a lot harder than in it can seems.
  • Game have a lot of lags, some lags reduction can be made.
  • May be exist not-forbidden emulator, where game speed as fast as in old Snes9x 1.43.

Special thanks

  • I want to say big thanks to my friend NHG aka NintendoHardGamer.
Most of tricks we designed together with him in 2011, it were months of research, many times we thought that all that can be found in this game we already found, but this game full of surprises and many times suddenly he or i found some yet new improvements, it were very fun times. I recommend to watch his awesome Single Segment run for PC version of game on SDA.
I hope he will finish his own TAS and will beat me in near future :)
  • And of course thanks to Eric Chahi for creating this fantastic masterpiece!

Suggested screenshot

37074 or similar frame with bomb explosion.

feos: Accepting as an improvement.

What kind of Super Nintendo fan am I? I had a cartridge of this game, too, but I never got past those leeches at the beginning... Now, even worse; despite my frustration with this game, I never watched a full run of it. I'm such a sore loser, I know. Since it's the first run I watch of this game, I can't say much about how this compares to the old run, but it surely is good. I laughed my ass out when the guy, who was supposed to help Lester, kicked him in the crotch. :)
I am old enough to know better, but not enough to do it.

More like, old incorrect emulation was ~15 seconds too fast.

It's a case of both. snes9x 1.43 lags too little, but snes9x 1.51 overcompensated it and added too much lag instead. That said, 1.51 is still more accurate to hardware than 1.43.
http://www.youtube.com/Noxxa <dwangoAC> This is a TAS (...). Not suitable for all audiences. May cause undesirable side-effects. May contain emulator abuse. Emulator may be abusive. This product contains glitches known to the state of California to cause egg defects. <Masterjun> I'm just a guy arranging bits in a sequence which could potentially amuse other people looking at these bits <adelikat> In Oregon Trail, I sacrificed my own family to save time. In Star trek, I killed helpless comrades in escape pods to save time. Here, I kill my allies to save time. I think I need help.

Pushing along the guy onto the lift was a good improvement for sure. Even though entertainment wise I prefer the previous run where he glitches the lift a bit and killed random stuff before going back up to wait. But if it does save time then can't argue against it. Questionable improvement wise would it be faster in the prison to use / glitch the lift to destroy the wall (around 3:08 on nitrogenesis' currently published run) and then going back up to push him onto the lift? May be a slight bit quicker since you wouldn't have to destroy the wall when you get down after or would it screw up the pushing him onto the lift trick since it mentions it needs to be precisely timed? Thinking since you are having to wait there it looks like it might be possible to fit in if it won't screw stuff up. Thanks for the quick temp encode.
Enjoys speedruns but hasn't actually tried making any yet.

Good question, obviously it was tested at planning :) If to destroy this wall earlier like you say, next time when Lester will back to this screen, guard below will be already "ready" to shoot, and in this case will be impossible to execute this sequence break. Btw normal encode in submission text.
I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes. Current projects: NES: Tetris "fastest 999999" (improvement, with r57shell) Genesis: Adventures of Batman & Robin (with Truncated); Pocahontas; Comix Zone (improvement); Mickey Mania (improvement); RoboCop versus The Terminator (improvement); Gargoyles (with feos)

I love how it looks like every enemy is the worst shots ever.
Somewhat damaged.

Ah I see, thanks for clearing that up as I didn't check on the project testing myself. Good to see they gave it a try.

Good work, nice findings. I hope you check out the sequel too: http://tasvideos.org/1305M.html It is a funny game and probably has undiscovered speed tricks.

Quite tubular. I'm glad you improved this because I don't much care for TASing anymore. I started an old run too, but it kinda went nowhere because my TAS SPARK ain't there no more. Who knows when it will come back? We will NEVER know. But when it does I will be looking at this game again ;) Voted yes.

Why was the Genesis version not played/used? It doesn't have load screens. Or are the loading screens not counted?

If the only difference is loading screens/lag/etc it doesn't matter.

Watched this, thought it was pretty good. Then I watched Game Grumps play it in real time and fail a few times. I feel like it has increased my appreciation of this TAS.

Is it possible to change screenshot? Old screenshot, where Lester sadly crawl with broken backbone look like too depressive. Even random frame will be better than it is now...

Check.
Warning: When making decisions, I try to collect as much data as possible before actually deciding. I try to abstract away and see the principles behind real world events and people's opinions. I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.

Oddly enough that guard you are supposed to squash can be killed realtime. My strategy was to run halfway in (about) and immediately shield twice. the first shield gets blown up by his mega zap, and he will then roll a grenade to bypass your second shield. after you create the second shield, retreat, then jump back over the grenade while still remaining behind the shield. make shields and retreat to get him to advance, then kill him with a mega blast+normal shot while hiding behind the shields. If you get zapped by his megablast stop and shield a little earlier. if you got it right you will create the second shield just as the first one gets blown up. very useful in a RTA speedrun because you can skip the guard guarding the drop ball completely. The guy's tactics aren't quite good enough to force you to kill him the intended way even playing real time, though they are pretty good. In fact i first beat him in a straight up fight before i realized the globe shooting bit. And yes, this tactic works in every single version.

Game speed is incorrect. Most likely he used Snes9x v1.43 which is not acceptable.
