I've just finished watching the WIP, a few things... 1) In the first secret star when collecting the red coins you seem to drift a little too close to the wall (I think it was the 6th coin). 2) I'm still sure that you can get inside the ship faster than that. I've been saying this for a while now. I'll have a go myself later on so I may rest in peace. 3) I think JSmith may have a point... also when you do the 'Blast to the stone pillar' star you skew yourself to the right when swimming...really entirely neccessary? Also, I liked the red coin star in JRB, it was much better than FODA's (especially the third one). In all I think that you are off to a good start. You seem to be making fast work of it too and i'll offer as much help as I can. Finally, and most importantly, please don't copy FODA, make this run your own and show us all something different. It just seems as if the door is open for a while after the eel leaves. There must surely be a point of distance that causes the eel's 'leaving' motion to initiate, at this point you would stop, turn, and swim back. It seems as though the eel has already left by the time you stop and turn, which suggests that you have gone past this point of initiation.

The point of initiation seems to be when the eel passes a certain distance offscreen or changes rendering modes. If the former is correct, the fancy camerawork could speed things up, but in the second case, Mario absolutely has to go a certain minimum distance away.

Would it be worth it on the eel star to do the "Blast to the Stone Pillar" route and then long jump from that platform to save some slow swimming? My gut feeling says yes, but I'm not good enough with the pillar glitch to try.
I have tried it but it is not faster. Maybe the right side. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/3304/SUPER%20MARIO%2064%20%28USA%29%20120%20stars.m64

If he ignored BoB, the run might look a little strange.

I've watched rikku's WIP and I must say there are many mistakes. The only thing that I didn't expect was you catching the red coin while the shell was still closed, so congrats on that. But you did some stylistic moves identical to mine which could have been made differently/faster. And this start of the movie is the most improveable... I must say that if 90% of the movie looks the same or with visible flaws, then I'll have to vote "no". You already have a great base material to start with so you don't need to study routes, etc. All you have to do is optimize, and still, you didn't do direct swimming, your swimming had timing mistakes, etc. I'm not trying to start a debate, please continue your run, I'm just trying to not give you any surprises on what I think of this improving run. And I don't decide whether a movie should be published or not, so it's not my call. Just try to notice more improveable areas, because you've skipped some.

I just watched the new WIP. What I'm seeing is that Mario sometimes adjusts his course when he's swimming long distances. He changes course a bit before getting red coin #7 in the secret aquarium, and again before collecting the star. He does it again on his way to the eel in Can the Eel Come Out and Play? The shortest distance between two points is a straight line. If Mario needs a course correction, it should be corrected back to the beginning. I thought getting Blast to the Stone Pillar coinless was a nice touch. The WIP is definitely faster and more enjoyable than the existing run. With regards to making it different from FODA's run, I know everyone wants to see something different, but FODA's run was incredible. There were a few places where FODA had the camera angle a certain way in the WIP, then changed it in the final version (such as getting hit by the penguin from the side instead of straight on, on the slide), which I thought made it less surprising or interesting than before, but otherwise, if this run looks like FODA's run, optimized, I would give it an Oscar.

Why don't you take more distance on "eel come ouy to play" star? take more distance and swim at the right moment so you have a little more speed when the star appears. When entering JRB i don't think that wall jump is a good idea. Is my red coin route really the fastest? try mr_robert_z's one.

Super Mario 64 was remade in Nintendo DS and became from 120 to 150. Actually, the DS version is the same as 64 editions almost but Luigi and Wario, Yoshi appear about not using cheating. It attempted to be stiff because it brought the image of YouTube. That has almost nothing to do with this topic.

Having watched JRB, despite the fact its significantly faster than FODA's mainly due to more accurate play I still think there is many errors. From what I remember about swimming the timing is hold for A for 18 frames pause one and then repeat endlessly, although at times its faster to hit A on every other frame if Mario is swimming a very short distance or is about to leave the water without the need to dive such as exiting the water on a sloped area. It would be great if there was a macro to do the swimming bit, as its anoyingly hard to do accurate swimming although its a little easier than B+K. As FODA mentioned the stylistic choices are too simalar and 120 star allows you to do different things as opposed to a 16 star. I think putting the camera in freecam may be of benifit because I'm sure time will more than be saved because of the lag that can be reduced, unless you specifically want to hex edit in previous stuff which is perfectly fine, providing its the fastest input available. On a later note I have a few hassle free days ahead of me and I hope to get the new 16 star run finished by the weekend, there is a few noticable bits that are faster but the majority of the time saved comes from frame shaving throughout the game. The hardest part is having a enough new stuff to justify watching over the previous versions. I personally think there is just about enough new stuff. Here is a mini trailer if anyones interested http://files.filefront.com/traileravi/;6415240;;/fileinfo.html

yeah, I thought the lobby glitch first was intended to save time, and yet here I see you go straight to BoB... It's hard to tell (the AVI quality was very poor I must say) but it seems that the way you grabbed that star is faster, because you take less "teleport hops". (only two hops I think, compared to 3-4 used in the current run. let the 16 star competion begin! FRAME WAR!!!

The star collected is the chain chomp star and the previous run was just a zip and a hop. Though the hop was somehow avoided, its hard for me to see how this could be faster...

Its only fractionally faster, because I'm able to initaite the turning earlier, through doing less BLJ's.

I assume the lobby glitch will still be used to get into BitDW and WF, right?

This is what I meant, just didn't know how to express it not knowing too fully the mechanics of it.
