Nah, I think that's stretching the number of TASes for this game, I think 16, 120, and CCCless is good enough. Plus, from a "non-conventional" standpoint, I think CCCless is the still the best option, and is far superior to 2092 coins.

Would you also be collecting stars along the way? Either that or you'd have to start from a save file to be able to enter all 15 levels. The moment you collect that 2092th coin could mark the end of the movie, or you could beat the 3rd Bowser. I don't know if it would be accepted at this site though. That said, yeah I'd probably be interested in seeing it. I always liked the coin collection stars in the 120-star run.

I was thinking of something like 15 stars (obviously 100 coin stars and red coin stars); just the bare minimum to get to the next levels. To end the movie, I was thinking of B3. I haven't read up on the rules to see if it's allowed, and Comicalflop makes a good point; I just wanted to see if there was any interest.

No, too arbitrary of a goal.

Just something I've been wondering about: If you get the star "Through the Jet Stream" first in Jolly Roger Bay, can you get the "Can the Eel Come Out to Play?" star next?

You mean 2091 coins. Unless I'm mistaken, one of the coins in Tiny-Huge Island is completely stuck underneath the ground and cannot be collected. I actually completed this challenge back in the day, and it was quite a task. Tiny-Huge Island gave me the most trouble because some of the tiny Goombas would commit suicide (or you'd accidentally bump into them), and Lethal Lava Land was also very annoying because often, the coins from the bullies would fall into the lava and not quite make it back onto a platform. I'd definitely like to see such a run. If not on this site, it'd be a great addition to YouTube and elsewhere.

So you go in a stage, you collect 100 coins, star appears, you collect it, you continue, then BAM! you get every coin in the entire level. what then? how do you progress to the next course? do you save and quit? does the number of coins you collected this way get saved? How would this run end? (I assume collect every coin in the entire game, then go beat bowser?) This run sounds both like it has its technical problems (like the ones I mentioned, plus the ones mwl mentioned) and that the run could be both a cool combination of 100 coin route style stars in the 120 run, yet also be anticlimactic and uncouth in its progression from course to course. It also brings up the question of does SM64 need 4 TASes?

I assume that last thing he would do in each level would be to collect the red coin star.

I seem to remember that it's possible to get infinite coins on bowser fights due to his flame breath. It's been several years but I remember screenshots of people with over a 1,000 coins in bowser fights alone

oh. that makes way more sense, so yes, that solves the "progression" situation, so that's one less hurdle. Interesting little concept... are there any videos/demonstrations of such a "collect all coins in the level"? ... holy crap, that must take a shitload of planning in making coin routes for every single level... anyone up to the task of making routes?

I'd be interesting in seeing some sort of 'collecting all coins that don't respawn', I think it has good potential for stunts and such, and it takes a good planning.

Now that the flow of the run makes sense to me, I am much more interested in seeing this. Why limit yourself to only the coins in the 15 levels rather than getting all coins, which, according to http://db.gamefaqs.com/console/n64/file/super_mario_64_coins.txt , totals 2672.

I'd vote yes on the route planning alone. And it beats the game... getting all the way to Bowser 3 might be a problem. In fact, it might be a huge problem. just 15 stars, how are you going to get places? you need 15 just to make MIPs appear... so you're going to have to grab extra stars along the way anyways. I don't think there's enough coins to make enough stars to get into Bowser 1, unless you BLJ you're way into there. but you're still stuck at getting enough stars pre-MIPs. And yeah, first thought to come was respawning coins, both at Bowser and for example Hazy Maze Cave (although those spiders stop giving coins but keep spawning, iirc.) oh, and coin.txt linkie no workie.

Because only your coin totals from the 15 main courses are recorded as high scores. (To check them, click on "Scores" from the file select screen.) Also, on some sub-courses, such as Tower of the Wing Cap, it's actually impossible to collect all of the coins in one go.

Those are respawning enemies, not coins. If you defeat them again, no coins are given. There is a finite coin total in each of the 15 main courses except Wet-Dry World and Tiny-Huge Island, and to max out the coin counter (to 255) on those two stages requires pulling off some rather difficult glitches.

Sounds like a good justification.

I'm assuming he'd be getting 2 stars per level, plus board bowser's sub because it's necessary to fight bowser 2, totaling 31 stars. He would be able to obtain more than 15 stars before needing to go upstairs. Edit: And the link works fine when I click it.

ooph, once again missing things. yeah, all coins + red coins = 2 stars per stage. So that makes the game beatable for sure. As for acceptable... it's mario 64, there's high demand. I guess the goal would seem fuzzy, but no less than CCCless. instead of collect every star, collect every coin, so a different kind of obscure 100%. But as with any game, an obscure separate run is best determined by the actual gameplay, so I'd be interested in seeing at least one level in action.

Im wondering if people would be more interested in seeing a 70 star glitchless run... Would be closer to how people remember playing the game, and plotting the rout would make for an interesting challange. Best of all, the goal would be really well defined, Kill bowser for the third time as fast as possable while not abusing any glitch. Would showcase many of the games levels without being quite as cumbersome as a 120 star run.

glitchless is relative. you need to specify which glitch you don't want.

It doesn't necessarily need to be the red coin star. Collecting any star -- even the 100-coin star followed by START+exit course -- saves the high score.

No offense, but I think this is the kind of idea that wouldn't go well with the community. First off, where do you draw the line? How do you define what is and isn't a glitch? Also, the purpose of a speedrunning website is not to provide visual walkthroughs, but to show games being completed in the fastest way possible.

How do you mean? no BLJ, no MIPS, no passing through walls that were not intended to be passed through (its fairly easy to tell which). If there are spacific questions, it shouldnt be too hard to follow the spirit of the thing, but those questions would be best left to the author.

Still... What's a glitch? Is BLJing at turbo speed a glitch? Is beating bosses instantly with metal caps a glitch?

The 70 star idea came up like 30 pages back (also by me, coincidentally, IIRC), and it wasn't realistic. The conditions would be too variable. Another reason why the coin thing would work because it would probably be the most unique of all the TASes so far. The coin routes would all be original, as opposed to the same usual star routes.
