I heartily agree. While seeing Mario whizzing backwards at superluminal speeds never loses its ability to amaze, for me these runs are more entertaining, partly because they are slow enough that I can actually follow what is going on, and most of the solutions to reach stars are highly creative, using objects/enemies etc in the game environment in ways that most people would never even think of. These remind me of world 4-3 from the B-less Super Mario Bros, which, for me, demonstrates everything that TASing is about: using lateral thinking and precision to do something apparently impossible. It seems unlikely that the whole game could be completed under these conditions (but never rule anything out) but I'd love to see a playaround submission.

A minimal button submission would be awesome.

I wonder if anyone would ever find a way to get to the bowser pipe without the "A button".

Can someone remind me again which buttons act differently between SM64 and SM64DS? I've only played the DS remake extensively, and there, [crouch button] + [attack button] (slide kick) + [attack button] (jump out of the slide kick) gets into the pipe no problem. Is the button combination different on the original? Also agreeing that a minimal A button TAS would be awesome to see. The biggest hyperspeed/door skip glitches (HWK and BLJ) all of course focus extensively on the use of the jump button, so something that is pretty much the complete antithesis of that would be very entertaining. It would also correspond nicely to the "minimal" (= zero) B button TAS of SMB1.

In the original, you can't jump out of a slide kick using B (attack button), you need to press A (jump button).

The thing about a minimal A button TAS is that it might well end up using BLJs to skip most of the game anyway. Sure, BLJs cost a lot of A presses, but the alternative is to play the game "normally", which requires getting 70 stars, a lot of which will require some A presses anyway. You might be better off investing A presses in BLJs in order to avoid having to do lots of levels which require you to press A several times. (Though the number of levels which require the A button is rapidly falling!) How much A pressing does the MIPS skip require? It'd be nice to see him in a non-obsolete TAS.

I see. How does diving (dash to full speed + attack button) work? Does it require the jump button? Or does it just not gain enough height? (I'm using "jump button" and "attack button" rather than A and B to avoid confusion, since the roles are switched between SM64 and SM64DS.)

It doesn't require the jump button, you can recover from a diving using attack button. But it doesn't give you enough height to reach the pipe :/

Disappointed he used the canon, but still genious. About the minimal press, I meant without the BLJ obviously and doing preferably all the stars.

A full minimal-A run would be my personal TAS of the century, but idk why we'd exclude BLJs or demand all stars. The presence of heavy-A-use glitches that skip lots of low-A-use levels makes routing interesting, and as the category evolves, we'll get to see big and exciting differences in routes. If you just want to watch each star done with minimal A presses, that's why this page exists. EDIT: Oh dear god it looks like all those videos are gone. Fuck YouTube and its unbelievably awful content policies. I am really really sad right now. If anyone knows whether those videos are preserved anywhere, I'd love to know about it.

Luckily that takes 0 presses so I would guess a minimal "A button" run would be a 16-star run. A lot of the early stars can also be obtained with 0 presses which is nice (lots of BoB, lots of WF, lots of CCM, etc..)

Oh, excellent! But if there are youtube videos of them that aren't getting taken down, why aren't they on the page? Is the maintainer just afk?

Looks fake; also something to note is that the 70 star door didn't display the message before he walked through it.

lmao “got it” how did he get those 3 messages in the beginning as if it were a new game, but then suddenly the game seemed to be into 120-stars mode?

If random people in my chat who know nothing of speedruns knew it was fake, the fact that the experts at TASvideos even considered it is an insult.

I await the day a "No A button" TAS of the game becomes possible.
