Nice! In the description, you mentioned this as TAS only. How exact does the jumping need to be for this to work? :o

Anyone attempting to get a good-ish time on this star now the skip has been discovered?

Funilla already did it non-TAS, but there's no run using the skip for now

I await the day a "No A button" TAS of the game becomes possible.
Or a non joystick run? :o) We should not forget that pressing "A" it's mandatory to pass the dilog scene... or the save dialog after a star is collected. We just need to be able to reach bowser's pipee in the first bowser stage, then we are good to go.... I guess. :P But it would be better to do exactly like the small world of super mario world: do the most star possible and finish the game. By the way, the two last no joystick are amazing!

You can use the B button instead

Sorry if my post was kinda misleading, I didn't mean that funila did it before the TAS, I was trying to say that someone could do it non-TAS already (after it's discovery) but no one did an actual run using it.

The Science of Cloning by pannenkoek2012. Cloning is deterministic and you can plan what you clone when by following some simple rules. Link to video In the comments a TAS/RTA application is suggested - cloning the 8 red coins star (so you don't have to walk over to where it is, you can just release it and get it)

As with many of the great game exploits, amazing and, at the same time, utterly confusing. Even after a half-hour explanation I couldn't understand what was going on...

@Patashu: I highly doubt that’d have any actual chance of being faster awesome video though, as always from pannenko

Maybe for a non-BLJ run, but yeah, if BLJs are allowed I doubt it can save any time, unless there's a big distance between the last coin and the star, and there's no BLJ linking the 2 places

To make it save time, we'd probably need to change the route, but I still think that it would save some time at least in one level :P

Yeah, that's for sure. I'd be really happy to see this getting a use on a TAS.

I think you could use it in a ton of places if you clone a star and bring it to another one for a bunch of double star collections.
I like my "thank you"s in monetary form.

Even with cloning I'm pretty sure you can't pick up two stars on the same frame.

Is this trick similar to the one used in Snowman's Land 100 coins to clone the coin-spawning enemies (can't remember their name) in the current 120-star TAS?

Link to video "To do this glitch, you must go close to a moneybag right as it transforms back into a coin." It has nothing to do with fake clones.

Is it possible to at least use this to bring an otherwise faraway star to a closer location? Edit: and still save time.

I'm putting my foot down at star dupes. Why? Well... Legend of Zelda - Ocarina of Time: Golden Skulltula duplication is banned for 100%. Croc - Legend of the Gobbos: Gobbo duping is not allowed/banned. There is probably more dupes in other games that is banned. Then you bring up Ape Escape... where duping is allowed for speedruns. Then it becomes a complicated mess.

Uh...case by case I suppose. For example, duping was done on the "Catch em All" pokemon Blue run. :P Edit: Besides, this trick doesn't even seem to allow you to get multiple stars at once, since the level ends after you get a star. :P

Wait a minute... this trick doesn't duplicate the star, it just brings the star to another place. If you do this trick, the star won't be at his original place anymore, there will be only one star.

I'm going off jlun's quote above mine.

Exactly, so I think there won't be any problems regarding the legitness of this trick for a TAS to be published here.
