Wow, nice trick. Yu should bring that to the Secrets topic on the GameFAQs board, we seriously need some new material. To my knowledge, that's never been discovered before.

Steering isn't exactly a problem. It's impossible. It goes right in a straight line, but gains speed rapidly. Pressing B will instantly put mario sliding on his bums. Quite usefull.

I always thought it odd that Mario has an attack that uses his posterior... then again, Wario got the shaft when one of his moves in the upcoming Super Smash Bros. Brawl is super flatulatance

Well it will have to be saved for the 16-star run... Hopefully there will be an oppurtunity to show it off somewhere.

Maybe next TAS around, another case of cool trick discovered far too late in the run. At least it's not as abusable as supersliding.

Like I've said sometimes before this, the first run (of any game) is usually a backbone run for an even better run to come.

It will be used, on TTM slide. It's just that it could have been used in other places. It saves a little time.

So true- I will start work on improving my DCK2 1-2% run a few months after I submit my current run. Yeah, discovering tricks late is always a drag, but honestly the run is so good as it is right now that this discovery won't hinder it too negatively. Good luck in continuing this, and finding other great stuff to apply this new trick. Any chance of an AVI of WIP? I was just able to get the emulator and ROM to see the .n64 progress, but it takes sooooo long to get to the new stuff

you can load the savestate provided on the WIP before the last.

Its weird how it always goes straight.... I wonder if there is ever a place where you would like to cut across a steep slope.

Hey, what happens if you do this glitch while sliding backwards after a BLJ? Do you speed up indefinitely? When I discovered it I thought it was useless (except maybe on the first part of this slide) because you stop so quickly. If this saves time on the Princess's Secret Slide too... EDIT: It doesn't. Doing it during BLJ just locks in Mario's path and freezes his running animation. It may still be useful during BLJ for climbing really steep slopes.

I appear to be blind, could someone link me to the WIP with the latest savestate?
What's a man like me supposed to do with all this extra savoir-faire?

i didn't provide a savestate for the last WIP, but you can use the savestate from the level before that. humm... there seems to be no recent savestate available... i'll put one on rapidshare in a few minutes. edit: here it is it starts at star 81 (tiny huge island)

In accordance with standard procedure, I am doing the suicidal thing of putting up an AVI. Mirrors welcome. Download accelerators banned. Edit: This download is intended to supplement the *0->*64 video on page 62 of this thread, and the *64->tinyhuge test found on page 72 of this thread. Edit #2: Mirror! (and like 10 times faster)

Could someone tell me how to upload the savestate without it stopping the movie? Every time I've tried it, it's always kicked my arse thrice over. (Yes, in one go.)

to load the savestate you must choose "read-only" while playing the movie, or else you're re-recording over the movie. you must download the movie file again.

Here is a mirror. I'll probably keep it up until the next WIP is released, or if some of the overlapping levels the WIP are different. https://webfiles.berkeley.edu/DK64_MASTER/shared/foda.avi Many thanks to DeHackEd, and FODA!

Quick question about the 16-star route: isn't it faster to take the bunny's star and skip Dire Dire Docks?

you need to take the star in DDD to make the water move forward so you can enter the bowser level.

You don't actually need 16 stars for any specific event in the game. 15 stars is significant because it makes the bunny appear, but collecting that star as #16 just wastes time. Rather, DDD's star has nothing to do with the fact that it's #16 and everything to do with the fact that until you get the Board Bowser's Sub star specifically, you can't get into Bowser 2's world. The entrance to DDD starts out in front of the pipe for Bowser 2, but when you board the sub and get the star, the entrance moves back making it possible to get to Bowser.

It is always entertaining, how people post something so simple with the confidence that nobody else thought of it before or without even thinking twice why should everybody be so stupid to do something less obvious... ;)

That does get me thinking though. Maybe there is a way to use the bunny so that you can skip DDD, that would save about 2 mins.

I think people have tried to get through DDD before, but with no luck. I was testing some things around the first Bowser door to see if i could get through that wall. The closest I came was on the left side of the door where the railing hits the wall next to a very slightly angled wall. I got caught in a seemingly infinite loop of smashing between the wall and the railing after a dive. I eventually stopped, after slowly sliding into the wall. When I stopped, it gave me the animation you get when you try to grab onto a wall that you can't pull yourself onto, but then I fell to the ground instantaneously and fell out of the wall. If somebody can get through there, it wouldn't accomplish much. If a trick is used to get through that door that also works on the similar door downstairs, however, a 1 star run could be accomplished. This to me seems like the most likely way to cut stars. Even still, getting through the first Bowser door would be cool and would allow more flexibility in choosing routes. Yay, the .avi just finished downloading. Time to watch. Edit: Ok, I watched the last WIP, and it was very good. Loved THI. Glad to see the going through the wall trick on "make wiggler squirm" worked out. I'm sure that will make a few people wonder what the hell just happened. One thing i noticed in your comments and from watching the video that I feel I should say, though, just so you don't make a very easy to correct mistake. You seem to think you need to tap a while spinning to stay up longer. You just hold a the whole time in order to drop slower.

By the time that MIPS is there, stars are no longer needed. The only reason that DDD is played is to get access to Bowser2, not for it's star.
