Yeah, the red coins whilst clock is moving would be awesome...

Especially if it does not slow you down, however when you are higher up among those spinning platforms there is very little space for you to land on (a miniscule size when the platform is perfectly vertical, I don't even think you can land on those) and would thus limit where you go to not fall all the way down, unless you start getting tricky with wall jumps off the vertical platforms.

Well there is the possibility that the spinny platforms could launch him into higher jumps... though Im not sure if the physics engine is that advanced.

I doubt it... his jumps are pretty fast going off the ground, which would net in no benefit from the platform spinning and pushing him up. so only if he slid from the top to the bottom would there be any benefit. I also consider entering the tower to be luck manipulation, so use the frame that you enter determine the best possible outcome, instead of going in the tower at the first possible frame and making due with the fastest method allotted for a stopped, slowed, sped up, or mixed up tower.

Well, the route I've thought of for the new 16 star run is 1. Bowser red coins [1 star] 1.1. Re-enter and exit boss area 2. Wompa's Fortress; 3. Get the usual 5 stars [6 stars] 4. Enter basement and go to SSL 5. Get usual 2 stars [8 stars] 6. Head for LLL 7. Get three stars [11 stars] 8. Head for HMC and talk to Toad [12 stars] 9. Get three stars in HMC [15 stars] 10. Continue as normal
I think leaving BOB out altogether is a bad idea. Chain Chomp and The Island In the Sky are probably faster than some stars in LLL or HMC. Also, don't you need 12 stars to get the star from the Toad in the HMC entrance room? Because of the setup time for this glitch, I really don't see how this will save any time. Just seems like moving the order of stars around. The time to enter BoB is basically negligible due to the short stars, in comparison to glitching into Bowser 1.

Just so you know, taking the "shoot to the island in the sky" star in BoB takes about as much time as doing it normally when the cannon is already open (which isn't opened on a 16 star run). I've put a video on google videos, let me bring it up again, here: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7439433297822007687 hummm now i had an idea, a rough AVI of a 16 star run could be put together by avi editing just so we could get a route timing. it could mix the 120 star run, spezz's movie and that google videos movie.

You know, I've seen that vid about 1,000 times, but this is the first time I noticed you got a little stuck at the warp... Anyway, the cutting up of runs is a good idea, but which stars did you have in mind?

I think he got "stuck" because he needed to burn off speed to make the turn up the spiral.

Just out of interest does anyone think that what is shown here is done on a turbo controller. The guy said it was done on the PAL version, the video is short and it goes frame by frame its located here PAL is 50 fps

50 fps vs. 25 fps = twice as many buttons that can be pressed per second. But I don't see how that'd help, since Mario has no need except for BLJ to use that many button presses in so few seconds...

No, NTSC (I have no idea if that's the right abbreviation) plays on 20-25 FPS. The 60 you are thinking of is the VI/s.

No... Videogames works at aprox. 60 fps on NTSC because it needs to send interlaced signals to the tv, and it works at 50 fps on PAL, because the signal is also interlaced there. Simply put, but i think Dehacked of Bisqwit know better. It certainly isn't 20 or 25. The nintendo 64 works at uneven fps.

That's not true. The PAL/NTSC difference is 50hz/60hz or vertical interrupts which is just the right display settings for tv. Unmodified PAL games will run at 5/6 the speed of NTSC games so a game at 30 fps NTSC will be 25 in PAL. That means 20% more input frames for PAL games per second (in an unmodified game). edit: Never looked into it but it could mean just more time to make input, not sure if it's actually more frames but that would be kinda unresponsive if it was the same rate as NTSC.

Close. 60 being a larger number than 50, it's NTSC that has 20% more inputs per second.

Yeah i confused myself, in an unmodified PAL game there is more time to make a correct input, not more frames. It's not too terribly much but could make a difference with rapid fire situations/precise movement.

So, 1 second in pal is longer than 1 second in ntsc, like 1 kg of iron is heavier than 1 kg of cotton? This conversation has gone out of the subject again. Let's stop it.

No, the game is slower so there is more opportunity for the right input. Fixed redundant sentence above. To FODA: That isn't the case.. it is for almost all games now that they run at the same speed but Mario 64 PAL does run slower than NTSC. Not 17% slower but IT IS slower. Conversions weren't so good back then. Looks like it may actually be close to 17% slower though.. wow. http://speeddemosarchive.com/Mario64.html

I don't know what is the case for PAL games, but there are 2 possibilities, and neither are important for discussing mario 64 TAS: 1 - The PAL game is like an unmodified NTSC game, just playing back at a slower rate. This would mean it'd be easier to speedrun it, because it's a NTSC game in slow motion. 2 - The PAL game plays at the same speed as a NTSC game, but with less frames. In this case, it is just worse for all purposes (except some rare cases like Rygar). That's it. Now let's drop it please. The thread is too full of out of topic discussion.

Yes, enough of this off topic stuff. It's ruining the whole topic! Keep your comments on the run in progress.

Just experimenting with 16 star strats, tell me if you think this is an optimized and good way to start a 16 star. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/2445/SUPER%20MARIO%2064%20%28USA%29.m64

Yea, that looked very nice, if it's indeed faster to do that than to do 2 stars in BoB.

Woah, that's awesome... Seems perfectly optomized to me. I liked how you took a small stop in the BRoD when after you BLJ'd, whether it was intentional or not. Excellent job! Looked a lot faster than getting a star in BoB...
