the default frame advance button in mupen is "\" (around the backspace button on american keyboards, I think it's in the lower left on european keyboards. Don't quote me on that). All you need to do is hold the button combination you want while it is on one frame, hit the \ button, and it will register those buttons on that new frame. I highly recommend using the TAS controller plugin for greater analog stick precision than any gamepad can provide. Sometimes it's one degree that makes all the difference (see: retardedly-difficult-to-tas-yet-mysteriously-easy-to-do-in-real-time colliwobble jump in BK). Good luck!

The \ button is too far for my fingers, I always configure it right next to the other buttons. When having ZXCV as B, X, Y, and A (respectively) for SNES I had D as pause and F as frame advance, so that either my forefinger or middle finger was right next to the frame advance button. I highly suggest configuring the FA button very close to the others.
Ok, I must have been living under a rock or something to not follow up with this WIP... but anyway, at least I am starting now. Anyway, looked at it and I have to say the hyperspeed abuse is looking awesome at this point in time... and the way you access the stars is qiute different and more spectacular as compared to spezzafer's run. Love it, looking forward to the next WIP :P all the way AKA.
PS: Which FODA WIP were you talking about, I can't seem to find any WIP that he posted... I searched like 20 pages back.
EDIT: Found v141 of his WIP, will look into it now.
EDIT: Just finished watching FODA's run, amazing! The mobility of Mario in this game sure makes it spectacular to watch :)
AKA: am I watching the wrong version of FODA's WIP? From what I saw, he uses the cannon to boost him to the Island in the Sky, but you use hyperspeed... his appears to be done faster
I actually played with a game pad but I hardly ever touched the control stick: I usually set the tas plugin to how I wanted it. I set frame advance to numeric keypad 0 but I suppose it doesn't matter where it is mapped to. Still, a pity I can't map it to an unused gamepad button.
FODA has to open the cannon so that he can get the five secrets star, and collect 100 coins during Footrace With Koopa the Quick. AKA probably isn't going to get the five secrets star, so it would take longer to talk to the Bob-omb and wait for the cannon to open than it would save.
TASing or playing back a DOS game? Make sure your files match the archive at RGB Classic Games.
The first star is 26 frames quicker overall if you minus the "whao you got a star maybe you could use that to enter Whomp's Fortress and kick his ass". The chain chomp star is 10 frames quicker overall. I stop timing as soon as Mario starts his victory dance, with execption to the bowser star because I stopped when I entered the pipe.
mr_robert_z: Go to settings, hot keys and set frame advance to Space Bar and Pause (which returns the action to normal pace) to a key which is far away from any gameplay key or space bar.
EDIT:
Finally nailed it I think this is two seconds faster than the google version of it I'll go and compare just now although it'll be hard to go by on frames.

EDIT: Yup, visually mine is definitley a lot faster.
Woah, thanks a lot for the tips! Seems that the Frame Advance makes it look more like a TAS than my last two vids.... And it's really slow... Now I can see why FODA wasn't spending every second of his life working on the 120-star TAS.
BTW, I was experimenting with BLJing in BoB. I warped right into the big thing with the cannon. I wonder if it would be possible to warp in there even if you didn't talk to the bobomb...
To AKA: Niiice, that looked great.
Just wondering when does the owl appear in WF, because if it doesn't require you to beat Whomp then I can go to CCM and then just get the 3 stars excluding whomp and top of the fortress star, because Whomp takes ages to beat.
Oh, I'm very sorry... I forgot the word "but". Lemme fix it: Yeah, skipping the King Whomp wuld be a good idea, but the owl appears in the Shoot into the Wild Blue star.
Better?
Both the owl and the pink bobomb come with the Shoot to the Wild Blue star.
I think I read somewhere that you can get the owl star using neither the owl nor the cannon. It involved a triple jump + wall kick thinig if I recall correctly, and it shouldn't be slower than the owl
I never get the Caged star using the owl or the cannon. I always just long jump from the top of the fortress. It's fast and simple. It's also very easy to long jump off the top of the King Whomp.

AKA, I think you mean "Fall onto the caged island" star.
"Shoot in to the wild blue" is a star you can get with a simple wall jump or with FODA's method.
So here is what you can do:
Get the "Shoot into the wild blue" star and reenter Whomp's Fortress. Select the "Shoot in to the wild blue" star, climb into the tree and the owl will appear.

I just tried it with a new game and you're right. Sorry!
I'm looking forward to see this star without cannon/owl/fortress!
Edit: Can't play your movie because you only uploaded the .m64 file, but not the .st file. Or am I too stupid?
I'm sorry it doesn't work becuase you've recorded from a savestate which I don't have, so I would reccomend you either capture this with CAMSTUDIO or FRAPS, or continue recording from my movie file.
