I love the idea of having commentaries, it makes it more interesting for the person watching if they don't know the game that is being ran or to explain certain glitches or whatever in the run. I'd do commentaries if i had a clue as to what was going on in most runs, lol. Maybe I should start interviewing some TAS-ers... I've been told I have a good radio voice by some people (whether it's true or not I don't know).

Here's a promotional pic for the commentary :P http://s141.photobucket.com/albums/r69/NapstrPSX/?action=view&current=IloveEarthbound.jpg A little creepy, I know. (wish I knew the html to make the link into a word like all the cool people do, I'm such a loser. I'm so excited about recording! Oh, the joy!

@ NapstrPSX: I emailed you back, answering all the questions you asked me, using my gmail account. I kinda liked to be "interviewed" that way :)

Edit: Heh. I've been having my own plans for commentaries before this thread came about — including one for Earthbound — but I doubt it would have fully sparked without NapstrPSX's thread. Thanks; here's hoping that your commentary is a hit with everyone. (I'm still making my own commentary, but I'm uncertain as to if I'll be posting the link here. Only time will tell, I suppose.)

Only question is which game I start out with first. Earthbound is going to be one of them, regardless of whether or not someone else provides commentary for it — in this case, that would be NapstrPSX. So even though I may end up saying "Screw you all >8U" and doing otherwise, do you all think I should start off with an Earthbound commentary, or some other game I have on my list?
I really don't think that one TAS should have more than one commentary.

Oh crap! I was going to do an earthbound commentary too!

The little bits and pieces of humor liberally sprinkled throughout the game were what made this game golden when played normally, so I agree it would be great to mention stuff that TASing skips, like the fact that there's a sign in onett that says something like "don't step on the flowers" but in order to actually read the sign with A, you have to be standing on the flower patch, or that enemies never die, they just become tame or vanish, or melt, or something. Once this is completed, I'll watch the run again with commentary :)

Hey, just wanted to let everyone know that I am beginning recording now! I am very excited and have read up a lot on some info of the TAS and am ready to present it all. I have a special treat that I would like to do for the 3-minute wait at the falls, but I don't know if I can make it work or not, I'm trying to prepare for that right now before I begin to see if I can make it work. If it doesn't and I figure out a way to do it later, I may end up cutting/splicing some of the track and putting it in because I think it's a good idea, but it's a suprise! Alright, here we go. EDIT: I tried my 'treat' out and it worked alright so I'm gonna go with it. I think everyone will really enjoy it and it is perfect for that 3-minute break. What will it be? :O

Ok, that was quite a recording! I'm really happy with the way it turned out, I didn't have any unwanted silence or really bad stumbles or anything and thing it worked out nicely. I am converting this right now, and I have to leave town for a while so I won't be able to put this up until either really late tonight or tomorrow morning, but it will definitely be up. It will be either 32 or 24 Kbps mono so hopefully it will download pretty fast (thanks for the advice JXQ, and I think it helped my voice sound a little bit better, I don't like how it sounds at 128 at all) I am really excited to hear from anyone who listens to it! Post here or if you want to mail me at NapstrPSX@gmail.com you are more than welcome! Expect to see me around TASvideos a lot more, I don't know why I didn't get involved sooner. Who knows, maybe I'll contribute a TAS someday. :P

Ok, it is uploading now, it will be done in like 20 minutes or so. I will edit this post when it is complete. I went with the 24 kbps mono version, I think it sounds the best and the filesize isn't that big (35.7 MB). I really really hope everyone enjoys it, I think you'll find that it is much better than the practice commentary I did. It starts off maybe a tad slow as I was getting my bearings and I was a bit tired by the end but I kept it pretty good I think. Please feel free to let me know whether you liked it or not or if you have any improvements if I ever did this again (not planning on it unless the opportunity comes up, as in, I'm not really going to be actively seeking anything) My approach was to just be me and not try to be too over-the-top or force in comedy. It's not particularly spectacular but I think you'll find that I really do love Earthbound and I did enjoy doing the commentary a lot, it was a nice way to spend the afternoon.

Sorry Vidar, it was uploading fine and then my comp had some problems and I had to leave again for the night. I am uploading it to a different site now as the other one I was using just all of a sudden isn't working for me. I'm using sendspace. I'll edit THIS post when it's done. EDIT: It's done uploading! (btw, I like sendspace a lot. I thought you had to register to upload, but you don't so that's why I skipped by it earlier when I was looking for a place to host .mp3 files) http://www.sendspace.com/file/nvmzmh Link should work fine for everyone and download relatively fast. I just hope that whoever takes the time to listen to it enjoys it. I'd also like to hear from anyone who has anything to say about it. Enjoy!

Downloading now ... it seems to download at about 50 KB/sec (not bad at all) I'll listen to it as soon as it's done downloading. Can't wait!!

Heh, I just listened to some of it and while I know I could still do better, I had a really tiring week and didn't come off as energetic as I would've liked but that's ok. Also, I'm probably my own harshest critic, I have a hard time listening to my own voice. I worked about 50 hours last week and didn't get a full night's sleep before recording so... that may explain it! But, I'll just wait to see what everyone else thinks. I haven't ever really used a mic much so I was afraid to talk too loud or say things that would sound bad in the mic but talking quiet isn't any better. OK, I'm going back to bed and I'll check back later to see if anyone listened! Whew, I'm tired. -_-

Just finished listening to it all. Great job! I liked it. I laughed at a few places, I even learned a few things myself (mostly about the signs and what some characters say, because I never read that). I think your goal of "keeping other people company while they watch the video" was achieved. At least, that's how I felt while listening to it. Listening to this made me think of something ... Maybe it would be cool if authors of TASes did a commentary on their own TAS. It probably would be good for teams (like Nitrodon and I), but I think it would be a good thing to do. Unfortunately, I never even met the guy. We live too far from eachother to even consider doing an audio commentary on our run(s), but still... It's a good idea that I'll try to make happen someday. Overall, audio commentaries are a good thing, and I'd like to see/hear more of those for other TASes too. So far, there are only 2 audio commentaries (that I'm aware of, at least). One is OoT and now there's EB. Thanks for taking the time to record this audio commentary on our run, NapstrPSX. We really appreciate it and feel honored that someone would want to pay tribute to our work like that.

I just finished listening to the commentary, and I enjoyed all of it. I apologize for not contacting you before you recorded the commentary, but I tend to be shy, and the game wouldn't let me use the "Overcoming Shyness" book on myself when I played it.

Unfortunately not every game has potential for good commentaries, and not every author has potential for making good commentaries. I made a commentary for Rockman 1, explaining various glitches and playing choices along the way, but in my opinion it turned out to be extremely boring, to the degree that I don't really want to link to it. (I recorded it in Finnish and subtitled in English, but the language is not the cause of boringness.)

Hey, I just wanted to say that I am really glad you guys liked it. I mean, you all are the ones that I care the most about whether or not you think it's worth listening to. Bisqwit, I know what you mean about what you think of your own commentary. I am still afraid that people would find mine boring, but hey, if people like it then that's great. I'm sure I wouldn't mind and would enjoy seeing your commentary for Rockman 1 no matter how boring you thought the info came off. :P I would like to hear from anyone who took the time to listen to this, don't be shy! (I liked Nitrodon's comment about the Book of Shyness!)

It was pretty good. Not the most skilled orator I've ever heard, but you do a good job of filling nearly four hours with interesting (if unrelated) stuff. No huge gaps where you forget that there's a commentary. Good recording quality. Usually when it gets below 64kb/s, the volume is a lot lower than the rest of the stuff in my playlist, which is annoying. I think the mathematics of sound compression would make anything lower than 24kb/s a bad size/quality tradeoff. Some things I liked include the info on Poo's equipment and the random signposts and NPC comments. I had actually forgotten that it's possible to talk to non-quest related NPCs. Lots of cool info about the stuff that was skipped and could be improved. I think the bit with Ness' dad was a bit of social satire on absentee fathers in western countries. I may be reading too much into it, but the girl in the Stoic Club talking about her superego and all that- I think that's an attack on western philosophy. I've met a lot of eastern-inclined thinkers, Buddhists and Hinduists and the like, and they really seem to hate anything that came out of ancient Greece, like Stoicism. That would mesh fairly well with Itoi's apparent love of the Beatles and probably the 60s in general. Love and peace. It was a bit surprising not to have heard something about how walking straight against a slanted wall is faster than walking diagonally. That's just something I observed- not sure if it's true or not. Similarly, it would have been good to point out that Ness walks diagonally to get into doors and tunnels faster than going straight. (Again, my own inference.) Can't really comment on the music or even the more overt Beatles references therein, but it's an interesting bit of trivia that the Dalaam theme, like most "Asian-sounding" music, uses the pentatonic scale- the black keys on a piano. Interesting to me, at least. In the credits, they list "Shigesato OK? Itoi" as a voice sample, which refers to a voice sample saying "OK?". I forget where. The name input screen, maybe? It's probably included in the Mother 2 RSN, if not the game itself. The "I miss you" sample at the end came up in a remix someone did of the hotel theme. Well... a bit late to say this stuff now. Maybe it's enough of an excuse to do a version 2.0 if Hal and Nitro do another TAS? ;) Hope to see more commentaries for different games. It is good company...

it seems like there's quite alot of interest in doing an EB commentary, so can't we all just chip in? you know, one word at a time, then seamlessly edited together to one big ol' mp3. \o/
