Danan: The Jungle Fighter is a platformer game for Sega Master System. The protagonist is a Conan the Barbarian clone who has experience points and "animal powers". None of the animal powers are used in the run, because they are slow and weak. There is minor damage boosting and careful experience point management, but precise boss fights are what make this different from a real-time run. Nothing overly exciting for any TAS veteran, but it is a solid old-school TAS.

LEVEL-UP PLANNING

Killing enemies and collecting stars gives EXP. Each level-up gives +1 to damage, so EXP needs to be planned for the boss fights. Thankfully it takes little time to get some extra EXP when required. Killing enemies also reduces lag, so all is good.
LevelRequired EXPCurrent Damage Output

LV2303
LV3704
LV41305
Optional +4 knifeN/A5 + 4 = 9
LV518010
LV625011
LV732012
Unavoidable +15 knifeN/A12 + 15 = 27
Funnily, you need 60 EXP to get from LV3 to LV4, but you only need 50 EXP to get from LV4 to LV5.

N/AknifeThis knife gives +4 damage and is not far off track. Easily worth it for the upcoming bosses.
25BOSS 2: The Axe ManPretty much every boss repeats a specific pattern or maybe two different moves. Precise controls make the boss fights look very easy.
0amoebaWhat a strange thing. Looks like a mole. Awards no EXP.
1fishWe are at a short water level. I didn't like recording this. Has quirky swimming mechanics. Can be improved.

30BOSS 4: Obsessive Compulsive SkeletorThis boss has an irritating pattern. Takes a lot of time. Maybe there is a way to make it behave better? Getting one more level-up before this boss might save frames, but I have not studied that possibility. It would require careful planning and many quick kills throughout the game. Worth testing and timing, if anyone wants to try to improve the run.
0BOSS 5: Praying IdiotThis uneducated person thinks prayer has some effect.
N/AknifeA strangely placed unavoidable power-up. Just before the final boss. It gives +15 DMG.
0BOSS 6: Final BossBest piece of graphics in the whole crappy game. Easy boss fight. Very easy game overall. Fun to TAS, though.
Kills: 59
Items: 2
Stars: 6

POSSIBLE IMPROVEMENTS

To get something done I decided to take a relaxed attitude, so there's probably minor improvements here and there. You can try reducing lag, if you really want to. Someone like Alyosha could improve this by 2 seconds in no time. The EXP plan is quite good, but maybe not perfect? Oh, maybe I should have killed one barbarian at the knife room in level 2 and omit killing one nazi near the end?

SCREENSHOTS

RAM WATCH

A casual TAS. It was fun to do.

ars4326: Judging!
ars4326: Hi, Aqfaq. This was a solid (albeit laggy!) platforming run. Experience management was pretty tight, with convenient kills routed along the way in addition to obtaining the star items. Boss fights were good, too, although the last few toward the end became repetitive (perhaps better AI cycles could be found, in the future?). All in all, a nice effort put forth for an old-school SMS title.

Wow... I wanted to like this game, but it just felt crappier as it went on. The music is pretty bad. The graphics are fairly bland, though the hero is hilariously manly. The lag is horrid, though the frequent killing does help with it. You look like you had a good EXP route. The bosses are done well, where it seems like you abuse hitboxes pretty well. (At first, I thought the second boss desynced since it didn't look like you actually hit him.) However, the bosses become fairly repetitive and boring as a result. I was trying to figure out, though, if the girl became the final boss at the end; I guess not. I'd say this is a good run of a fairly middling game. I'm giving it a high Meh vote.
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. well done, yes vote
I want all good TAS inside TASvideos, it's my motto. TAS i'm interested: Megaman series, specially the RPGs! Where is the mmbn1 all chips TAS we deserve? Where is the Command Mission TAS? i'm slowly moving away from TASing fighting games for speed, maybe it's time to start finding some entertainment value in TASing.

I'm voting Meh too, it's well made, but the game doesn't help it having crappy music, and lag =P

Just got around to watching this. I didn't find it very entertaining, though it was no fault of yours, and there really was quite a bit of lag. Good job finishing this despite not having a lot of motivation though!

Thanks, I actually did have motivation for doing this. It was fun. What happens is that I occasionally browse some ROMs with whatever happens to be the latest version of BizHawk. Sometimes a game appears that fits my TAS mood and abilities. Then I transform into a smiling TAS robot. This was a funny little project that was started and finished in a day or two. Oh, but yeah, you are right that I didn't have the motivation to really push the game to its limits. The problem is that the effort required for additional improvements escalates exponentially and TASing quickly becomes an overwhelming burden. Even if I had spent twice the time with this run I might have saved only a few frames. That is indeed something I have no motivation for. And yeah, the game is bad. It has a nice B-movie flavor. It feels like a combination of The Beastmaster and Surf Nazis Must Die. I like that.

We opened the publishing page before the new movie was published, and both got 2920 as autogenerated screenshot name. I changed mine to be 2921, so now we need sheela to reupload the proper one for 2920 again. sheela901: you'll have to use a different name for the proper screenshot now, since 2920M.png is already in the database. Someting like 2920M-fixed.
Warning: When making decisions, I try to collect as much data as possible before actually deciding. I try to abstract away and see the principles behind real world events and people's opinions. I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.

Final boss looks like brother of final boss in Ninja Gaiden (1st or 2nd).

No, my location refers to the speculative "Omega Point Theory" by Frank J. Tipler. I did watch True Detective, though. The second season was a disappointment. The first season was great.

Aqfaq, any helpful tips for RTA on these bosses? It feels like there's some manipulation but it's super inconsistent and hampering attempts right now. Wondering if there's a specific way to do them or if the good behaviour is essentially partly RNG.
