I'm writing this topic because I'm seeing a lot going on in recent days, where multiple argumentative debates turn sour or unproductive needlessly because of some people in the arguments who seem to have no interest in any sort of a friendly debate, and instead opt to attack the poster, fling around insults, or all-around do things that cause argument topics to crash down to a point where nobody will be any wiser of it. I do not intend to single out any single person who has been posting in argumentative topics recently, but if you find you recognize your behavior in this topic, chances are you may want to listen to some of the advice that may be given in this topic. So let's come up with a few guidelines for debating, so that we may strive for a healthier debating environment in the TASVideos forums.
  1. Debate the message, not the poster. If you disagree with someone's post, or aim to disprove someone's message, that is certainly fine - that is exactly what debate is for! But it doesn't mean it's necessary to attack the poster for writing a message or having a certain belief. Do have some respect for the opposing party's viewpoint, even if you consider it wrong or misguided, and do not use it as a reason to insult the user. In other words, pit topics against each other, not people.
  2. Do not wind yourself up about what other people post. I've seen multiple discussions derail recently because some people invest too much emotion in the topic, and this can get in the way of rational behavior or rational discussion. If you find yourself winding up too much because of an argument you are involved in, leave the debate, take a break, or at least try to keep your head cool before you post again.
  3. Corollarily, and even more importantly, do not write debate posts with the intent to wind other people up. In less civil terms, this is known as baiting, trolling or shitposting, and it is absolutely inappropriate conduct. Purposefully dragging down discussion topics can be grounds for a ban. Do not sink yourself to this level.
  4. Refrain from insulting altogether. Related to points 1 and 3 but I feel it bears special mention. There is not a single reason in any discussion topic to have any need to insult any user you disagree with. Insults do nothing but bring down the quality of the debate, and only serve to instigate further back-and-forth insults and reinforce mutual dislike. If you have to use insults, you are not winning any argument, not even if your viewpoint technically is correct.
I'm certain there's a lot more that can be said about this, but I believe this should be a reasonable start. I hope we can from now on cut down on the number of troublesome debates filled with personal remarks and issues, and create a friendlier debating environment overall.

Thank you, Mothrayas. I'll bookmark your post. An example of civilized debate here: #154 Debate - Matt Dillahunty vs Ray Comfort - Is There A God - 2014 This video is a good lesson on debate etiquette, even if the topic doesn't interest you at all. The debaters hold absolutely contradicting views (Christian Theist vs. Secular Atheist), but they manage to discuss in the most civilized and friendly manner.
